Championnats canadiens juniors sur courte piste : Claudia Heeney et Nicolas Perreault grands vainqueurs

Du 15 au 17 décembre avait lieu à Calgary les Championnats canadiens juniors sur courte piste.

64 patineurs au total s’y affrontaient, dont 51 Québécois. Les quatre meilleurs hommes et les trois meilleures femmes âgés de 14 à 19 ans allaient se qualifier pour les Championnats du monde juniors sur courte piste de l’ISU. Grâce à ses résultats au niveau international senior, Courtney Sarault était pré-qualifiée pour les mondiaux juniors et c’est pour cette raison que seulement trois femmes avaient la chance de se qualifier la fin de semaine dernière. Les patineurs s’affrontaient sur les distances de 500m, 1000m et 1500m. Les résultats des deux meilleures distances de chaque patineur étaient additionnés pour déterminer le classement final.

Chez les femmes, Claudia Heeney de l’Ontario a remporté l’or au 500m et au 1000m, en plus de monter sur la troisième marche du podium au 1500m. Grâce à ses deux meilleurs résultats, elle a terminé première au classement final. Juste après elle, on retrouve Hee Won Son de l’Alberta. La patineuse a remporté l’argent au 500m et le bronze sur 1000m. Au 1500m, elle a terminé 4e. Juliette Brindamour du Québec complète le top 3 du classement final en raison de sa première place au 1500m. Lors de la finale A du 1000m, elle a terminé 5e à la suite d’une chute. C'est grâce au calcul des deux meilleurs résultats que Brindamour a terminé en 3e place au cumulatif. Au classement des trois distances, elle se retrouvait derrière Kélian Quevillon puisqu’elle avait fini 20e au 500m.

Nicolas Perreault sort du lot
Malgré une 20e place au 500m, Nicolas Perrault du Québec a remporté les grands honneurs en gagnant l’or au 1500m et au 1000m. Dans la finale A au 1000m, Perreault a fait un dépassement spectaculaire en fin de course pour terminer premier. William Dandjinou du Québec a terminé 2e au classement final. Il a remporté l’or au 500m et l’argent au 1500m. Emporté dans une chute au 1500m où il a terminé 6e, Matej Pederson d’Alberta s’est repris et est reparti avec l’argent au 500m et au 1000m, ce qui lui a permis de se hisser au 3e rang du classement final. Le quatrième rang est disputé entre Félix Pigeon et Félix Roussel. Les deux meilleurs résultats de Pigeon furent le 3e rang au 500m et le 4e rang au 1000m. De son côté, Roussel est monté sur la troisième marche du podium au 1500m et a terminé en quatrième place au 500m.

L’équipe qui représentera le Canada aux Championnats du monde juniors sur courte piste de l’ISU sera annoncée officiellement dans les prochains jours. La compétition aura lieu du 25 au 27 janvier 2019 à Montréal au Canada.

Canadian Junior Short Track Championships: Claudia Heeney and Nicolas Perreault big winners

The Canadian Junior Short Track Championships were held in Calgary from December 15th to the 17th. Here's our recap.

A total of 64 skaters faced each other, including 51 Quebecers, with the top 4 men and the 3 best women aged 14 to 19 qualifying for the ISU Junior Short Track World Championships. Thanks to her international results at the senior level, Courtney Sarault was pre-qualified and that's why only three spots were available for the women. The skaters competed in the 500m, 1000m and 1500m. The two best results out of the three distances raced by each skater were added together to determine the final standings.

On the women's side, Ontario's Claudia Heeney won gold in the 500m and 1000m and finished third in the 1500m. With her two best results, she finished first in the final standings. Right after her, was Hee Won Son from Alberta. The skater won silver in the 500m and bronze on 1000m. In the 1500m, she finished 4th. Juliette Brindamour from Quebec finished in the top 3 in the final standings because of her first place in the 1500m. In the A final of the 1000m, she finished 5th following a fall. She was able to finish in 3rd place thanks to the calculation of the two best results only. Overall, she was behind Kélian Quevillon since she finished 20th in the 500m.

Nicolas Perreault stands out

Despite a 20th place in the 500m, Nicolas Perrault of Quebec won the honors by winning gold in the 1500m. In the A final of the 1000m, Perreault made a great pass and led the last two laps to finish first. William Dandjinou of Quebec finished 2nd in the final standings. He won gold in the 500m and silver in the 1500m. Although he fell in the 1500m finishing 6th, Matej Pederson of Alberta recovered and walked away with the silver in the 500m and 1000m, which took him to 3rd place in the final standings. The fourth place is disputed between Felix Pigeon and Felix Roussel, both from Quebec. Pigeon's top two finishes are 3rd in the 500m and 4th in the 1000m. Roussel climbed on the third step of the podium in the 1500m and finished in fourth place in the 500m.

The official anouncement of who will represent Canada at the ISU World Junior Short Track Championships will be made soon. The competition will take place from January 25 to 27, 2019 in Montreal, Canada.
