Day 2 in Dresden: Kim Ji Yoo surprises Schulting - Park Ji Won dominates

The best skaters in the world are currently competing at the fifth Short Track World Cup in Dresden, Germany.

1000m - The Koreans, masters of the situation

Regulars of short track speed skating know the Korean long-distance strategy: stay in the back of the pack to keep your legs fresh and accelerate towards the end to win the race. On the men's side, this strategy paid off for the World Cup distance leader Park Ji Won, who finished first. Shaolin Sandor Liu (HUN) won the silver medal and Yoshinaga Kazuki (JPN) closed the podium. The women had to work twice as hard compared to a regular 1000m since, two laps from the end, the race was stopped after a fall from Lee Yu Bin (KOR) and Sofia Prosvirnova (RUS). The Korean was penalized and unfortunately went out on a stretcher and the Russian was also penalized. When the race resumed, Suzanne Schulting (NED), Courtney Lee Sarault (CAN) and Kim Ji Yoo (KOR) fought for first place. A hot fight between Schulting and Kim saw the Korean win the distance. Sarault managed to take second place at the very end and Schulting settled for bronze.

1500m - Some first-timers on the men's side - Boutin penalized

The public was treated with an exciting race for the men's A final. From the start, Ren Ziwei (CHN) accelerated to try to take a lap on the other skaters. The attempt narrowly failed, but his lead allowed him to win the race. Two new faces ended up on the podium. In his first career World Cup, Sven Roes (NED) used the adrenaline from his first A final to win the silver medal. Kim Dagyeom (KOR) had visited the podium in relays this season but had never won an individual medal on the circuit. This is no longer the case thanks to his bronze medal in the distance. To everyone's surprise, the 1500m overall leader in the World Cup, Lee June Seo (KOR), was disqualified following a line change in an overtaking. The women's A final was not easy either. Kim Boutin (CAN), fifth on the distance, was in a good position, but she made a bad overtaking and was penalized. Choi Min Jeong (KOR) used the Korean strategy to go for the gold. On the podium, Noh Ah Rum (KOR) was on the second step and Han Yu Tong (CHN), the distance leader, finished on the third step.

Mixed relay - First victory of the season for the Hungarians

In their first A final of the season, the Hungarians defeated the other teams to win gold. The last handover went to Shaolin Sandor Liu for Hungary and Semen Elistratov on the Russian side. The two skaters fought a close battle, but the Hungarian emerged victorious. The French followed the Russians on the podium to win the bronze medal. Unfortunately, in the middle of the race, a skater from the Netherlands fell, which cost the team a place on the podium.

1000m - Les Coréens maîtrisent la situation

Les habitués du patinage de vitesse courte piste connaissent la stratégie habituelle des Coréens lors des longues distances : rester à l’arrière du peloton pour se « garder » des jambes et accélérer vers la fin pour remporter la course. Du côté des hommes, cette stratégie a porté fruit à Park Ji Won, le meneur de la distance en Coupe du monde, qui a terminé premier. Shaolin Sandor Liu (HUN) a remporté la médaille d’argent et Yoshinaga Kazuki (JPN) a fermé le podium. Les femmes ont eu à travailler doublement plus fort qu'à l'habitude puisqu’à deux tours de la fin, la course a été arrêtée suite à des chutes de Lee Yu Bin (KOR) et Sofia Prosvirnova (RUS). Les deux patineuses ont été pénalisées et la Coréenne est malheureusement sortie sur une civière. À la reprise de la course, Suzanne Schulting (NED), Courtney Lee Sarault (CAN) et Kim Ji Yoo (KOR) se battaient pour la première place. Une chaude lutte entre Schulting et Kim a vu la Coréenne remporter la distance. Sarault a réussi à prendre la deuxième place à la toute fin et Schulting s’est contentée du bronze.

1500m – Des premières fois chez les hommes - Boutin pénalisée

Le public a eu droit à un spectacle enlevant pour la finale A chez les hommes. Dès le début de la course, Ren Ziwei (CHN) a accéléré pour tenter de prendre un tour sur le peloton. La tentative a échoué de peu, mais son avance lui a permis de gagner la course. Deux nouveaux visages sont montés sur le podium. À sa première Coupe du monde en carrière, Sven Roes (NED) a su aller puiser l’énergie de l’adrénaline de sa première finale A pour remporter la médaille d’argent. Kim Dagyeom (KOR) a goûté au podium lors des relais cette saison, mais n’avait jamais remporté de médailles individuelles. Ce n’est plus le cas grâce à sa médaille de bronze sur la distance. À la grande surprise de tous, le meneur du 1500m au classement général en Coupe du monde, Lee June Seo (KOR), a été disqualifié suite à un changement de ligne dans un dépassement. La finale A des femmes n’a pas été de tout repos non plus. Kim Boutin (CAN), cinquième sur la distance, était en bonne position, mais un mauvais dépassement lui a nuit et elle a été pénalisée. Choi Min Jeong (KOR) a utilisé la stratégie coréenne pour aller remporter l’or. Sur le podium, Noh Ah Rum (KOR) était sur la deuxième marche et Han Yu Tong (CHN), la meneuse sur la distance, a terminé troisième .

Relais mixte – Première victoire de la saison pour les Hongrois

À leur première finale A de la saison, les Hongrois ont vaincu les équipes qu'ils affrontaient. Le dernier passage de relais est allé à Shaolin Sandor Liu pour la Hongrie et Semen Elistratov pour les Russes. Les deux patineurs ont livré une bataille serrée, mais le Hongrois en est sorti vainqueur. Les Français ont suivi les Russes sur le podium pour remporter la médaille de bronze. Malheureusement, en milieu de course, un patineur des Pays-Bas a chuté, ce qui a probablement coûté une place à son équipe sur le podium.

Retour sur la saison de Coupe du monde 2018-2019 des Canadiens en patinage de vitesse courte piste.

Boutin reprend où elle avait laissé la saison dernière

Après s'être absentée lors des deux premières Coupes du monde, Kim Boutin est revenue remportant deux médailles individuelles lors de la troisième et a maintenu la cadence lors de la deuxième partie de la saison. En trois Coupes du monde, elle a remporté deux médailles d’argent au 1500m, une médaille de bronze au 500m en plus d'une médaille d’or et une médaille de bronze au 1000m. Sa coéquipière Alyson Charles a terminé 3e au classement général sur 1000m grâce à sa constance et à sa médaille d’or à Salt Lake City.

Deux médailles individuelles pour Blais - Dubois impressionne

Les efforts de Cédrik Blais ont porté fruit le 3 février alors qu’il a remporté sa première médaille individuelle en Coupe du monde : le bronze au 500m. Il est retourné sur le podium la fin de semaine suivante terminant 3e sur la même distance. Après une première médaille individuelle en novembre dernier, Steven Dubois ne s’est pas arrêté là. À Turin, il a remporté le bronze au 1000m et au 1500m. Au classement général, il a réussi à se hisser au 2e rang, derrière Kim Gun Woo de la Corée du sud, au 1500m.

De bons classements aux relais

Les hommes ont remporté la médaille d’or au relais à Dresden et l’argent à Almaty, ce qui leur a permis de terminer au 2e rang du classement général. Pour ce qui est des femmes, leurs deux médailles de bronze ont fait en sorte qu’elles terminent en 4e place à la fin de la saison. Pour la première année de la distance, l’équipe mixte de relais a terminé 3e au classement général grâce à une médaille d’or à Almaty et une médaille d’argent à Turin.

Here’s a look back at team Canada's 2018-2019 World cup season in short track speed skating.

Boutin keeps going

After missing the first two World Cups, Kim Boutin came back and won two individual medals in the third and kept that pace during the second part of the season. In three World Cups, she won two silver medals in the 1500m, one bronze in the 500m and added one gold and one bronze in the 1000m. As for the other ladies, thanks to her consistency and gold medal in Salt Lake City, Alyson Charles finished 3rd overall in the 1000m.

Two individual medals for Blais - Dubois impressive

Cédrik Blais's efforts paid off on February 3rd when he won his first individual World Cup medal, a bronze in the 500m. He returned to the podium the following weekend when he finished 3rd in the same distance. After a first individual medal last November, Steven Dubois did not stop. In Turin, he won the bronze in the 1000m and the 1500m. In the overall standings, Dubois managed to climb to second place, behind Kim Gun Woo of South Korea, in the 1500m.

Good rankings in the relays

The men won the gold medal in the relay in Dresden and the silver in Almaty, which allowed them to finish in 2nd place in the overall standings. For the women, their two bronze medals put them in 4th place at the end of the season. For the first year of the distance, the mixed relay team finished 3rd overall thanks to a gold medal in Almaty and a silver medal in Turin.

Résumé de saison courte piste 2018-2019 : Hongrie

Après une première moitié de saison fructueuse, les Hongrois ont perdu de la vitesse à la suite d'une blessure à un des membres importants de leur équipe.

Voici notre résumé de la saison remplie de hauts et de bas de l’équipe hongroise.

Plus difficile pour les frères Liu

Les frères Shaolin Liu et Shaoang Liu ont débuté la saison en force en remportant un total de cinq médailles individuelles, deux médailles d’or au relais masculin avec Csaba Burjan, Cole Krueger et Alex Varnyu, en plus d’une médaille d’or au relais mixte avec Sara Luca Bacskai et Petra Jaszapati. La deuxième partie de la saison a bien débuté avec les Championnats Européens. Shaolin Liu est monté sur la première marche du podium au 1500m, ainsi que la deuxième marche au 500m et au 1000m. Shaoang Liu a gagné l’or au 500m et l’argent au 1500m. Les deux frères ont remporté les honneurs du classement général avec Shaolin qui s’est classé premier et Shaoang au deuxième rang. La saison s’est gâtée à la quatrième Coupe du monde à Dresde en Allemagne lors de la première course de la fin de semaine de Shaoang Liu. Le patineur a fait une mauvaise chute se blessant à la main. Sa saison s’est terminée à ce moment. Shaolin Liu a remporté la médaille d’argent au 500m à la cinquième Coupe du monde à Turin en Italie. Son classement général en Coupe du monde sur la distance fut la cinquième place. Après avoir terminé en deuxième place aux Championnats du monde de 2018, les attentes étaient élevées pour le patineur. Il a obtenu une pénalité sur chacune des distances individuelles. Il a terminé vingtième au 1500m, dixième au 1000m et quatrième au 500m. Au classement général, il s’est hissé au dixième rang. De son côté, lors des Championnats du monde, Csaba Burjan a amélioré son classement par rapport à 2018 sur 1000m et 1500m. Respectivement, il s’était classé vingt-cinquième et vingt-sixième l’année dernière. Cette année, il a terminé vingtième et treizième.

Petra Jaszapati, une année de croissance

Petra Jaszapati a remporté sa première médaille en Coupe du monde lors de la première partie de la saison, soit une médaille d’or au 500m à la troisième Coupe du monde à Almaty, au Kazakhstan. Aux Championnats Européens, elle a fait la finale B sur chacune des distances où elle a terminé première de ces finales sur 1500m et 1000m et deuxième au 500m. Elle a terminé neuvième au classement général, ce qui est une amélioration par rapport à sa treizième place en 2018. Pour ce qui est des deux dernières Coupes du monde de la saison, elle a terminé septième au 1500m à Dresde et a fini deuxième de la finale B au 500m à Turin. Au classement général en Coupe du monde, elle s’est hissée au cinquième rang sur 500m, ce qui est une amélioration de six places depuis l’année dernière. Au 1500m, elle s’est classée vingtième. Aux Championnats du monde à Sofia, en Bulgarie, sa meilleure distance a été le 1000m avec une quatorzième place. En 2018, elle avait terminé vingt-et-unième au classement général. Elle s’est améliorée en grimpant au dix-huitième rang la saison dernière.

Une bonne année pour les relais

L’équipe féminine au relais a remporté sa première et unique médaille de la saison, soit le bronze, aux Championnats Européens. Lors de cette compétition, le relais masculin a terminé sur la première marche du podium. À Dresde, les hommes ont gagné la médaille d’argent, ce qui les a aidé à terminer premier rang au classement général en Coupe du monde. Aux Championnats du monde, ils ont réussi à remporter la médaille de bronze, terminant tout juste derrière les Coréens et les Chinois. Après une première année pour le relais mixte, les Hongrois ont su faire leur place sur la distance remportant l’argent à Dresde et terminant quatrième au classement général.

2018-2019 short track season recap : Hungary

After a successful first half of the season, the Hungarian team lost speed due to an injury to one of their most successful skaters.

Here is our summary of a season filled with highs and lows for the Hungarian team.

Difficulties for the Liu brothers

Brothers Shaolin and Shaoang Liu kicked off the season with a total of five individual medals, two men's relay gold with Csaba Burjan, Cole Krueger and Alex Varnyu, in addition to a gold medal in the mixed relay with Sara Luca Bacskai and Petra Jaszapati. The second part of the season started well with the European Championships. Shaolin Liu climbed on the first step of the podium in the 1500m, as well as the second step in the 500m and the 1000m. Shaoang Liu won gold in the 500m and silver in the 1500m. The two brothers won the overall ranking with Shaolin placing first and Shaoang second. Things started falling apart at the fourth World Cup in Dresden, Germany. In his first race of the weekend, Shaoang Liu suffered a bad fall injuring his hand. His season ended there. Shaolin Liu won the silver medal in the 500m at the fifth World Cup in Turin, Italy. His overall ranking on the distance in the World Cup was fifth. After finishing second at the 2018 World Championships, expectations were high for the skater. He got a penalty on each of the individual distances. He finished twentieth in the 1500m, tenth in the 1000m and fourth in the 500m. In the overall standings, he climbed to tenth place. As for Csaba Burjan, he improved his World championships' rankings compared to 2018 in both the 1000m and 1500m. Going from twenty-fifth to twentieth on 1000m and twenty-sixth to thirteenth on 1500m.

Petra Jaszapati, a year of growth

Petra Jaszapati won her first World Cup medal in the first half of the season, a gold medal in the 500m at the third World Cup in Almaty, Kazakhstan. At the European Championships, she made the B final on each of the distances. She finished ninth in the overall ranking, an improvement over her thirteenth place in 2018. For the last two World Cups of the season, she finished seventh in the 1500m in Dresden and second of the B final on 500m in Turin. In the overall World Cup ranking, she finished fifth in the 500m, an improvement of six spots compared to the previous season. In the 1500m, she placed twentieth. At the World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, her best distance was the 1000m with a fourteenth place finish. In 2018, she finished twenty-first overall. Last season, she improved by climbing to eighteenth overall.

A good year for relays

The women's relay team won its first and only bronze medal of the season at the European Championships. During this competition, the men's relay finished on the first step of the podium. In Dresden, the men won the silver medal, which helped them finish first overall in the World Cup ranking. At the World Championships, they managed to win the bronze medal, finishing just behind the Korean and Chinese teams. The Hungarians were able to offer great results on the first year of the mix relay event. They won silver in Dresden to finish fourth overall.

Torino Day 1: Maliszewska in control, several penalties on the men's side

The fifth and last leg of the World cup season started yesterday in Torino, Italy.

The best skaters in the world were trying to qualify for the individual and team distances on Friday. This weekend, medals on two 500m finals, a 1000m and a 1500m will be awarded. In addition women's, men's and mixed relays will also be raced. The day was quieter for the women than for the men and the relays had their share of action.

Schulting out of the 1000m

The women managed to have a perfect day without any disqualification. With the victory already acquired on the World cup season ranking on 1000m, Suzanne Schulting (NED) does not participate in her strongest distance this weekend. It gave way to her compatriots Rianne de Vries and Tineke den Dulk, although only the first managed to qualify for the quarterfinals. Experienced skaters such as Choi Min Jeong (KOR) and Kim Boutin (CAN), as well as rookies like Alyson Charles (CAN) also advance to the quarterfinals. The first 500m saw the fastest skaters, Natalia Maliszewska (POL), Kim Boutin and Lara van Ruijven (NED) qualify for the preliminaries. Maame Biney (USA), the best junior skater on the distance, barely qualified and was selected based on her time finishing 3rd in her race, as did Canadian team veteran Kasandra Bradette. In the second 500m, Suzanne Schulting, Lara van Ruijven, Elise Christie (GBR), Natalia Maliszewska (POL), Martina Valcepina (ITA) and Ekaterina Efremenkova (RUS) all finished first in their heat, which propelled them into the next round. As for the 1500m, each race was tight, with only a few hundredths of a second separating the first positions. Women qualified for the semifinals include Anna Seidel (GER), Choi Min Jeong, Shim Suk Hee (KOR) and Courtney Lee Sarault (CAN).

One penalty after the other on the men's side of the board

The first day of the men's competition was very hectic. In the fourth heat of the qualifying stage of the first 500m, a penalty was awarded to Denis Kikisha (KAZ) and skaters Jasper Brunsmann (NED) and Yang Shuai (CHN) were advanced. Not surprisingly, Hwang Dae Heon (KOR), Shaolin Sandor Liu (HUN) and Samuel Girard (CAN) all qualified for the quarterfinals. The latter was also successful in qualifying for the second 500m of the weekend. His compatriots Pascal Dion and Charles Hamelin, as well as Keita Watanabe (JPN), Semen Elistratov (RUS) and Kim Gun Woo (KOR) among others will also fight it out on the second 500m event. Ivan Martinic of Croatia will join them thanks to an advancement following a penalty to Jasper Brunsmann. The quarterfinals in the 1500m also had their share of action. In the fifth heat, Pascal Dion got a yellow card and Cole Krueger (HUN) and Sebastien Lepape (Fr) were advanced. In other races, Daan Breeuwsma (NED) was penalized for pushing Farrell Treacy (GBR) with his arm and Kota Kikuchi (JPN) changed line from outside to inside causing contact with Charle Cournoyer (CAN). The Japanese was penalised and the Canadian was advanced by the officials. Also skating in the quarterfinals will be Park Ji Won (KOR) who is number one on the distance this season, Shaolin Sandor Liu and Vladislav Bykanov (ISR) among other.

An unfortunate injury

The women's relay races went smoothly, without penalty. The teams participating in the semifinals will be the Koreans, French, Dutch, Kazakhs, Canadians, Japanese, Italians and Russians. After several hours of competition, everybody was hoping that the men would be done with penalties. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Hungarians and Kazakhs were penalized. The Japanese, French, Russians, Americans, Italians, Chinese, Koreans and Dutch are the teams qualified for the next round. During the mixed relay qualification, the fourth wave was resumed. A Hungarian fell and took a Frenchman with him, cutting his knee with the blade of his skate. The Frenchman came out of the ice on a stretcher. Both team were able to qualify for the quarterfinals on the rerun of the race. In this round, the French, Hungarian, British, Russian, Canadian, Dutch, Polish and American teams all managed to reach the semifinals.

Turin Jour 1 : Maliszewska en contrôle, plusieurs pénalités chez les hommes

La cinquième et dernière manche de la saison de Coupe du monde en courte piste a débuté hier à Turin en Italie.

Les meilleurs patineurs au monde tentaient de se qualifier individuellement sur deux 500m, sur 1000m et sur 1500m, en plus des relais féminins, masculins et mixtes. La journée a été plus aisée chez les femmes que chez les hommes et les relais ont emmené leur lot d’action.

Suzanne Schulting absente du 1000m

Les femmes ont réussi une journée parfaite sans aucune disqualification. Déjà assurée de terminer en tête du classement de la saison de Coupe du monde sur 1000m, Suzanne Schulting (NED) ne participe pas à sa distance de prédilection ce weekend laissant la place à ses compatriotes Rianne de Vries et Tineke den Dulk. Seulement la première a réussi à se qualifier pour les quarts de finale. Avec elle, il y aura des patineuses d’expérience tel que Choi Min Jeong (KOR) et Kim Boutin (CAN), ainsi que des recrues comme Alyson Charles (CAN). Le premier 500m a vu les patineuses les plus rapides comme Natalia Maliszewska (POL), Kim Boutin et Lara van Ruijven (NED), se qualifier lors des préliminaires. Maame Biney (USA), la meilleure patineuse junior sur cette distance, s’est qualifiée de justesse grâce à son temps terminant en 3eplace de sa course tout comme la vétéranne de l’équipe canadienne, Kasandra Bradette. Toutes ces patineuses se sont par la suite qualifiées pour les quarts de finales.  Au deuxième 500m, Suzanne Schulting, Lara van Ruijven, Elise Christie (GBR), Natalia Maliszewska (POL), Martina Valcepina (ITA) et Ekaterina Efremenkova (RUS) ont toutes terminées premières de leur vague, ce qui les a propulsé en quart de finale. Pour ce qui est du 1500m, chacune des courses ont été serrées, avec seulement quelques centièmes de secondes séparant les premières positions. Parmi les femmes qualifiées pour les demi-finales, nous retrouvons Anna Seidel (GER), Choi Min Jeong, Shim Suk Hee (KOR) et Courtney Lee Sarault (CAN).

Une pénalité n’attend pas l’autre du côté des hommes

Contrairement aux femmes, la journée de compétition chez les hommes a été très mouvementée. Dès la quatrième vague des qualifications au premier 500m, une pénalité a été donnée à Denis Kikisha (KAZ) et les patineurs Jasper Brunsmann (NED) et Yang Shuai (CHN) ont été avancés. Sans surprise, Hwang Dae Heon (KOR), Shaolin Sandor Liu (HUN) et Samuel Girard (CAN) se sont qualifiés pour les quarts de finale. Ce dernier a répété l’exploit lors des qualifications du deuxième 500m. Ses compatriotes Pascal Dion et Charles Hamelin, ainsi que Keita Watanabe (JPN), Semen Elistratov (RUS) et Kim Gun Woo (KOR) entre autre seront également de la partie sur le 500m (2). Ivan Martinic de Croatie les rejoindra grâce à un avancement suite à la pénalité décernée à Jasper Brunsmann. Les quarts de finale au 1500m n’ont pas été exemptés de rebondissements. Dans la cinquième vague, Pascal Dion a obtenu un carton jaune et Cole Krueger (HUN) et Sébastien Lepape (Fr) ont été avancés. Daan Breeuwsma (NED) a été pénalisé pour avoir poussé Farrell Treacy (GBR) avec son bras alors que dans la course suivante, Kota Kikuchi (JPN) a changé de ligne de l’extérieur vers l’intérieur, causant un contact avec Charle Cournoyer (CAN). Le Japonais a été disqualifié et le Canadien a été avancé. Le rejoignant lors des quarts de finale, on retrouve Park Ji Won (KOR) qui est le meneur cette saison sur la distance, Shaolin Sandor Liu et Vladislav Bykanov entre autres.

Une malencontreuse blessure

Les courses du relais féminin se sont déroulées rondement, sans pénalité. Les équipes coréenne, française, néerlandaise, kazakh, canadienne, japonaise, italienne et russe avancent en demi-finale. Après plusieurs heures de compétition, tout le monde souhaitait que tout se déroulerait rondement du côté des hommes. Malheureusement, ça n’a pas été le cas. Les Hongrois et les Kazakhs ont été pénalisés. Les Japonais, les Français, les Russes, les Américains, les Italiens, les Chinois, les Coréens et les Néerlandais se sont qualifiés pour la ronde suivante. Lors des qualifications au relais mixte, la quatrième vague a été reprise. Un Hongrois a chuté et a emporté un Français dans sa course, lui coupant le genou avec la lame de son patin. Le Français est sorti de la glace sur une civière. Les deux équipes ont tout de même réussi à avancer en quarts de finale après la reprise de la course. Lors de la ronde suivante, les Français, les Hongrois, les Britanniques, les Russes, les Canadiens, les Néerlandais, les Polonais et les Américains ont réussi à mériter leur place en demi-finale.
