Championnats du monde 2022 : un week-end légendaire en patinage de vitesse courte piste

Alors que le weekend de compétition était marqué par les derniers tours de piste du légendaire Charles Hamelin, Choi Min-jeong ajoutait à sa propre légende en mettant la main sur son 4e titre de championne du monde au cumulatif ce weekend à l’aréna Maurice-Richard.

Choi Min-jeong toujours aussi dominante

Après avoir été repoussés de quelques semaines, les Championnats du monde ISU en patinage de vitesse courte piste ont finalement eu lieu ce weekend à Montréal. Après une victoire sur 1500m et une première place en finale B sur 500m samedi, la Coréenne Choi Min-jeong a remporté le 1000m et la super finale 3000m dimanche pour mettre la main sur son 4e titre de championne du monde au cumulatif. Avec ce 4e titre, l’athlète de 23 ans est maintenant seule en 3e place du plus grand nombre de titre en carrière chez les femmes derrière la Chinoise Yang Yang (A), nommée championne six années consécutives de 1997 à 2002 et la Canadienne Sylvie Daigle qui a remporté cinq titres entre 1979 et 1990. La Canadienne Kim Boutin termine au 2e rang de la compétition cette fin de semaine devant la jeune Néerlandaise Xandra Velzeboer.

Au relais féminin, alors que la course semblait sur le point de se terminer avec une presque égalité en tête entre les Canadiennes et les Néerlandaises, Choi Min-jeong est venue surprendre tout le monde par l'extérieur pour coiffer Kim Boutin à la ligne d’arrivée et permettre à la Corée de l’emporter. Le Canada remporte l’argent et les Pays-Bas le bronze. 

Shaoang défend son titre avec brio

Du côté des hommes, c’est Liu Shaoang qui repart avec les grands honneurs cette année, lui qui avait également remporté le titre l’an dernier aux Pays-Bas. Le Hongrois a remporté toutes les finales individuelles de ces championnats 2022. Pascal Dion du Canada et Lee June-seo terminent respectivement 2e et 3e du classement cumulatif.

Le rideau tombe sur la carrière de Charles Hamelin

La foule locale attendait avec impatience le relais 5000m chez les hommes, une dernière chance de voir le Canadien Charles Hamelin sur la glace. Hamelin avait annoncé sa retraite en 2018, mais s'était ravisé se sentant encore capable de compléter un autre cycle olympique. Ces quatre années supplémentaires lui auront permis de remporter une 6e médaille olympique en carrière. Dès son entrée sur la glace en finale du relais dimanche, la foule a scandé son nom. Dans cette épreuve clôturant le weekend de compétition, Hamelin a aidé le Canada à remporter la médaille de bronze, terminant derrière les Coréens et les Néerlandais.

World championships 2022: A legendary weekend in short track speed skating

While the weekend of competition was marked by the last laps of Charles Hamelin's legendary career, Choi Min-jeong added to her own legend by winning her 4th overall world championship title this weekend at Maurice-Richard arena.

Choi Min-jeong still dominant

After being postponed for a few weeks, the ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Championships finally took place last weekend in Montreal. After a victory in the 1500m and a first place in the B final in the 500m on Saturday, Korean Choi Min-jeong won the 1000m and the 3000m super final on Sunday to claim her 4th overall World Championship title. With this fourth title, the 23-year-old athlete is now alone in third place for the most career titles among women behind China's Yang Yang (A), who was named champion six years in a row from 1997 to 2002, and Canada's Sylvie Daigle who won five titles between 1979 and 1990. Canada's Kim Boutin finished 2nd this weekend ahead of young Dutch star Xandra Velzeboer.

In the women's team relay, the race looked like it was going to end with the Canadians and the Dutch almost tied for the win, until Choi Min-jeong came from the outside to surprise everyone and finish ahead of Kim Boutin to give Korea the win. Canada won silver and the Netherlands bronze. 

Shaoang defends his title in style

On the men's side, Liu Shaoang, who also won the title last year in the Netherlands, took home the top honors this year. The Hungarian won all the individual finals of these 2022 championships. Pascal Dion of Canada and Lee June-seo finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the overall ranking.

Curtain falls on Charles Hamelin's career

The home crowd was eagerly awaiting the men's 5000m relay as it would be the last chance to see Canada's Charles Hamelin on the ice. Hamelin had announced his retirement in 2018, but changed his mind as he felt he had what it took to complete another Olympic cycle. These four extra years ended up allowing him to win a 6th career Olympic medal. From the moment he stepped on the ice in the relay final, the crowd chanted his name. In the event that closed the weekend of competition, Hamelin helped Canada win the bronze medal, finishing behind the Koreans and the Dutch. 

I would like to take this opportunity to wish Charles Hamelin the best of luck in his future endeavors and to thank him on behalf of the entire team at Passion/Patin/Vitesse for all these years of emotional and exciting highlights.

A masterful performance by Canada in the 5000m relay

Short track enthusiasts were treated to perhaps the best day of competition at the 2022 Olympics as the final races were held today in Beijing.

A thrilling final in the 5000m

All eyes were on the 5000m relay event today as all the elements were in place for a historic final. Despite the absence of the Hungarians, the defending champions of the 2018 Games, the race was almost sure to offer quite a show with five great teams taking place on the starting grid: China, South Korea, Italy, Canada and the athletes representing the Russian Olympic Committee. One thing was for sure, China had a lot of pressure on their shoulders, as they were skating at home. Moreover, the presence of the Koreans in the final added an additional pressure on China knowing the rivalry between these two countries. For Canada, this race was going to mark the end of the Olympic career of Charles Hamelin, the flagship of Canadian speed skating for over 15 years.  Korea could also count on a veteran, Kwak Yoon Gy, who managed to regain his place on the national team after an absence of a few years. After a strategic race led by the Koreans for a good part of the event, the first major incident occurred with eleven laps to go when a loss of balance before an exchange pushed China off the podium. If China made a serious mistake, the Canadian team had a perfect race. With twenty laps to go, the Canadian machine started and no one could stop it. From Pierre-Gilles' pass to move up from third to second, to the following exchange allowing Dubois to take the lead, to the increase of the pace by the veteran Hamelin and the incredible burst of speed by Pascal Dion in his last two presences on the track, all this culminated in a victory for Canada. A masterful performance. Korea won the silver medal while Italy took the bronze. The win made Charles Hamelin the most decorated short track skater in Canadian Olympic history with six medals and Steven Dubois completed his Beijing 2022 collection with a gold medal after winning silver and bronze earlier in the competition. 

The cream rises to the top in the women's 1500m

After some relatively quiet quarter-final races, three skaters clearly showed their true colors in the semi-finals. Choi Min Jeong with an Olympic record on the distance, Suzanne Schulting with confident passes in traffic and Arianna Fontana with a powerful outside pass. It was clear that Fontana, now 31 years old, wanted a chance to add to her legend by competing in the grand final. Lee Yubin, Xandra Velzeboer, Hanne Desmet and Han Yutong had the tough task of trying to beat these three favourites. Han made her move really early by going full speed after only two laps, but changed her mind when she saw Suzanne Schulting wouldn't let her get away. With four laps to go, the action started to heat up as Arianna Fontana moved from 5th to 2nd with an outside pass, putting pressure on Choi Min Jeong and the pace picked up. A pace that only Choi, Fontana and Schulting could sustain. At the finish line, Choi entered in first place winning her 3rd Olympic medal in Beijing and 5th in her career. Arianna Fontana once again sets a new mark for the number of medals won at the Olympics with her 11th career medal, her 3rd in Beijing. Meanwhile in 3rd place, Suzanne Schulting wins her 4th medal of the Games, her 6th visit to a podium in two Olympic participations. 

Now that the Beijing Olympics are behind them, the athletes will travel to Montreal for the World Championships which will be held from March 18 to 20. As for the best junior skaters in the world, the Junior World Championships will be held in Gdansk, Poland from March 4 to 6.

Performance magistrale du Canada au relais 5000m

Les amateurs de courte piste ont probablement eu droit à la meilleure journée de compétition de ces Jeux de Pékin alors que se tenaient les dernières courses au programme.

Une finale des plus excitante sur 5000m

Les yeux étaient tournés vers l’épreuve du relais 5000m aujourd’hui alors que tous les éléments étaient en place pour avoir une finale historique. Malgré l’absence des Hongrois, champions en titre des Jeux de 2018, la course promettait tout un spectacle alors que cinq grandes équipes y prenaient part soit la Chine, la Corée du Sud, l’Italie, le Canada et les athlètes représentant le Comité olympique russe. Une chose était sûre, la Chine avait une pression énorme sur les épaules, elle qui patinait à la maison. De plus, il est facile d'imaginer que la présence des Sud-coréens en finale ajoutait une pression supplémentaire à la Chine quand on connaît la rivalité entre ces deux pays. Du côté du Canada, cette course allait marquer la fin de la carrière olympique de Charles Hamelin, figure de proue du patinage de vitesse canadien depuis plus de 15 ans.  La Corée pouvait elle aussi compter sur un vétéran, Kwak Yoon Gy ayant réussi à reprendre sa place sur l’équipe nationale après une absence de quelques années. Après une course stratégique menée sans embûche par les Coréens pendant une bonne partie de l’épreuve, le premier incident majeur s’est produit avec onze tours à faire alors qu’une perte d’équilibre avant un échange aura écarté la Chine du podium. Si la Chine a commis une grave erreur, l’équipe Canadienne s’est offerte un sans faute. C’est avec vingt tours à faire que la machine canadienne s’est mise en marche et plus personne n’allait pouvoir l’arrêter. Le dépassement de Pierre-Gilles pour remonter de la 3e à la 2e place. L’échange suivant permettant à Dubois de prendre la tête. L’augmentation du rythme de la course par le vétéran Hamelin et l’incroyable prise de vitesse de Pascal Dion lors de ses deux dernières présences sur le tracé. Tous ces éléments parfaitement exécutés allaient culminer avec la victoire du Canada. Une performance magistrale. La Corée remporte la médaille d’argent alors que l’Italie repart avec le bronze. Cette victoire permet à Charles Hamelin de devenir le patineur en courte piste le plus médaillé de l’histoire canadienne aux Olympiques avec six médailles et à Steven Dubois de compléter sa collection de Pékin 2022 avec une médaille d’or après avoir remporté l’argent et le bronze plus tôt dans la compétition. 

La crème remonte à la surface au 1500m

Après des quarts de finale sans grande surprise, trois patineuses ont clairement annoncé leurs couleurs lors des vagues de demi-finale. Choi Min Jeong avec un record olympique sur la distance, Suzanne Schulting avec des dépassements assumés dans la circulation et Arianna Fontana avec un dépassement extérieur tout en puissance. Fontana avait le couteau entre les dents en demi-finale et voulait clairement avoir la chance d’ajouter à sa légende en participant à la grande finale. Lee Yubin, Xandra Velzeboer, Hanne Desmet et Han Yutong avaient la lourde tâche de tenter de battre ces trois têtes de série. Han a tenté sa chance dès le début en partant à fond de train après seulement deux tours, mais s’est ravisée en voyant Suzanne Schulting ne pas la laisser décamper. C’est avec quatre tours à faire que cette finale s’est enflammée alors que Arianna Fontana est passée de la 5e place à la 2e avec un dépassement extérieur, mettant ainsi de la pression sur Choi Min Jeong. Le rythme s’est accéléré. Un rythme que seuls Choi, Fontana et Schulting pouvaient soutenir. À la ligne d’arrivée, Choi entre en première position remportant une 3e médaille olympique à Pékin et une 5e en carrière. Elle est suivie par Arianna Fontana qui remonte encore une fois la marque à battre pour le nombre de médailles remportées aux Olympiques avec une 11e en carrière, une 3e à Pékin. Pendant ce temps en 3e place, Suzanne Schulting remporte sa 4e médaille des Jeux, sa 6e visite sur un podium en deux participations olympiques. 

Maintenant que les Jeux olympiques de Pékin sont derrière eux, les athlètes ont rendez-vous à Montréal pour les Championnats du monde qui se tiendront du 18 au 20 mars prochain. Du côté des athlètes juniors, les Championnats du monde juniors se tiendront du 4 au 6 mars prochain à Gdansk en Pologne.

Longue piste: Erin Jackson est championne olympique au 500m féminin

Le 500m féminin était au programme aujourd'hui à Beijing. Parmi les patineuses à surveiller sur la distance, nous retrouvions notamment l'Américaine Erin Jackson, la Japonaise Nao Kodaira et les athlètes du Comité olympique russe Angelina Golikova et Olga Fatkulina.

Partant sur la 4e paire, la Japonaise Miho Takagi est venue mettre de la pression sur les autres patineuses dès le début de la compétition avec un temps de 37.12 secondes. Alignée à côté de Takagi sur cette paire hâtive, Vanessa Herzog allait quant à elle parcourir le 500m en 37.28. Les deux femmes patinaient tôt dans la compétition parce qu'elle n'avaient participé qu'à un seul 500m cette saison en Coupe du monde.

Il aura fallu attendre l'entrée en scène de l'Américaine Erin Jackson dans l'avant dernière paire pour voir le temps de Takagi glisser au 2e rang. Jackson qui avait malencontreusement raté sa qualification olympique sur 500m, s'était vu offrir l'opportunité d'y prendre part alors que sa compatriote Brittany Bowe lui avait offert sa place. Les yeux de tous les américains étaient donc tournés vers Jackson aujourd'hui. Avec un temps de 37.04 secondes, Jackson est passée devant Miho Takagi mais elle devait tout de même attendre le résultat de la dernière vague pour savoir de quelle couleur serait sa médaille. Finalement, l'une des favorites aujourd'hui l'athlète représentant le comité olympique russe Olga Faktulina n'a pu faire mieux que le 10e temps, venant confirmer la médaille d'or de l'Américaine. Takagi termine 2e alors que Angleina Golikova termine au 3e rang avec un temps de 37.21 secondes. La Japonaise Nao Kodaira a eu une course difficile aujourd'hui et n'a pu faire mieux qu'une 17e place.

Long track: Erin Jackson is the ladies' 500m Olympic champion

The women's 500m was on the program today in Beijing. Among the skaters to watch on the distance, were the American Erin Jackson, the Japanese Nao Kodaira and the athletes of the Russian Olympic Committee Angelina Golikova and Olga Fatkulina.

Starting on the 4th pair, Miho Takagi from Japan put pressure on the other skaters right at the beginning of the competition with a time of 37.12 seconds. Lining up alongside her on this early pair was Vanessa Herzog, who skated the 500m in 37.28. Both women were skating early in the competition because they had only competed in one 500m race this season on the World Cup.

It wasn't until American Erin Jackson came on the track in the penultimate pair that Miho Takagi's time slipped to 2nd place. Jackson, who had missed her Olympic qualification in the 500m, was offered the opportunity to compete in the event by her compatriot Brittany Bowe who gave up her spot for her teammate. At home in the US, all eyes were on Jackson today. With a time of 37.04 seconds, Jackson passed Takagi, but she still had to wait for the result of the last pair to know what color her medal would be. Finally, one of the favorites today, the athlete representing the Russian Olympic Committee Olga Faktulina, could not do better than the 10th time, thus confirming Erin Jackson's gold medal. Takagi finished 2nd while Angelina Golikova finished in 3rd place with a time of 37.21 seconds. As for for Japan's Nao Kodaira, she had a difficult race and finished 17th.

Dubois ajoute à sa collection olympique sur 500m

Du côté féminin, c’est en équipe qu’on pouvait monter sur le podium aujourd’hui. Pendant ce temps chez les hommes, ont allait couronner les sprinteurs par excellence de ces Jeux de Pékin alors que se tenait la grande finale sur 500m.

Les quatre grandes puissances du patinage de vitesse courte piste avaient rendez-vous en grande finale du relais 3000m chez les dames. Les Pays-Bas, la Chine, la Corée du Sud et le Canada s’alignaient sur la ligne de départ dans ce qui s’annonçait comme une finale enlevante. Le spectacle a été au rendez-vous et les patineuses néerlandaises ont démontré leur grande puissance en s’offrant un nouveau record du monde pour remporter les grands honneurs. Du côté du Canada, après une bonne partie de la course à patiner en queue de peloton, Courtney Sarault y est allée d’un dépassement tout en puissance avec huit tours à faire pour redonner espoirs au Canada. Malheureusement, deux des derniers échanges du relais ont été laborieux et le Canada termine finalement 4e de cette finale. Ce sont les patineuses coréennes qui ont passé la ligne d’arrivée en deuxième position derrière les Néerlandaises alors que les représentantes du pays hôte, la Chine, ont offert une médaille de bronze à leurs fans.

Du côté du 500m chez les hommes, les trois patineurs ayant terminé en tête de classement sur la distance durant la saison de Coupe du monde l’automne dernier n’ont pu se frayer un chemin jusqu’à la finale aujourd’hui. Lui Shaolin Sandor er Ren Ziwei ont vu leurs parcours s’arrêter en quart de finale alors que le champion olympique en titre Wu Dajing a dû se contenter d’une victoire en finale B. La grande finale s’avérait tout de même prometteuse alors que le Hongrois Liu Shaoang, médaillé de bronze sur 1000m et le Canadien Steven Dubois, médaillé d’argent sur 1500m, prenaient place sur la ligne de départ aux côtés de l’athlète du comité olympique Russe Konstantin Ivliev,du Kazakh Abzal Azhgaliyev et de l’Italien Pietro Sighel. Les occasions pour dépasser sur 500m en finale sont peu nombreuses et les patineurs ont rarement plus d’une chance de poser un geste qui les fera remporter la victoire ou améliorer leur rang. Dubois qui partait 4e sur la ligne a fait le choix de poser cette action unique dans le premier soixante mètres de la course. C’est avec un dépassement par l’intérieur sur le Kazakh après le premier virage que le Canadien est passé de la 4e à la 3e position pendant que devant, Liu et Ivliev étaient déjà détachés du groupe. Dubois termine 3e pour remporter sa 2e médaille des jeux. Pendant ce temps, Lui Shaoang ajoute également à sa collection en remportant l’or alors que Konstantin Ivliev remporte l’argent. 

Les compétitions en patinage de vitesse courte piste de ces Jeux olympiques de Pékin prendront fin mercredi avec le couronnement de la championne olympique sur 1500 et la grande finale du relais 5000m chez les hommes.

Dubois adds to his olympic collection on 500m

On the women's side, the best teams in the world were battling for relay gold today while the best male sprinters were fighting for individual glory on 500m.

The four major powerhouses of short track speed skating had an appointment in the grand final of the women's 3000m relay. The Netherlands, China, South Korea and Canada lined up on the starting line in what was expected to be a thrilling final. The Dutch skaters ended up showing their great power by setting a new world record to take the gold. For Canada, after a good part of the race skating at the back of the pack, Courtney Sarault made a powerful pass with eight laps to go to give Canada hope. Unfortunately, two of the last exchanges of the relay were difficult and Canada finished 4th. The Korean skaters crossed the finish line in 2nd place behind the Dutch, while the representatives of the host country, China, offered a bronze medal to their fans.

In the men's 500m, the three skaters who finished first on the distance during the World Cup season last fall could not make it to the final today. Lui Shaolin Sandor and Ren Ziwei saw their runs end in the quarter-finals, while reigning Olympic Champion Wu Dajing had to settle for a win in the B-final. The main event was still promising as Hungarian Liu Shaoang, bronze medallist in the 1000m and Canadian Steven Dubois, silver medallist in the 1500m, took their spot on the starting line alongside Russian Olympic Committee athlete Konstantin Ivliev, Kazakh Abzal Azhgaliyev and Italian Pietro Sighel. Opportunities to overtake in a 500m final are limited and skaters rarely have more than one chance to make a move that will help them win or at least improve their starting position. Dubois, who started fourth on the line, made the choice to make his unique move in the first sixty metres of the race. With an inside pass on the Kazakh after the first turn, the Canadian moved from 4th to 3rd place while in front, Liu and Ivliev had already broken away from the group. Dubois finished 3rd to win his 2nd medal of the games. Meanwhile, Lui Shaoang also added to his collection by winning gold while Konstantin Ivliev won silver. 

The short track speed skating competition of these Beijing Olympic Games will end on Wednesday with the crowning of the Olympic champion in the women's 1500m and the men's 5000m relay.

Courte piste à Pékin: La Reine conserve son trône

Suzanne Schulting a défendu avec brio son titre de championne olympique sur 1000m aujourd’hui à Pékin.

La Néerlandaise Suzanne Schulting, qui avait remporté la médaille d’or sur 1000m aux Jeux de Pyeongchang il y a quatre ans, a débuté la journée en annonçant ses couleurs avec un record du monde dans la première course de la journée. Pour ceux qui rêvent de record, le temps à battre à partir de maintenant sur 1000m sera de 1:26,514. Suite aux vagues de demi-finales, Schulting allait devoir affronter la Sud-Coréenne Choi Min Jeong, l’Américaine Kristen Santos, la Belge Hanne Desmet et l’Italienne Arianna Fontana en grande finale. Si Schulting partait favorite, il était difficile de prévoir le podium d’une finale s’annonçant aussi relevée. Après avoir démontré beaucoup de puissance dans les rondes précédentes, Santos a tenté d’y aller d’un dépassement en fin de course sur Fontana mais cette dernière a fermé la porte de manière illégale. La manœuvre de l’Italienne allait sortir les deux patineuses de la course et ouvrir la porte a Hanne Desmet qui remporte la première médaille olympique belge de l’histoire en courte piste. Suzanne Schulting a été peu embêtée durant la course, mais les efforts soutenus de Choi Min Jeong auront tout de même mené à une fin de course serrée. Finalement, Schulting remporte la médaille d’or devant une Choi Min Jeong émotive alors que Desmet remporte le bronze. 

Dans les autres distances du jour, les hommes ont débuté leur parcours sur 500m et la majorité des gros noms seront de la ronde suivante. Deux Canadiens ont obtenu leurs laissez-passer soit Jordan Pierre-Gilles et le médaillé d’argent sur 1500m Steven Dubois. Pour ce qui est du relais 5000m chez les hommes, le Canada, l’Italie, la Corée du Sud, l’équipe du Comité olympique Russe et la Chine s’affronteront en grande finale mercredi prochain.

Short track in Beijing: The Queen is not leaving the throne

Suzanne Schulting defended her Olympic title on 1000m today in Beijing.

Dutch superstar Suzanne Schulting, who won the gold medal on 1000m at the Pyeongchang Olympic games four years ago, started the day by announcing her colors with a world record in the first race. The time to beat from now on in the distance will be 1:26.514. Following the semifinals, Schulting would have to face South Korea’s Choi Min Jeong, USA’s Kristen Santos, Belgium’s Hanne Desmet and Italy’s Arianna Fontana in the grand final. Although Schulting started as the favorite, it was difficult to predict the podium in such a well balanced final. After showing a lot of power in the previous rounds, Santos tried to overtake Fontana at the end of the race but the Italian closed the door and ended up with a penalty. Fontana's maneuver would take both skaters out of the race and open the door for Hanne Desmet to win Belgium's first ever Olympic medal in short track. Suzanne Schulting seemed in control during the race, but Choi Min Jeong's sustained efforts still led to a close finish. In the end, Schulting won the gold medal finishing ahead of an emotional Choi Min Jeong, while Desmet took the bronze. 

In the other distances of the day, the men started their route to the top in the 500m and most of the big names will be in the next round. Two Canadians are moving forward as Jordan Pierre-Gilles and 1500m silver medallist Steven Dubois both qualified. In the men's 5000m relay, Canada, Italy, South Korea, the Russian Olympic Committee team and China will compete in the grand final next Wednesday.

Steven Dubois wins silver in Beijing / Redemption day for Hwang Dae Heon

A peaceful day in terms of controversy today in short track that saw Hwang Dae Heon crowned champion and Steven Dubois win the first Olympic medal of his career.

It was an unusual scenario in the grand final of the 1500m today in Beijing as ten skaters qualified or were advanced to the main event. An atypical situation that could have led to a race full of ugly clashes but to everyone's delight, it did not. The weaker skaters who had been advanced because of penalties in the previous round could not keep up with the pace set by the top skaters and the cream of the crop came back to the surface in a clean and exciting final.

After a few laps at the back of the pack, Korea’s Hwang Dae Heon, who had not been able to do himself justice over 1000m at the beginning of the week due to a penalty, used his great power to increase the pace and pass the whole group by the outside. A decision that allowed him to take the lead. Following in Hwang's footsteps, Steven Dubois used the same strategy, relying on his stamina to move into second place. The other eight skaters would have to fight for the bronze medal because both men looked poised and confident as pack leaders. Finally, Hwang Dae Heon became Olympic champion in the 1500m, he had won silver in the 500m in Pyeongchang, while Canada’s Steven Dubois won his first Olympic medal by finishing 2nd. A fully deserved medal that completed the change of the guard of the Canadian team as Charles Hamelin was penalized earlier in the day in the last individual Olympic race of his career. Semen Elistratov representing the Russian Olympic Committee finished in 3rd place.

In addition to the full 1500m competition on the men’s side today, the women raced their 1000m qualifying rounds and 3000m relay semifinals. While most of the favorites in the 1000m made their way to the next round, Canada’s Kim Boutin unfortunately crashed out of the last turn as she was sailing in first place towards the finish line. In the 3000m relay, the four power houses in short track speed skating will face off in the grand final as Canada, the Netherlands, China and South Korea have secured their tickets to the big show.
