Korean domination in short track at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games

Korean short track skaters were as strong as expected at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games held in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Korea took the win in every individual distance raced this weekend in Lausanne and had a skater in every mixed NOC relay team that medalled.  

Seo Whi-Min was dominant last weekend in Lausanne winning both the ladies’ 500m and 1000m in a convincing way. Her closest rival was her teammate Kim Chanseo who finished second on 1000m. Sixteen-year-old Florence Brunelle from Canada had a great competition winning bronze on 500m and 1000m. Dutch Michelle Velzeboer got silver on 500m.

We saw two similar results on the men’s side of the competition as both the 500m and 1000m podiums were composed of two Koreans and a Chinese. Korean Jang Sung Woo won the 1000m in front of his teammate Lee Jeong Min while Chinese Li Kongchao collected bronze. On 500m, the two Korean teammates swapped positions as Lee got gold and Jang silver. This time, Zhang Tianyi from China finished in third.

The races ended with the mixed NOC relay, a relay event where teams are formed of four skaters from different countries. The winning team was composed of Korean Kim Chanseo, Japanese Shogo Miyata, Dutch Diede van Oorschot and American Jonathan So. Luliia Beresvena, Chang Hui, Gabriel Volet and Jang Sungwoo took silver while Olivia Weedon, Seo Whi Min, Thomas Nadalini and Ethan de Rose got bronze.

Korean skaters are aiming for glory at the Youth Olympic Games

The best 18 years and younger short track speed skaters in the world will fight for Youth olympic glory from the 18th to the 22th of January in Lausanne, Switzerland.

It is at the Malley rink in Lausanne that 61 skaters from 32 nations will fight for Youth Olympics medals on 500m, 1000m and mixed relay.


For some of these skaters, the Youth Olympic games will be the first international competition of a prolific speed skating career. Successful senior skaters such as Hwang Dae-Heon, Kazuki Yoshinaga, Shaoang Liu, Kim Ji-Yoo, Petra Jaszapati and Anna Seidel were amongst the medalists of the 2016 Youth Olympic Games.

It is hard to say who’s going to stand out of the crowd this year, but Korea is surely a good bet. Multi World Cup medalist and Vice four continents champion Seo Whi-Min will be one of the favorites in the ladies’ competition while her teammates Jang Sung-Woo, Kim Chan-Seo and Lee Jeong-Min will also be some of the strongest competitors to skate in Lausanne.

Jeux olympiques de la jeunesse: Les Colombiens dominent

Gabriela Rueda Rueda et Jhony Angulo ont été couronnés Champions olympiques de la jeunesse lundi à Buenos Aires.

Les meilleurs patineurs sur roues d'âge junior étaient réunis à Buenos Aires pour la première apparition de leur sport aux Jeux olympiques de la jeunesse. Les Colombiens Gabriela Rueda Rueda et Jhony Angulo ont remporté le classement cumulatif et les titres de champions olympiques.

La Colombienne Gabriela Rueda Rueda a été dominante et a remporté les 3 distances aux programmes. Sa plus proche compétitrice fut la Française Honorine Barrault qui a cumulé une seconde place sur 1000m, une 3e place sur 5000m et une 4e place sur 500m.  L’Italienne Giorgia Valanzano a complété le podium cumulatif féminin.

Pour s'emparer du titre au cumulatif, Jhony Angulo a remporté le 1000m, terminé second au 5000m et troisième au 500m. L’Italien Vincenzo Maiorca a remporté le 5000m et le 500m mais a eu un 1000m plus difficile et c’est ce qui a fait la différence avec la constance d’Angulo. Le Néerlandais Merijn Scheperkamp a pris le troisième rang cumulatif grâce à deux 4e position et une 7e position.
