A masterful performance by Canada in the 5000m relay

Short track enthusiasts were treated to perhaps the best day of competition at the 2022 Olympics as the final races were held today in Beijing.

A thrilling final in the 5000m

All eyes were on the 5000m relay event today as all the elements were in place for a historic final. Despite the absence of the Hungarians, the defending champions of the 2018 Games, the race was almost sure to offer quite a show with five great teams taking place on the starting grid: China, South Korea, Italy, Canada and the athletes representing the Russian Olympic Committee. One thing was for sure, China had a lot of pressure on their shoulders, as they were skating at home. Moreover, the presence of the Koreans in the final added an additional pressure on China knowing the rivalry between these two countries. For Canada, this race was going to mark the end of the Olympic career of Charles Hamelin, the flagship of Canadian speed skating for over 15 years.  Korea could also count on a veteran, Kwak Yoon Gy, who managed to regain his place on the national team after an absence of a few years. After a strategic race led by the Koreans for a good part of the event, the first major incident occurred with eleven laps to go when a loss of balance before an exchange pushed China off the podium. If China made a serious mistake, the Canadian team had a perfect race. With twenty laps to go, the Canadian machine started and no one could stop it. From Pierre-Gilles' pass to move up from third to second, to the following exchange allowing Dubois to take the lead, to the increase of the pace by the veteran Hamelin and the incredible burst of speed by Pascal Dion in his last two presences on the track, all this culminated in a victory for Canada. A masterful performance. Korea won the silver medal while Italy took the bronze. The win made Charles Hamelin the most decorated short track skater in Canadian Olympic history with six medals and Steven Dubois completed his Beijing 2022 collection with a gold medal after winning silver and bronze earlier in the competition. 

The cream rises to the top in the women's 1500m

After some relatively quiet quarter-final races, three skaters clearly showed their true colors in the semi-finals. Choi Min Jeong with an Olympic record on the distance, Suzanne Schulting with confident passes in traffic and Arianna Fontana with a powerful outside pass. It was clear that Fontana, now 31 years old, wanted a chance to add to her legend by competing in the grand final. Lee Yubin, Xandra Velzeboer, Hanne Desmet and Han Yutong had the tough task of trying to beat these three favourites. Han made her move really early by going full speed after only two laps, but changed her mind when she saw Suzanne Schulting wouldn't let her get away. With four laps to go, the action started to heat up as Arianna Fontana moved from 5th to 2nd with an outside pass, putting pressure on Choi Min Jeong and the pace picked up. A pace that only Choi, Fontana and Schulting could sustain. At the finish line, Choi entered in first place winning her 3rd Olympic medal in Beijing and 5th in her career. Arianna Fontana once again sets a new mark for the number of medals won at the Olympics with her 11th career medal, her 3rd in Beijing. Meanwhile in 3rd place, Suzanne Schulting wins her 4th medal of the Games, her 6th visit to a podium in two Olympic participations. 

Now that the Beijing Olympics are behind them, the athletes will travel to Montreal for the World Championships which will be held from March 18 to 20. As for the best junior skaters in the world, the Junior World Championships will be held in Gdansk, Poland from March 4 to 6.

Les amateurs de courte piste ont probablement eu droit à la meilleure journée de compétition de ces Jeux de Pékin alors que se tenaient les dernières courses au programme.

Une finale des plus excitante sur 5000m

Les yeux étaient tournés vers l’épreuve du relais 5000m aujourd’hui alors que tous les éléments étaient en place pour avoir une finale historique. Malgré l’absence des Hongrois, champions en titre des Jeux de 2018, la course promettait tout un spectacle alors que cinq grandes équipes y prenaient part soit la Chine, la Corée du Sud, l’Italie, le Canada et les athlètes représentant le Comité olympique russe. Une chose était sûre, la Chine avait une pression énorme sur les épaules, elle qui patinait à la maison. De plus, il est facile d'imaginer que la présence des Sud-coréens en finale ajoutait une pression supplémentaire à la Chine quand on connaît la rivalité entre ces deux pays. Du côté du Canada, cette course allait marquer la fin de la carrière olympique de Charles Hamelin, figure de proue du patinage de vitesse canadien depuis plus de 15 ans.  La Corée pouvait elle aussi compter sur un vétéran, Kwak Yoon Gy ayant réussi à reprendre sa place sur l’équipe nationale après une absence de quelques années. Après une course stratégique menée sans embûche par les Coréens pendant une bonne partie de l’épreuve, le premier incident majeur s’est produit avec onze tours à faire alors qu’une perte d’équilibre avant un échange aura écarté la Chine du podium. Si la Chine a commis une grave erreur, l’équipe Canadienne s’est offerte un sans faute. C’est avec vingt tours à faire que la machine canadienne s’est mise en marche et plus personne n’allait pouvoir l’arrêter. Le dépassement de Pierre-Gilles pour remonter de la 3e à la 2e place. L’échange suivant permettant à Dubois de prendre la tête. L’augmentation du rythme de la course par le vétéran Hamelin et l’incroyable prise de vitesse de Pascal Dion lors de ses deux dernières présences sur le tracé. Tous ces éléments parfaitement exécutés allaient culminer avec la victoire du Canada. Une performance magistrale. La Corée remporte la médaille d’argent alors que l’Italie repart avec le bronze. Cette victoire permet à Charles Hamelin de devenir le patineur en courte piste le plus médaillé de l’histoire canadienne aux Olympiques avec six médailles et à Steven Dubois de compléter sa collection de Pékin 2022 avec une médaille d’or après avoir remporté l’argent et le bronze plus tôt dans la compétition. 

La crème remonte à la surface au 1500m

Après des quarts de finale sans grande surprise, trois patineuses ont clairement annoncé leurs couleurs lors des vagues de demi-finale. Choi Min Jeong avec un record olympique sur la distance, Suzanne Schulting avec des dépassements assumés dans la circulation et Arianna Fontana avec un dépassement extérieur tout en puissance. Fontana avait le couteau entre les dents en demi-finale et voulait clairement avoir la chance d’ajouter à sa légende en participant à la grande finale. Lee Yubin, Xandra Velzeboer, Hanne Desmet et Han Yutong avaient la lourde tâche de tenter de battre ces trois têtes de série. Han a tenté sa chance dès le début en partant à fond de train après seulement deux tours, mais s’est ravisée en voyant Suzanne Schulting ne pas la laisser décamper. C’est avec quatre tours à faire que cette finale s’est enflammée alors que Arianna Fontana est passée de la 5e place à la 2e avec un dépassement extérieur, mettant ainsi de la pression sur Choi Min Jeong. Le rythme s’est accéléré. Un rythme que seuls Choi, Fontana et Schulting pouvaient soutenir. À la ligne d’arrivée, Choi entre en première position remportant une 3e médaille olympique à Pékin et une 5e en carrière. Elle est suivie par Arianna Fontana qui remonte encore une fois la marque à battre pour le nombre de médailles remportées aux Olympiques avec une 11e en carrière, une 3e à Pékin. Pendant ce temps en 3e place, Suzanne Schulting remporte sa 4e médaille des Jeux, sa 6e visite sur un podium en deux participations olympiques. 

Maintenant que les Jeux olympiques de Pékin sont derrière eux, les athlètes ont rendez-vous à Montréal pour les Championnats du monde qui se tiendront du 18 au 20 mars prochain. Du côté des athlètes juniors, les Championnats du monde juniors se tiendront du 4 au 6 mars prochain à Gdansk en Pologne.

Courte piste à Pékin: La Reine conserve son trône

Suzanne Schulting a défendu avec brio son titre de championne olympique sur 1000m aujourd’hui à Pékin.

La Néerlandaise Suzanne Schulting, qui avait remporté la médaille d’or sur 1000m aux Jeux de Pyeongchang il y a quatre ans, a débuté la journée en annonçant ses couleurs avec un record du monde dans la première course de la journée. Pour ceux qui rêvent de record, le temps à battre à partir de maintenant sur 1000m sera de 1:26,514. Suite aux vagues de demi-finales, Schulting allait devoir affronter la Sud-Coréenne Choi Min Jeong, l’Américaine Kristen Santos, la Belge Hanne Desmet et l’Italienne Arianna Fontana en grande finale. Si Schulting partait favorite, il était difficile de prévoir le podium d’une finale s’annonçant aussi relevée. Après avoir démontré beaucoup de puissance dans les rondes précédentes, Santos a tenté d’y aller d’un dépassement en fin de course sur Fontana mais cette dernière a fermé la porte de manière illégale. La manœuvre de l’Italienne allait sortir les deux patineuses de la course et ouvrir la porte a Hanne Desmet qui remporte la première médaille olympique belge de l’histoire en courte piste. Suzanne Schulting a été peu embêtée durant la course, mais les efforts soutenus de Choi Min Jeong auront tout de même mené à une fin de course serrée. Finalement, Schulting remporte la médaille d’or devant une Choi Min Jeong émotive alors que Desmet remporte le bronze. 

Dans les autres distances du jour, les hommes ont débuté leur parcours sur 500m et la majorité des gros noms seront de la ronde suivante. Deux Canadiens ont obtenu leurs laissez-passer soit Jordan Pierre-Gilles et le médaillé d’argent sur 1500m Steven Dubois. Pour ce qui est du relais 5000m chez les hommes, le Canada, l’Italie, la Corée du Sud, l’équipe du Comité olympique Russe et la Chine s’affronteront en grande finale mercredi prochain.

Short track in Beijing: The Queen is not leaving the throne

Suzanne Schulting defended her Olympic title on 1000m today in Beijing.

Dutch superstar Suzanne Schulting, who won the gold medal on 1000m at the Pyeongchang Olympic games four years ago, started the day by announcing her colors with a world record in the first race. The time to beat from now on in the distance will be 1:26.514. Following the semifinals, Schulting would have to face South Korea’s Choi Min Jeong, USA’s Kristen Santos, Belgium’s Hanne Desmet and Italy’s Arianna Fontana in the grand final. Although Schulting started as the favorite, it was difficult to predict the podium in such a well balanced final. After showing a lot of power in the previous rounds, Santos tried to overtake Fontana at the end of the race but the Italian closed the door and ended up with a penalty. Fontana's maneuver would take both skaters out of the race and open the door for Hanne Desmet to win Belgium's first ever Olympic medal in short track. Suzanne Schulting seemed in control during the race, but Choi Min Jeong's sustained efforts still led to a close finish. In the end, Schulting won the gold medal finishing ahead of an emotional Choi Min Jeong, while Desmet took the bronze. 

In the other distances of the day, the men started their route to the top in the 500m and most of the big names will be in the next round. Two Canadians are moving forward as Jordan Pierre-Gilles and 1500m silver medallist Steven Dubois both qualified. In the men's 5000m relay, Canada, Italy, South Korea, the Russian Olympic Committee team and China will compete in the grand final next Wednesday.

World cup Debrecen: Dion keeps on shining for Canada

Pascal Dion leaves Hungary with four medals. Another great weekend for the 27-year-old Canadian.

Dion on the podium once again in the 1000m

Canada's Pascal Dion, leader in the 1000m rankings after two legs, won silver today in the distance to stay in the lead. However, he is only a few points ahead of Korea's Hwang Dae-heon. If both athletes make it to the grand final next weekend in Dordrecht, it promises to be a very exciting show. Dion also helped the Canadian team finish ahead of the Koreans (silver) and the Hungarians (bronze) in the 5000m relay event. Let's not forget that Dion won his first career medal on 1500m yesterday and helped Canada win in the mixed relay by skating in the quarterfinal.

Schulting is untouchable

On the women's side, it seems that nothing and no one was going to stop Suzanne Schulting this weekend in Debrecen. After winning gold in the 1500m and 500m yesterday she added gold in the 1000m today finishing ahead of Choi Min-jeong (silver) and Natalia Maliszewska (bronze). In addition to her individual prowess, Schulting led the Dutch women's team to victory in the 3000m relay to complete her perfect weekend. Canada won the silver medal in this distance while China took the bronze.

Mixed Relay

After a desperate move by Italy's Pietro Sieghel in the semi-final led to a penalty resulting in an advancement, five teams reached the finals of the mixed relay event as Korea, Hungary, Canada, China and France took their places on the starting line. Dominant throughout the race, China won gold finishing ahead of Canada. France also reached the podium to win the bronze medal. 

Other news for Canada

As for the other Canadian performances on this last day of competition in Debrecen, Courtney Sarault finished 5th in the 1000m following a penalty in the grand final. Jordan Pierre-Gilles obtained the same result. The leaders of the Canadian team Kim Boutin and Charles Hamelin had seen their journey end in the quarter finals of the individual distance.

The athletes will meet next weekend in Dordrecht in the Netherlands to complete the World Cup season.

Coupe du monde de Debrecen: Dion continue de briller pour le Canada

Pascal Dion quitte la Hongrie avec quatre médailles. Un autre excellent weekend pour le Canadien de 27 ans.

Encore un podium sur 1000m pour Dion

Le Canadien Pascal Dion, meneur au classement sur 1000m après deux manches, a remporté l’argent aujourd’hui sur cette distance. Une performance qui lui permet de demeurer en tête. Il ne devance toutefois le Coréen Hwang Dae-heon que par quelques points. Si les deux athlètes atteignent la grande finale le weekend prochain à Dordrecht, le spectacle risque d’être des plus enlevant. Dion a également aidé l’équipe canadienne à terminer devant les Coréens (argent) et les Hongrois (bronze) à l’épreuve du relais 5000m. Rappelons que Dion avait remporté hier sa première médaille en carrière sur 1500m en plus d'aider le Canada à se qualifier au relais mixte en patinant lors de la ronde quart de finale.

Schulting, indomptable chez les femmes

Il semble que rien ni personne n'allait arrêter Suzanne Schulting ce weekend à Debrecen. Après l’or sur 1500m et 500m hier elle a ajouté l’or sur 1000m aujourd’hui terminant devant Choi Min-jeong (argent) et Natalia Maliszewska (bronze). En plus de ses prouesses sur le plan individuel, Schulting a mené l’équipe féminine néerlandaise à la victoire au relais 3000m pour compléter son weekend parfait. Le Canada remporte la médaille d’argent sur cette distance alors que la Chine remporte la médaille de bronze.

Relais mixte

Cinq pays se retrouvaient en finale du relais mixte dû à une manœuvre désespérée de l’Italien Pietro Sieghel en semifinale qui avait mené à une pénalité résultant en un avancement. La Corée, la Hongrie, le Canada, la Chine et la France prenaient place sur la ligne de départ de cette finale. Dominant tout au long de la course, la Chine remporte l’or devant le Canada. La France atteint le podium et repart avec la médaille de bronze. 

Plus sur le Canada

En ce qui a trait aux autres performances canadiennes en ce dernier jour de compétition à Debrecen, Courtney Sarault termine 5e sur 1000m suite à une pénalité en grande finale. Jordan Pierre-Gilles obtient le même résultat. Les leaders de l’équipe canadienne Kim Boutin et Charles Hamelin avaient vu leur parcours se terminer en quart de finale sur la distance individuelle. 

Les athlètes ont rendez-vous le weekend prochain à Dordrecht aux Pays-Bas pour boucler la saison de Coupe du monde 2021-2022.

World cup Debrecen: Schulting in gold on the first day of the finals

The Főnix Arena in Debrecen, Hungary is the scene of the 3rd round of the World Cup in short track speed skating this weekend and it was finals day in 1500m and 500m today.

Ren Ziwei and Suzanne Schulting prevail on 1500m

Today was a day of celebration for Liu Shaolin Sandor who was celebrating his 26th birthday. However, his opponents in the 1500m grand final had no intention of doing him any favors, especially China's Ren Ziwei, Canada's Pascal Dion and Korea's Park Jang-hyuk who won gold, silver and bronze respectively. Liu finished in 5th place. Pascal Dion is currently 4th overall in the 1500m and is currently sitting atop the 1000m rankings.

In the women's event, the top five skaters in the World Cup 1500m rankings after two legs were in the grand final today in Debrecen. In a very competitive final, Lee Yubin was able to maintain her top ranking by finishing second in this final, but she is now only a few points ahead of the big winner of today's final, Suzanne Schulting, who was able to withstand Lee and Choi Min-jeong's sustained attacks in the last two laps to take the gold. Canada's Courtney Sarault won the bronze and is now fourth in the standings with one event to go this season. 

Schulting and the Lius are all smiles on 500m

In a final led largely by world record holder Kim Boutin, it was Suzanne Schulting who finally crossed the finish line in first place adding a second gold medal to her collection today. Italy's Ariana Fontana won silver while Boutin finished in third place. The young Canadian Florence Brunelle finished in fourth place. 

In the men's event, the Liu brothers put on quite a show for their fans as the photo finish was needed to determine the gold medal winner. Liu Shaolin Sandor finally gave himself a birthday present by finishing one hundredth of a second ahead of his younger brother Liu Shaoang to grab the gold. The bronze medal was won by Ren Ziwei from China who was on the podium for the second time today.

The finals on 1000m and the different relay events will be held tomorrow.

Coupe du monde de Debrecen: Schulting en or au premier jour des finales

Le Főnix Arena de Debrecen en Hongrie est le théâtre de la 3e manche de Coupe du monde en patinage de vitesse courte piste ce weekend et c'était jour de finales sur 1500m et 500m aujourd’hui.

Ren Ziwei et Suzanne Schulting l’emporte sur 1500m

C’était jour de fête aujourd’hui pour Liu Shaolin Sandor qui fêtait son 26e anniversaire de naissance. Ses adversaires en grande finale sur 1500m n’avaient toutefois pas l’intention de lui faire de cadeau, surtout le Chinois Ren Ziwei, le Canadien Pascal Dion et le Coréen Park Jang-hyuk qui ont respectivement remporté l’or, l’argent et le bronze. Liu a terminé au 5e rang. Pascal Dion est actuellement 4e au classement général du 1500m en plus de trôner provisoirement au sommet du classement sur 1000m. 

Chez les femmes, les cinq premières patineuses au classement de la Coupe du monde sur 1500m après deux manches étaient de la grande finale aujourd’hui à Debrecen. Dans une finale chaudement disputée, Lee Yubin a réussi à maintenir sa première place au classement en terminant deuxième de cette finale, mais elle n’a plus que quelques points d’avance sur la grande gagnante de la finale aujourd’hui, Suzanne Schulting, qui a réussi à résister aux attaques soutenues de Lee et Choi Min-jeong lors des deux derniers tours pour remporter l’or. La Canadienne Courtney Sarault remporte le bronze et se retrouve au quatrième rang du classement avec une épreuve à compléter cette saison. 

Schulting et les frères Liu tout sourire sur 500m

Dans une finale menée en grande partie par la détentrice du record du monde Kim Boutin, c’est Suzanne Schulting qui a finalement passé la ligne d’arrivée en première place ajoutant une deuxième médaille d’or à sa collection aujourd'hui. L’Italienne Ariana Fontana remporte l’argent alors que Boutin termine au troisième rang. La jeune Canadienne Florence Brunelle termine au 4e rang. 

Chez les hommes, les frères Liu ont offert tout un spectacle à leurs partisans dans une finale nécessitant le photo-finish pour déterminer le gagnant de la médaille d’or. Liu Shaolin Sandor s’offre finalement un cadeau de fête en terminant un centième de seconde devant son frère cadet Liu Shaoang pour remporter les grands honneurs. Le bronze fut remporté par le Chinois Ren Ziwei qui montait sur le podium pour la deuxième fois aujourd’hui.

Les finales sur 1000m ainsi que celles des épreuves de relais auront lieu demain.

Coupe du monde de Nagoya en courte piste: l'étoile du weekend à Confortola

Yuri Confortola s’offre un cadeau en or à Nagoya tandis que Pascal Dion et Kristen Santos ajoutent à leur solide début de saison.

Confortola capture son vif d'or

C’est au Nippon Gaishi Arena de Nagoya au Japon que s’est déroulée la 2e manche de la saison de Coupe du monde 2021-22 en courte piste. Si la victoire de Hwang Dae-heon sur 500m était prévisible et celle de Ren Ziwei sur 1000m n’était pas nécessairement une grande surprise, la victoire de Yuri Confortola sur 1500m avait de quoi mettre un sourire sur le visage des fans de patinage de vitesse courte piste. Avec cette victoire sur 1500m, l’Italien de 35 ans a mis la main sur sa première médaille d’or individuelle en carrière. Au lieu de jouer au chat et à la souris pour une bonne partie de la course comme il est souvent le cas lors d’un 1500m, Confortola a pris le pari de décamper à toute vitesse dès le départ. Une stratégie payante pour celui qui est le pilier de l’équipe nationale masculine d’Italie depuis tant d'années. Quant au relais 5000m, le Canada a remporté la médaille d’or devançant la Chine et la Hongrie.

Santos sur une lancée

Du côté des femmes, l’Américaine Kristen Santos a repris là où elle avait laissé le weekend dernier, ajoutant une médaille d’or sur 1000m à sa collection 2021-22. L’Italienne Arianna Fontana a remporté la grande finale du 500m alors que la Néerlandaise Suzanne Schulting en a fait de même sur 1500m. Schulting a également aidé son équipe à remporter le relais 3000m. Au relais mixte, la Russie l’a emporté devant la Chine et la Hongrie.

Une autre pour Dion

Du côté du Canada, en plus de la victoire de l’équipe masculine au relais, Pascal Dion a remporté une autre médaille de bronze sur 1000m cette saison, ce qui lui donne le premier rang provisoire au classement de la Coupe du monde sur la distance après deux épreuves sur quatre. Dion a également pris part à la finale principale sur 1500m, terminant au 6e rang. Toujours chez les hommes, Steven Dubois a été pénalisé lors de la grande finale du 500m. Chez les femmes, le weekend de Kim Boutin se termine avec une 4e place sur 500m et une 5e place sur 1000m. Danaé Blais quant a elle terminé 12e sur 1500m.

Les athlètes ont maintenant rendez-vous en Hongrie du 18 au 21 novembre pour l’avant dernière manche de la saison en Coupe du monde.

World cup in Nagoya: Confortola gets first star of the weekend

A first gold for Confortola 

The Nippon Gaishi Arena in Nagoya, Japan was the venue for the 2nd leg of the 2021-22 World Cup short track season. If Hwang Dae-heon's 500m victory was predictable and Ren Ziwei's 1000m victory was not necessarily a big surprise, Yuri Confortola's 1500m victory definitely puts a smile on the face of short track fans. With this victory, the 35-year-old Italian won his first career individual gold medal on the circuit. Instead of playing cat and mouse for a good part of the race, as it is often the case in a 1500m race, Confortola took the gamble of taking off at full speed from the start. A strategy that paid off for the pillar of the Italian men's national team for so many years. 

In the 5000m relay, Canada won the gold medal finishing ahead of China and Hungary. 

Santos once again

On the women's side, USA's Kristen Santos picked up where she left off last weekend, adding a gold medal in the 1000m to her 2021-22 collection. Italy's Arianna Fontana won the 500m grand final while the Netherlands' Suzanne Schulting did the same in the 1500m. Schulting also helped her team win the 3000m relay. In the mixed relay, Russia won ahead of China and Hungary. 

Dion gets another one for Canada

For Canada, in addition to the men's relay victory, Pascal Dion won another bronze medal in the 1000m this season, giving him the provisional lead in the World Cup standings after two of four events. Dion also competed in the main final on 1500m, finishing in 6th place. Also on the men's side, Steven Dubois was penalized in the 500m main final. On the women's side, Kim Boutin's weekend ended with a 4th place finish in the 500m and a 5th place in the 1000m. Danaé Blais finished 12th in the 1500m. 

The athletes will now head to Hungary to compete from November 18 to 21 for the penultimate round of the World Cup season.
