A new face at the top for Powerslide at the Groß-Gerau Kriterium

The 44th Gross-Gerau Kriterium and the 22nd Sprint Cup both took place last weekend in Germany and a new face finished on top of the senior men’s category.

Skaters of all ages from 28 different countries gathered in Gross-Gerau last weekend for the legendary Gross-Gerau Criterium. The senior skaters all raced a 500m, an elimination race and a points race to collect points for the general classification. Simultaneously, a Sprint Cup was also held for the short distance specialists. This portion of the competition included a 300m TT and a 500m.

Powerslide leads its rookie to victory

While we have been used to seeing Bart Swings and Felix Rijhnen stand out in this competition for Powerslide in the past, the 2022 edition instead saw Colombian Jacobo Mantilla claim top honors for the team. After experiencing an Olympic season on the ice, both veterans supported the team's new acquisition to victory this year. Mantilla finished 3rd in the 500m, 2nd in the 5000m points and 7th in the 10,000m elimination to secure the overall win. The young Colombian is already known for his four Junior World champion title and his three Panamericain champion titles. It will be interesting to see what he accomplishes as the season progresses. 

Switzerland's Livio Wenger of Arena Geisingen finished second while Belgium's Jason Suttels, also representing Powerslide, completed the overall podium. Other notable performances in the men's race included the victory of Frenchman Doucelin Pedicone in the points race and Italian Daniele di Stefano’s win in the elimination race. The two event winners did not show enough consistency to reach the top of the general classification.

Vargas and Rueda fought hard for the women's title

The women's criterium featured a heated battle between Ecuador's Gabriela Vargas and Colombia's Gabriela Rueda. At the end of the three distances, it was Vargas, representing NL Custom, who rose to the top of the overall standings with a victory in the 5000m points race, a second place in the 5000m elimination race and an 11th place in the 500m. Young Gabriela Rueda, representing Powerslide, took second place, including a strong win in the 5000m elimination. American Corinne Stoddard, also known for her success in short track, took third place overall wearing Arena Geisingen's colors.  

Verdugo and Pedronno, best sprinters of the weekend

Chilean Ricardo Verdugo and French Mathilde Pedronno won the overall classifications for the senior men and ladies. Verdugo won the 500m and finished 4th in the 300m while Pedronno won the 300m and finished 3rd in the 500m. Verdugo was accompanied by Elton de Souza and Jhoan Guzman on the men's cumulative podium while Maria Luisa Gonzalez and Leonie Imhof joined Pedronno on the women's cumulative podium. 

The next European Cup will be held at the Arena Geisingen next weekend.

Un nouveau visage au sommet pour Powerslide à Groß-Gerau

Le 44e Critérium de Gross-Gerau et la 22e Sprint Cup ont eu lieu le weekend dernier en Allemagne et un nouveau visage s’est emparé de la victoire chez les hommes.

Des patineurs de toutes les catégories d’âge provenant de 28 pays différents étaient réunis à Gross-Gerau le weekend dernier pour le légendaire Critérium de Gross-Gerau. Les patineurs seniors s'élançaient tous sur 500m, dans une course à élimination et dans une course à points pour accumuler des points au classement général. En simultané, une Sprint Cup était aussi tenue pour les spécialistes des courtes distances. Cette portion de la compétition comportait un 300m contre-la-montre et un 500m.

Powerslide mène sa recrue vers la victoire

Alors que nous avons été habitués à voir Bart Swings et Felix Rijhnen se démarquer lors de cette compétition pour Powerslide dans le passé, l’édition 2022 a plutôt vu le Colombien Jacobo Mantilla réclamer les grands honneurs pour l’équipe. Après avoir vécu une saison olympique sur la glace, les deux vétérans ont appuyé la nouvelle acquisition de l’équipe vers la victoire cette année. Mantilla a terminé 3e au 500 m, 2e au 5000 m à points et 7e au 10 000 m à élimination pour s’assurer la victoire au cumulatif. Le jeune Colombien est déjà connu pour ses quatre titres de champion du monde junior et ses trois titres de champion panaméricain et il sera intéressant de voir ce qu’il accomplira au fil de la saison. 

Le Suisse Livio Wenger de l’équipe Arena Geisingen a terminé au deuxième rang alors que le Belge Jason Suttels, lui aussi de Powerslide, a complété le podium cumulatif. Parmi les autres performances à notifier chez les hommes, il y a la victoire du Français Doucelin Pedicone à la course à points et celle de l’Italien Daniele di Stefano à la course à élimination. Les deux vainqueurs d’épreuve n'ont par contre pas fait preuve d’assez de constance pour se hisser au sommet du classement général.

Chaude lutte entre Vargas et Rueda chez les femmes

Le critérium chez les femmes a mis en vedette une chaude lutte entre l’Équatorienne Gabriela Vargas et la Colombienne Gabriela Rueda. Au terme des trois distances, c'est finalement Vargas, qui représente NL Custom, qui s’est hissée au sommet du classement général avec une victoire au 5000 m à points, une deuxième position au 5000 m à élimination et une 11e place au 500 m. La jeune Gabriela Rueda, qui représente Powerslide, a pris le deuxième rang, notamment grâce à sa belle victoire au 5000m à élimination. L’Américaine Corinne Stoddard, aussi connue pour ses succès en patinage courte piste, a pris le troisième rang au cumulatif en portant les couleurs d’Arena Geisingen.  

Verdugo et Pedronno, meilleurs sprinteurs du weekend

Pour ce qui est de la Sprint Cup, nous avons eu droit à des victoires du Chilien Ricardo Verdugo et de la Française Mathilde Pedronno. Verdugo a remporté le 500m et terminé 4e sur 300m alors que Pedronno a remporté le 300m et terminé 3e sur 500m. Verdugo était accompagné d’Elton de Souza et Jhoan Guzman sur le podium cumulatif masculin alors que ce sont Maria Luisa Gonzalez et Leonie Imhof qui ont rejoint Pedronno sur le podium cumulatif féminin. 

La prochaine Coupe d’Europe se déroulera à l’Arena Geisingen le weekend prochain.

Lefeuvre and Peula champions of the Trophée des 3 pistes

Spain's Patxi Peula and France's Marine Lefeuvre are the 2022 champions of the Trophée des 3 pistes held last weekend in France.

The mythical Trophée des 3 pistes brought together skaters of all ages again this year for a three-day competition. While the majority of competitors came from France, other nations such as Spain, Italy, Colombia and Denmark were also represented.  

Peula dominates the men's competition

Patxi Peula was dominant in the Senior Men's competition. The 33-year-old veteran who is representing Rollerblade this year won five of the six distances on the program to eclipse his competitors in the overall standings. The only distance he did not win was the 500m held in Gujan Mestras on the second day. It was his Spanish compatriot Daniel Milagros who stood out in this particular distance. 

In the overall standings, Frenchman Timothy Loubineaud, representing Powerslide, took second place with four 3rd place finishes, one 2nd place and one 4th place over the weekend. Frenchman Doucelin Pedicone, representing Rollerblade, took third place overall ahead of Nolan Beddiaf and Hugo Morin both from France who took 4th and 5th place. 

Tight battle for the women's trophy

France's Marine Lefeuvre and Colombia's Aura Quintana were in a tight battle this weekend. The two regulars of the competition fought hard, but in the end it was Lefeuvre who prevailed. The Frenchwoman representing EO Skates won three of the six distances, finished 3rd twice and 6th once. 

Quintana had to settle for second place overall. The Colombian showed great consistency throughout the competition, but was unable to win an individual distance. Italy's Veronica Luciani of Rollerblade took third place, while France's Alison Bernardi and Manon Fraboulet rounded out the top five.

Peula et Lefeuvre champions du Trophée des 3 pistes 2022

L’Espagnol Patxi Peula et la Française Marine Lefeuvre sont les champions 2022 du Trophée des 3 pistes tenu le weekend dernier en France.

Le mythique Trophée des 3 pistes réunissait encore cette année des patineurs de tous âges lors d’une compétition étalée sur trois jours. Alors que la majorité des compétiteurs provenaient de la France, d’autres nations comme l’Espagne, l’Italie, la Colombie et le Danemark étaient aussi représentées.  

Peula domine la compétition masculine

L’Espagnol Patxi Peula a été dominant chez les Seniors Hommes. Le vétéran de 33 ans qui représente Rollerblade cette année a remporté cinq des six distances au programme pour éclipser ses compétiteurs au classement général. La seule distance qu’il n’a pas remportée est le 500m tenu à Gujan Mestras lors de la deuxième journée. C’est son compatriote espagnol Daniel Milagros qui s’est démarqué de cette distance. 

Au classement général, le Français Timothy Loubineaud, qui représente Powerslide, a pris le deuxième rang avec quatre 3e position, une 2e position et une 4e position au cours de la fin de semaine. Le français Doucelin Pedicone, qui porte les couleurs de Rollerblade, a pris le troisième rang cumulatif devant les Français Nolan Beddiaf et Hugo Morin qui ont pris respectivement le 4e et le 5e rang. 

Chaude lutte pour le trophée chez les femmes

La Française Marine Lefeuvre et la Colombienne Aura Quintana étaient de tous les combats ce week-end. Les deux habituées de la compétition se sont livré une chaude lutte, mais c’est finalement Lefeuvre qui l’a emporté. La Française représentant EO Skates a remporté trois des six distances en plus de terminer 3e à deux reprises et 6e une fois. 

Quintana a quant à elle dû se contenter de la deuxième place au cumulatif. La Colombienne a fait preuve d’une belle constance au fil de la compétition, mais n’est pas parvenue à remporter de distance individuelle. L’Italienne Veronica Luciani de Rollerblade a pris le troisième rang alors que les Françaises Alison Bernardi et Manon Fraboulet ont complété le top 5.

Championnats du monde 2022 : un week-end légendaire en patinage de vitesse courte piste

Alors que le weekend de compétition était marqué par les derniers tours de piste du légendaire Charles Hamelin, Choi Min-jeong ajoutait à sa propre légende en mettant la main sur son 4e titre de championne du monde au cumulatif ce weekend à l’aréna Maurice-Richard.

Choi Min-jeong toujours aussi dominante

Après avoir été repoussés de quelques semaines, les Championnats du monde ISU en patinage de vitesse courte piste ont finalement eu lieu ce weekend à Montréal. Après une victoire sur 1500m et une première place en finale B sur 500m samedi, la Coréenne Choi Min-jeong a remporté le 1000m et la super finale 3000m dimanche pour mettre la main sur son 4e titre de championne du monde au cumulatif. Avec ce 4e titre, l’athlète de 23 ans est maintenant seule en 3e place du plus grand nombre de titre en carrière chez les femmes derrière la Chinoise Yang Yang (A), nommée championne six années consécutives de 1997 à 2002 et la Canadienne Sylvie Daigle qui a remporté cinq titres entre 1979 et 1990. La Canadienne Kim Boutin termine au 2e rang de la compétition cette fin de semaine devant la jeune Néerlandaise Xandra Velzeboer.

Au relais féminin, alors que la course semblait sur le point de se terminer avec une presque égalité en tête entre les Canadiennes et les Néerlandaises, Choi Min-jeong est venue surprendre tout le monde par l'extérieur pour coiffer Kim Boutin à la ligne d’arrivée et permettre à la Corée de l’emporter. Le Canada remporte l’argent et les Pays-Bas le bronze. 

Shaoang défend son titre avec brio

Du côté des hommes, c’est Liu Shaoang qui repart avec les grands honneurs cette année, lui qui avait également remporté le titre l’an dernier aux Pays-Bas. Le Hongrois a remporté toutes les finales individuelles de ces championnats 2022. Pascal Dion du Canada et Lee June-seo terminent respectivement 2e et 3e du classement cumulatif.

Le rideau tombe sur la carrière de Charles Hamelin

La foule locale attendait avec impatience le relais 5000m chez les hommes, une dernière chance de voir le Canadien Charles Hamelin sur la glace. Hamelin avait annoncé sa retraite en 2018, mais s'était ravisé se sentant encore capable de compléter un autre cycle olympique. Ces quatre années supplémentaires lui auront permis de remporter une 6e médaille olympique en carrière. Dès son entrée sur la glace en finale du relais dimanche, la foule a scandé son nom. Dans cette épreuve clôturant le weekend de compétition, Hamelin a aidé le Canada à remporter la médaille de bronze, terminant derrière les Coréens et les Néerlandais.

World championships 2022: A legendary weekend in short track speed skating

While the weekend of competition was marked by the last laps of Charles Hamelin's legendary career, Choi Min-jeong added to her own legend by winning her 4th overall world championship title this weekend at Maurice-Richard arena.

Choi Min-jeong still dominant

After being postponed for a few weeks, the ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Championships finally took place last weekend in Montreal. After a victory in the 1500m and a first place in the B final in the 500m on Saturday, Korean Choi Min-jeong won the 1000m and the 3000m super final on Sunday to claim her 4th overall World Championship title. With this fourth title, the 23-year-old athlete is now alone in third place for the most career titles among women behind China's Yang Yang (A), who was named champion six years in a row from 1997 to 2002, and Canada's Sylvie Daigle who won five titles between 1979 and 1990. Canada's Kim Boutin finished 2nd this weekend ahead of young Dutch star Xandra Velzeboer.

In the women's team relay, the race looked like it was going to end with the Canadians and the Dutch almost tied for the win, until Choi Min-jeong came from the outside to surprise everyone and finish ahead of Kim Boutin to give Korea the win. Canada won silver and the Netherlands bronze. 

Shaoang defends his title in style

On the men's side, Liu Shaoang, who also won the title last year in the Netherlands, took home the top honors this year. The Hungarian won all the individual finals of these 2022 championships. Pascal Dion of Canada and Lee June-seo finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the overall ranking.

Curtain falls on Charles Hamelin's career

The home crowd was eagerly awaiting the men's 5000m relay as it would be the last chance to see Canada's Charles Hamelin on the ice. Hamelin had announced his retirement in 2018, but changed his mind as he felt he had what it took to complete another Olympic cycle. These four extra years ended up allowing him to win a 6th career Olympic medal. From the moment he stepped on the ice in the relay final, the crowd chanted his name. In the event that closed the weekend of competition, Hamelin helped Canada win the bronze medal, finishing behind the Koreans and the Dutch. 

I would like to take this opportunity to wish Charles Hamelin the best of luck in his future endeavors and to thank him on behalf of the entire team at Passion/Patin/Vitesse for all these years of emotional and exciting highlights.
