Colombia and France stand out in Ibagué

The 2021 Inline Speed Skating World Championships ended today in Ibagué, Colombia.

At the end of the track and road championships, Colombian skaters won 59 of the 126 medals available. Among these 59 medals, 33 of the 42 gold medals up for grab were won. France took the second place with 19 medals including 4 gold while Taiwan took the third place with five medals including two gold.

Colombia on top

Led by Luz Karime Garzon (3 gold and 2 silver) and Geiny Pajaro (3 gold and 1 silver) in the senior category, Colombia took the title of best nation for the 18th time in 21 years.

Beddiaf / Ferrié duo leads the charge for France

The long-time French duo of Nolan Beddiaf and Martin Ferrié are one of the big reasons for France's success at the 2021 World Championships. All three races in which the two were competing were won by one of them. Ferrie won the 15km Road Elimination and the Marathon, as well as participating in France's silver medal in the relay and taking bronze in the 10km Track Points Race. Beddiaf won the 10km road race and finished second to Ferrié in the 15km. Among the seniors, Mathilde Pedronno, Marie Dupuy, Marine Lefeuvre and Gwendal le Pivert all had their moments on the podium as well. 

Historic medal for India

Junior skater Velkumar Anandkumar made history in the 15 km road elimination. By finishing second behind Colombian Miguel Fonseca, he became the first skater from India to reach a podium at the World Championships. 

Title #5 in 100m for Fernandez

The great Spanish skater Ioseba Fernandez won the 100m gold medal for the fifth time in his career. He is increasingly claming his place among the undisputed legends of inline skating.

Yang Ho-Chen leads Taiwan to two gold medals

Taiwan's Yang Ho-Chen led her country to two gold medals at the track championships. She won the 1000m and took part in her team's relay victory.

La Colombie et la France se démarquent à Ibagué

Les championnats du monde 2021 de patinage à roues alignées ont pris fin hier à Ibagué en Colombie.

Au terme du championnat sur piste et du championnat sur route, les patineurs colombiens ont raflé 59 des 126 médailles disponibles toutes catégories d’âge confondues. Parmi ces 59 médailles, on retrouve 33 des 42 médailles d’or disponibles. Les Français ont pris le deuxième rang avec 19 médailles dont 4 d’or tandis que Taïwan a pris le troisième rang avec cinq médailles dont deux d’or.

La Colombie au sommet

Menée chez les seniors par Luz Karime Garzon (3 médailles d’or et 2 d’argent) et Geiny Pajaro (3 médailles d’or et 1 d’argent), la Colombie s’est emparée du titre de meilleure nation pour une 18e fois en 21 ans.

Le duo Beddiaf / Ferrié mène la charge pour les Français

Le duo français de longue date composé de Nolan Beddiaf et Martin Ferrié est l’une des grandes raisons du succès de la France aux Championnats du monde 2021. Les trois courses où les deux participaient ont été remportées par l’un d’eux. Ferrie a remporté le 15 km à Élimination sur route et le marathon, en plus de participer à la médaille d’argent de la France au relais et de rafler le bronze au 10km à points sur piste. Beddiaf a quant à lui remporté le 10km sur route et terminé deuxième derrière Ferrié au 15 km. Chez les seniors, Mathilde Pedronno, Marie Dupuy, Marine Lefeuvre et Gwendal le Pivert ont tous eu leurs moments sur le podium également. 

Médaille historique pour l’Inde

Le jeune Velkumar Anandkumar a marqué l’histoire au 15 km à élimination sur route chez les juniors. En terminant deuxième derrière le Colombien, Miguel Fonseca, il est devenu le premier patineur de l’Inde à monter sur un podium aux championnats du monde. 

Titre #5 sur 100m pour Fernandez

Le grand patineur espagnol Ioseba Fernandez a remporté la médaille d’or du 100m pour une cinquième fois en carrière lors de ces championnats. Il fait de plus en plus sa place parmi les légendes incontestées du patinage sur roues.

Yang Ho-Chen mène Taïwan vers deux médailles d’or

La Taïwanaise Yang Ho-Chen a mené son pays vers deux médailles d’or au cours du championnat sur piste. Elle a remporté le 1000m et pris part à la victoire de son équipe au relais.

Coupe du monde de Nagoya en courte piste: l'étoile du weekend à Confortola

Yuri Confortola s’offre un cadeau en or à Nagoya tandis que Pascal Dion et Kristen Santos ajoutent à leur solide début de saison.

Confortola capture son vif d'or

C’est au Nippon Gaishi Arena de Nagoya au Japon que s’est déroulée la 2e manche de la saison de Coupe du monde 2021-22 en courte piste. Si la victoire de Hwang Dae-heon sur 500m était prévisible et celle de Ren Ziwei sur 1000m n’était pas nécessairement une grande surprise, la victoire de Yuri Confortola sur 1500m avait de quoi mettre un sourire sur le visage des fans de patinage de vitesse courte piste. Avec cette victoire sur 1500m, l’Italien de 35 ans a mis la main sur sa première médaille d’or individuelle en carrière. Au lieu de jouer au chat et à la souris pour une bonne partie de la course comme il est souvent le cas lors d’un 1500m, Confortola a pris le pari de décamper à toute vitesse dès le départ. Une stratégie payante pour celui qui est le pilier de l’équipe nationale masculine d’Italie depuis tant d'années. Quant au relais 5000m, le Canada a remporté la médaille d’or devançant la Chine et la Hongrie.

Santos sur une lancée

Du côté des femmes, l’Américaine Kristen Santos a repris là où elle avait laissé le weekend dernier, ajoutant une médaille d’or sur 1000m à sa collection 2021-22. L’Italienne Arianna Fontana a remporté la grande finale du 500m alors que la Néerlandaise Suzanne Schulting en a fait de même sur 1500m. Schulting a également aidé son équipe à remporter le relais 3000m. Au relais mixte, la Russie l’a emporté devant la Chine et la Hongrie.

Une autre pour Dion

Du côté du Canada, en plus de la victoire de l’équipe masculine au relais, Pascal Dion a remporté une autre médaille de bronze sur 1000m cette saison, ce qui lui donne le premier rang provisoire au classement de la Coupe du monde sur la distance après deux épreuves sur quatre. Dion a également pris part à la finale principale sur 1500m, terminant au 6e rang. Toujours chez les hommes, Steven Dubois a été pénalisé lors de la grande finale du 500m. Chez les femmes, le weekend de Kim Boutin se termine avec une 4e place sur 500m et une 5e place sur 1000m. Danaé Blais quant a elle terminé 12e sur 1500m.

Les athlètes ont maintenant rendez-vous en Hongrie du 18 au 21 novembre pour l’avant dernière manche de la saison en Coupe du monde.

World cup in Nagoya: Confortola gets first star of the weekend

Yuri Confortola catches the golden snitch in Nagoya while Pascal Dion and Kristen Santos add to their strong start to the season.

A first gold for Confortola 

The Nippon Gaishi Arena in Nagoya, Japan was the venue for the 2nd leg of the 2021-22 World Cup short track season. If Hwang Dae-heon's 500m victory was predictable and Ren Ziwei's 1000m victory was not necessarily a big surprise, Yuri Confortola's 1500m victory definitely puts a smile on the face of short track fans. With this victory, the 35-year-old Italian won his first career individual gold medal on the circuit. Instead of playing cat and mouse for a good part of the race, as it is often the case in a 1500m race, Confortola took the gamble of taking off at full speed from the start. A strategy that paid off for the pillar of the Italian men's national team for so many years. 

In the 5000m relay, Canada won the gold medal finishing ahead of China and Hungary. 

Santos once again

On the women's side, USA's Kristen Santos picked up where she left off last weekend, adding a gold medal in the 1000m to her 2021-22 collection. Italy's Arianna Fontana won the 500m grand final while the Netherlands' Suzanne Schulting did the same in the 1500m. Schulting also helped her team win the 3000m relay. In the mixed relay, Russia won ahead of China and Hungary. 

Dion gets another one for Canada

For Canada, in addition to the men's relay victory, Pascal Dion won another bronze medal in the 1000m this season, giving him the provisional lead in the World Cup standings after two of four events. Dion also competed in the main final on 1500m, finishing in 6th place. Also on the men's side, Steven Dubois was penalized in the 500m main final. On the women's side, Kim Boutin's weekend ended with a 4th place finish in the 500m and a 5th place in the 1000m. Danaé Blais finished 12th in the 1500m. 

The athletes will now head to Hungary to compete from November 18 to 21 for the penultimate round of the World Cup season.

Première manche de Coupe du monde complétée en courte piste

C’est ce weekend à Pékin qu’avait lieu la première manche de Coupe du monde de la saison 2021-22 en patinage de vitesse courte piste.

Habitudes un peu chamboulées sur 1500m

En plus d’être la première épreuve de Coupe du monde depuis février 2020, la compétition du week-end servait également d’épreuve test en vue des Jeux olympiques de Beijing 2022 qui auront lieu du 4 au 20 février prochain. Toujours dominante sur 1500m, la Corée nous avait habitué à voir Choi Min-jeong presque systématiquement monter sur le podium de la distance dans les dernières années. En ouverture de rideau de cette nouvelle saison, c’est sa compatriote Lee Yu-bin qui a remporté les honneurs sur la distance ce weekend. La Canadienne Courtney Sarault (argent) et l’Américaine Kristen Santos (bronze) accompagnent Lee sur le podium. Du côté des hommes, le Russe Semen Elistratov termine au premier rang devançant au fil d’arrivée le Kazakhstanais Adil Galiakhmetov et le Chinois An Kai. À noter qu'aucun Coréen n'a participé à la finale principale chez les hommes. Une situation hors de l'ordinaire. 

Santos ajoute à sa collection sur 1000m

Sur 1000m, la Néerlandaise Suzanne Schulting a mis la main sur sa première médaille de la saison en remportant l’or. La Coréenne Kim Ji-yoo termine au deuxième rang alors que Kristen Santos monte pour la deuxième fois sur le podium ce week-end. Plus tard lors de la dernière journée de compétition, Santos a également aidé son équipe à battre le record américain du relais 3000m féminin en remportant la finale B sur la distance. Santos était ravie de ses performances de la fin de semaine. "Je me suis sentie vraiment bien ce week-end. J'ai l'habitude d'être extrêmement nerveuse en période de compétition et je pense que la pause obligatoire de l'année dernière où j'ai pu me concentrer sur l'entraînement a été bénéfique. Cette saison, je veux m'assurer de garder le même sentiment et de ne pas laisser les courses venir m'affecter outre mesure. C'était une excellente façon de débuter la saison et j'espère juste continuer sur cette lancée sur mon chemin vers les Jeux olympiques."

Chez les hommes, Hwang Dae-heon de la Corée termine au premier rang alors que Semen Elistratov remporte l'argent et que Pascal Dion remporte sa deuxième médaille individuelle en carrière en Coupe du monde avec le bronze sur la distance. Dion avait remporté l’argent sur la même distance en décembre 2016 à Gangneung en Corée. "Je me sentais vraiment bien. J'avais des jambes et j'étais confiant. Je savais que je pouvais bien faire, mais je me suis vraiment surpris." 

Des habitués l'emportent sur 500m

En partie responsable de courses épiques tenues sur 500m dans les dernières années chez les femmes, la Polonaise Natalia Maliszewska a remporté les grands honneurs ce week-end sur la distance. Arianna Fontana entame ce qui pourrait être une saison historique pour elle avec une médaille d’argent sur 500m devançant Choi Min-jeong (bronze). Fontana pourrait devenir en février prochain l’athlète en courte piste la plus médaillée de tous les temps aux Olympiques. Elle est actuellement à égalité au premier rang avec Viktor Ahn et Apolo Anton Ohno avec huit médailles. 

Du côté des hommes, la Hongrie a réalisé un doublé alors que Liu Shaolin Sandor termine premier devant John-Henry Krueger. Denis Nikisha du Kazakhstan remporte le bronze. 

Aux épreuves de relais, la Chine, les Pays-Bas et la Corée montent sur le podium du 3000m féminin alors que les Pays-Bas, la Hongrie et l’Italie s’offrent les trois premières places chez les hommes sur 5000m. Le relais mixte 2000m a été remporté par la Chine qui a terminé devant les Pays-Bas et la Corée.

Les athlètes ont rendez-vous le weekend prochain à Nagoya au Japon pour la deuxième manche de Coupe du monde de la saison.

The first event of the World Cup season is in the books in short track speed skating

The first World Cup event of the 2021-22 season in short track speed skating was held this weekend in Beijing.

Uncommon scenarios on 1500m

In addition to being the first World Cup event since February 2020, the weekend's competition also served as a test event for the Beijing Olympic Games, which will be held from February 4 to 20, 2022. With Korea always dominant in the 1500m, short track fans have been accustomed to seeing Choi Min-jeong almost systematically on the podium of the distance in recent years. To open the new season, it was her compatriot Lee Yu-bin who took the honours in the distance this weekend. Canada’s Courtney Sarault (silver) and USA’s Kristen Santos (bronze) joined Lee on the podium. On the men's side, Semen Elistratov of Russia finished first ahead of Kazakhstan's Adil Galiakhmetov and China's An Kai. None of the male skaters representing Korea on the 1500m were able to reach the final.

Santos adds to her collection

In the 1000m, Suzanne Schulting from the Netherlands won her first, and surely not her last, gold medal of the season. Korea's Kim Ji-yoo finished in second place while Kristen Santos reached the podium for the second time this weekend. Later on the final day of competition, Santos also helped her team break the American record in the women's 3,000m relay by winning the B final over the distance. "I felt really good this weekend, my main goal is working to qualify as many spots for the games as possible. I get extremely nervous for races, so I think last year with no races I really thrived and benefited just being able to focus on training and I saw a lot of improvements. So this season I want to be sure to keep that same feeling and not let upcoming races affect me too much. This was a great start to the season and I’m just hoping to build on this momentum throughout the rest of the World Cup circuit and hopefully on my path to the Olympic Games."

On the men's side, Hwang Dae-heon of Korea finished first while Semen Elistratov added a silver medal to his weekend haul and Pascal Dion won his second individual World Cup medal of his career with the bronze on the distance. Dion had won silver over the same distance in December 2016 in Gangneung. "I felt really good. I had legs and I was confident. I knew I could do well but I surprised myself. The ice was great and fast." said Dion after the competition.

Known stars reach the podium on 500m

Partly responsible for epic races held over 500m in recent years, Poland's Natalia Maliszewska took top honors this weekend over the distance. Arianna Fontana begins what could be a historic season for her with a silver medal in the 500m finishing ahead of Choi Min-jeong (bronze). Fontana could become the most decorated short track athlete of all time at the Olympics next February. She is currently tied for first place with Viktor Ahn and Apolo Anton Ohno with eight medals. 

On the men's side, Hungary went for a one-two punch as Liu Shaolin Sandor finished first ahead of John-Henry Krueger. Denis Nikisha of Kazakhstan won bronze. 

In the relay events, China, the Netherlands and Korea took the podium in the women's 3000m while the Netherlands, Hungary and Italy filled the podium in the men's 5000m. The mixed 2000m relay was won by China who finished ahead of the Netherlands and Korea.

The athletes will meet next weekend in Nagoya, Japan for the second World Cup event of the season.
