Une dernière journée remplie d'émotions à Dordrecht

C’est dans une ambiance survoltée qu’a pris fin la saison 2019-2020 de Coupe du monde en patinage de vitesse courte piste à Dordrecht aux Pays-Bas et la foule a pu profité d’un spectacle de grande qualité malgré les nombreux absents.

Les absents ont toujours torts. Aujourd’hui, les absents ont manqué l’une des plus excitantes journées de Coupe du monde de la saison. Le public était présent et bruyant au Optisport Sportboulevard Dordrechtet et il a eu droit à de beaux moments autant au niveau des résultats de ses favoris que des performances des athlètes des autres nations présentes. Je pourrais vous faire un résumé sans émotions, mais j’ai pris conscience une fois de plus aujourd'hui à quel point j’aime ce sport. Je me promet de revenir sur les grands noms qui étaient absents ce weekend, mais pour le moment je veux me concentrer sur ceux qui ont tout donné. 

Un cadeau pour la foule sur 500m

Sur 500m chez les femmes, il aurait été difficile d’offrir un meilleur spectacle aux amateurs présents à Dordrecht alors que deux de leurs favorites, Lara van Ruijven et Yara van Kerkhof, étaient en grande finale et allaient devoir affronter la Chinoise Qu Chunyu, la Polonaise Kamila Stormowska et la Britannique Elise Christie. Revoir Christie, championne du monde 2017, en finale A lors de cette dernière manche de Coupe du monde après une longue traversée du désert, ne peut que réjouir les amateurs d’émotions fortes. Finalement, les Néerlandaises terminent première (van Ruijven)  et deuxième (van Kerkhof) au grand plaisir de la foule. La jeune Polonaise de 19 ans remporte sa première médaille en Coupe du monde et Elise Christie démontre de belles choses malgré sa pénalité. Pour elle, une présence en finale principale aujourd'hui était une victoire en soi. Chez les hommes, Lee June Seo remporte l’or terminant devant Stijn Desmet (argent) et Abzal Azhgaliyev (bronze). 

Trois médailles sur les six disponibles au 1000m repartent en Corée

Sur le deuxième 1000m de la fin de semaine, la Coréenne Kim Ji Yoo l’a emporté devant la Chinoise Han Yu Tong et la Russe Sofia Prosvirnova. Victime d’une chute en demi-finale, Suzanne Schulting a dû se contenter d’une victoire en finale B, mais elle termine tout de même première au classement général de la saison sur la distance. Chez les hommes, Park Ji Won remporte sa deuxième médaille d’or de la compétition avec sa victoire sur 1000m. Son compatriote Kim Dong Wook met la main sur l’argent alors que le Canadien Steven Dubois repart avec le bronze. 

Le niveau d'énergie atteint son apogée lors des relais

Au relais 3000m chez les femmes, les Néerlandaises ont gâté leurs partisans avec une victoire leur conférant le premier rang au classement final de la saison 2019-2020. Les Néerlandaises ont connu une progression constante durant la saison et peu d’équipe autant du côté des femmes que des hommes peuvent se vanter d’avoir une telle cohésion sur la glace. Les Canadiennes ont terminé en deuxième place alors que les Coréennes remportent le bronze.

Du côté des hommes, ils auront clos cette saison de Coupe du monde avec une bataille endiablée entre les Pays-Bas, le Canada, la Chine et la Corée au relais. Le Canada met finalement la main sur la médaille d’or remportant l’épreuve par trois centièmes de seconde devant les Pays-Bas. Une fin de course exaltante et une épreuve qui nous aura permis de revoir Sjinkie Knegt sur un podium après une solide performance pour aider son équipe aujourd'hui. Sur une note personnelle, j’ai été touché de voir le Champion du monde 2018 Charles Hamelin aller faire l’accolade au Champion du monde 2015 Knegt dans un geste qui semblait saluer le retour de la star Néerlandaise après que des blessures importantes l’aient gardé loin de la glace pendant un longue période. La Chine remporte la médaille de bronze alors que la Corée a été pénalisée lors de la finale. 

Les athlètes ont maintenant un mois pour se préparer en vue de la dernière compétition internationale de la saison soit les Championnats du monde qui auront lieu à Séoul en mars.

A last day filled with emotions in Dordrecht

The 2019-2020 World Cup season in short track speed skating ended in a lively atmosphere in Dordrecht and the crowd enjoyed a great show despite the many absentees.

He who is absent is always in the wrong. Today the absentees missed one of the most exciting day of the World Cup season. The crowd was loud at the Optisport Sportboulevard Dordrechtet and was served amazing performances by their favorites and witnessed emotional moments linked to athletes from other countries. I could give you an emotionless summary of the results, but I realized once again today how much I love this sport. I promise to share my opinions soon about the numerous no-shows of the weekend, but today I want to focus on those who gave their all. 

A crowd pleaser result on 500m

In the women's 500m it would have been difficult to offer a better show to the Dutch fans. Two of their favourites, Lara van Ruijven and Yara van Kerkhof, were in the main final and had to face China's Qu Chunyu, Poland's Kamila Stormowska and Great Britain's Elise Christie. To see Christie, the 2017 World Champion, in the big final in this last World Cup event of the season after a long walk through the desert that started in 2018, was amazing. In the end, the Dutch finished first (van Ruijven) and second (van Kerkhof) to the delight of the crowd. The 19-year-old Polish won her first World Cup medal and Elise Christie showed great things despite her penalty. For her, a presence in the main final today was a victory in itself. On the men's side, Lee June Seo won gold, finishing ahead of Stijn Desmet (silver) and Abzal Azhgaliyev (bronze). 

Three out of six possible medals for Korea on 1000m

In the second 1000m of the weekend, Korea's Kim Ji Yoo won finishing ahead of China's Han Yu Tong and Russia's Sofia Prosvirnova. Suzanne Schulting, who fell in the semifinal, had to settle for a win in the B final, but still finished first overall in the distance's season ranking. On the men's side, Park Ji Won won his second gold medal of the competition with his victory in the 1000m. His compatriot Kim Dong Wook won silver while Canada's Steven Dubois took home bronze. 

The energy level reached it's apogee in the relays

In the women's 3000m relay, the Dutch lifted their supporters with a victory that placed them first in the final standings for the 2019-2020 season. The Dutch women have been steadily progressing throughout the season and few teams on both the women's and men's side show that level of cohesion on the ice. The Canadians finished second while the Koreans took the bronze.

The men's ended the World Cup season with a fierce battle between the Netherlands, Canada, China and Korea in the relay. Canada finally won the gold medal by three hundredths of a second over the Netherlands. An exhilarating end to the race in a relay that saw Sjinkie Knegt back on the podium after a solid performance to help his team today. On a personal note, I was touched to see 2018 World Champion Charles Hamelin exchange a few words with 2015 World Champion Knegt and give him a tap on the back in a gesture that seemed to welcome the return of the Dutch star after major injuries kept him off the ice for a long time. China took the bronze medal while Korea was penalized in the final. 

Athletes now have a month to prepare for the last international competition of the season, the World Championships that will be held in Seoul in March.

Dresde Jour 3: Le Canada en or sur 500m

Le Canada a connu une bonne journée au boulot en Allemagne lors de la dernière journée de compétition de la cinquième manche de la saison de Coupe du monde en patinage de vitesse courte piste.

Encore Boutin

La saison de Kim Boutin sur 500m est jusqu’à présent parfaite. En plus d’avoir abaissé le record du monde plus tôt cette saison, la Sherbrookoise a remporté ce weekend une cinquième médaille d’or sur la distance en autant de visite en grande finale. C’est la Chinoise Qu Chunyu qui a remporté la médaille d’argent alors que la Néerlandaise et championne du monde en titre sur la distance Lara van Ruijven repart avec le bronze.

Du côté des hommes, le Canadien Cédrik Blais a réussi à se qualifier pour la grande finale avec une excellente performance en demi-finale éliminant même le recordman mondial Wu Dajing. C’est toutefois son coéquipier Steven Dubois qui a eu le dessus en grande finale remportant l’épreuve devant le Hongrois Liu Shaolin Sandor et le jeune Néerlandais Melle van ‘T Wout.  Constamment en progression depuis une décennie, les Pays-Bas ont pu compter sur de bonnes performances de leur relève ce weekend en Allemagne. 

Des changements aux classements sur 1500m

Sur 1500m, Suzanne Schulting a remporté une finale un peu brouillon pour se mériter l’or sur sa distance de prédilection. Cette victoire combinée à la 6e place de  la Chinoise Han Yu Tong permet à Schulting de passer au premier rang du classement de la Coupe du monde, quelques dizaines de points devant la Chinoise. La Russe Sofia Prosvirnova (argent) et la Française Tifany Huot Marchand (bronze) ont accompagné Schulting sur le podium. La Canadienne Danaé Blais a remporté la finale B.

Du côté des hommes, comme ce fut le cas chez les femmes, une victoire combinée à une contre-performance aura changé le classement de la saison avec une compétition à faire. Le Coréen Park Ji Won est maintenant en tête suite à sa victoire aujourd'hui alors que son coéquipier Lee June Seo glisse au 2e rang suite à sa pénalité en grande finale. Le Chinois An Kai qui était au 2e rang du classement et qui avait réussi à se qualifier pour les deux séries de 1500m ce weekend glisse au 3e rang suite à son élimination en demi-finale ce dimanche. Le Russe Semen Elistratov (argent)  et le Hongrois John Henry Krueger (bronze) complète le podium sur la distance.

Les Néerlandaises et les Coréens s'offrent une première victoire au relais

Du côté des relais, les Néerlandaises ont remporté leur première médaille d’or de la saison en Coupe du monde terminant devant les Chinoise, présentement en tête du classement général. La médaille de bronze est allée aux Japonaises. Chez les hommes ce sont les Coréens qui ont mis la main sur leur première médaille d’or de la saison sur le circuit eux qui avaient jusqu'ici terminé 2e à trois reprises et 3e à une occasion. Les Russes ont terminé au 2e rang aujourd'hui et sont toujours en tête du classement saisonnier avec une compétition à faire. Les Néerlandais ont remporté le bronze, leur meilleur résultat de la saison. 

La saison de Coupe du monde 2019-2020 se termine la semaine prochaine à Dordrecht aux Pays-Bas

Dresden Day 3: Canada captures double gold on 500m

Canada had a good day at work in Germany on the final day of competition of the fifth leg of the World Cup season in short track speed skating.

Boutin once again

Kim Boutin's season in the 500m is so far perfect. In addition to having lowered the world record last fall, the Sherbrooke native won her fifth gold medal over the distance in as many visits to the grand final this season. China's Qu Chunyu took the silver medal, while the reigning world champion on the distance, Netherlands' Lara van Ruijven, won the bronze medal. 

On the men's side, Canada's Cedrik Blais managed to qualify for the grand final with an excellent performance in the semifinal eliminating even world record holder Wu Dajing. However, it was his teammate Steven Dubois who had the upper hand in the grand final, winning the event ahead of Hungary's Liu Shaolin Sandor and the young Dutchman Melle van 'T Wout.  Constantly progressing over the last decade, the Dutch team's next wave of athletes showed great things this weekend in Germany. 

Some movement in the World cup rankings on 1500m
On 1500m, Suzanne Schulting won a somewhat messy final to win gold in her favourite distance. This victory combined with the 6th place of China's Han Yu Tong allowed Schulting to move up to the top of the World Cup rankings, a few dozen points ahead of the Chinese. Russia's Sofia Prosvirnova (silver) and France's Tifany Huot Marchand (bronze) accompanied Schulting on the podium. Canada's Danaé Blais won the B final. 


On the men's side, as it was the case for the women, a victory combined with a counter performance changed the season rankings with one competition to go. Korea's Park Ji Won is now in the lead following his victory while his teammate Lee June Seo slides to second place following a penalty in today's grand final. China's An Kai who was ranked 2nd in the standings and who had qualified for both 1500m heats this weekend slipped to 3rd place following his elimination in the semifinals today. Russia's Semen Elistratov (silver) and Hungary's John Henry Krueger (bronze) completed the podium in today's event.

Netherlands and Korea breath a sigh of relief in the relays

On the relay, the Dutch ladies won their first World Cup gold medal of the season, finishing ahead of the Chinese, who currently lead the overall standings. The bronze medal went to the Japanese. On the men's side, the Koreans won their first gold medal of the season on the circuit, having finished second three times and third on one occasion. The Russians finished second today and are still leading the season standings with one competition to go. The Dutch won bronze today, their best result of the season.

Day 2 in Dresden: Kim Ji Yoo surprises Schulting - Park Ji Won dominates

The best skaters in the world are currently competing at the fifth Short Track World Cup in Dresden, Germany.

1000m - The Koreans, masters of the situation

Regulars of short track speed skating know the Korean long-distance strategy: stay in the back of the pack to keep your legs fresh and accelerate towards the end to win the race. On the men's side, this strategy paid off for the World Cup distance leader Park Ji Won, who finished first. Shaolin Sandor Liu (HUN) won the silver medal and Yoshinaga Kazuki (JPN) closed the podium. The women had to work twice as hard compared to a regular 1000m since, two laps from the end, the race was stopped after a fall from Lee Yu Bin (KOR) and Sofia Prosvirnova (RUS). The Korean was penalized and unfortunately went out on a stretcher and the Russian was also penalized. When the race resumed, Suzanne Schulting (NED), Courtney Lee Sarault (CAN) and Kim Ji Yoo (KOR) fought for first place. A hot fight between Schulting and Kim saw the Korean win the distance. Sarault managed to take second place at the very end and Schulting settled for bronze.

1500m - Some first-timers on the men's side - Boutin penalized

The public was treated with an exciting race for the men's A final. From the start, Ren Ziwei (CHN) accelerated to try to take a lap on the other skaters. The attempt narrowly failed, but his lead allowed him to win the race. Two new faces ended up on the podium. In his first career World Cup, Sven Roes (NED) used the adrenaline from his first A final to win the silver medal. Kim Dagyeom (KOR) had visited the podium in relays this season but had never won an individual medal on the circuit. This is no longer the case thanks to his bronze medal in the distance. To everyone's surprise, the 1500m overall leader in the World Cup, Lee June Seo (KOR), was disqualified following a line change in an overtaking. The women's A final was not easy either. Kim Boutin (CAN), fifth on the distance, was in a good position, but she made a bad overtaking and was penalized. Choi Min Jeong (KOR) used the Korean strategy to go for the gold. On the podium, Noh Ah Rum (KOR) was on the second step and Han Yu Tong (CHN), the distance leader, finished on the third step.

Mixed relay - First victory of the season for the Hungarians

In their first A final of the season, the Hungarians defeated the other teams to win gold. The last handover went to Shaolin Sandor Liu for Hungary and Semen Elistratov on the Russian side. The two skaters fought a close battle, but the Hungarian emerged victorious. The French followed the Russians on the podium to win the bronze medal. Unfortunately, in the middle of the race, a skater from the Netherlands fell, which cost the team a place on the podium.

Jour 2 à Dresde: Kim Ji Yoo surprend Schulting – Park Ji Won domine

Les meilleurs patineurs du monde s’affrontent présentement à la cinquième Coupe du monde de courte piste qui a lieu à Dresde en Allemagne.

1000m - Les Coréens maîtrisent la situation

Les habitués du patinage de vitesse courte piste connaissent la stratégie habituelle des Coréens lors des longues distances : rester à l’arrière du peloton pour se « garder » des jambes et accélérer vers la fin pour remporter la course. Du côté des hommes, cette stratégie a porté fruit à Park Ji Won, le meneur de la distance en Coupe du monde, qui a terminé premier. Shaolin Sandor Liu (HUN) a remporté la médaille d’argent et Yoshinaga Kazuki (JPN) a fermé le podium. Les femmes ont eu à travailler doublement plus fort qu'à l'habitude puisqu’à deux tours de la fin, la course a été arrêtée suite à des chutes de Lee Yu Bin (KOR) et Sofia Prosvirnova (RUS). Les deux patineuses ont été pénalisées et la Coréenne est malheureusement sortie sur une civière. À la reprise de la course, Suzanne Schulting (NED), Courtney Lee Sarault (CAN) et Kim Ji Yoo (KOR) se battaient pour la première place. Une chaude lutte entre Schulting et Kim a vu la Coréenne remporter la distance. Sarault a réussi à prendre la deuxième place à la toute fin et Schulting s’est contentée du bronze.

1500m – Des premières fois chez les hommes - Boutin pénalisée

Le public a eu droit à un spectacle enlevant pour la finale A chez les hommes. Dès le début de la course, Ren Ziwei (CHN) a accéléré pour tenter de prendre un tour sur le peloton. La tentative a échoué de peu, mais son avance lui a permis de gagner la course. Deux nouveaux visages sont montés sur le podium. À sa première Coupe du monde en carrière, Sven Roes (NED) a su aller puiser l’énergie de l’adrénaline de sa première finale A pour remporter la médaille d’argent. Kim Dagyeom (KOR) a goûté au podium lors des relais cette saison, mais n’avait jamais remporté de médailles individuelles. Ce n’est plus le cas grâce à sa médaille de bronze sur la distance. À la grande surprise de tous, le meneur du 1500m au classement général en Coupe du monde, Lee June Seo (KOR), a été disqualifié suite à un changement de ligne dans un dépassement. La finale A des femmes n’a pas été de tout repos non plus. Kim Boutin (CAN), cinquième sur la distance, était en bonne position, mais un mauvais dépassement lui a nuit et elle a été pénalisée. Choi Min Jeong (KOR) a utilisé la stratégie coréenne pour aller remporter l’or. Sur le podium, Noh Ah Rum (KOR) était sur la deuxième marche et Han Yu Tong (CHN), la meneuse sur la distance, a terminé troisième .

Relais mixte – Première victoire de la saison pour les Hongrois

À leur première finale A de la saison, les Hongrois ont vaincu les équipes qu'ils affrontaient. Le dernier passage de relais est allé à Shaolin Sandor Liu pour la Hongrie et Semen Elistratov pour les Russes. Les deux patineurs ont livré une bataille serrée, mais le Hongrois en est sorti vainqueur. Les Français ont suivi les Russes sur le podium pour remporter la médaille de bronze. Malheureusement, en milieu de course, un patineur des Pays-Bas a chuté, ce qui a probablement coûté une place à son équipe sur le podium.

A look back at Universiade 2019 : Aurélie Monvoisin gets three medals for France

Many elite short track speed skaters from all over the world were in action this week at the 2019 Universiade and France's Aurélie Monvoisin offered great performances.

Krasnoyarsk, Russia is presently hosting the 2019 Universiade. Although the event will end on March 12, the short track speed skating competition is now over. Despite being known as a powerhouse of the sport, Canada didn't send any athlete to this major competition.  

Three individual medals for Aurélie Monvoisin

The French athlete had to battle against fierce competitors this week. Big names such as Korea's Kim A Lang and Russia's Sofia Prosvirnova and Ekaterina Efremenkova were also in action in Krasnoyarsk. With the competition being held at home, Prosvirnova and Efrememkova had more pressure on their shoulders. By looking at the results, it's pretty clear that Monvoisin was not intimidated. The 21-year-old athlete left the competition after winning a gold medal on 500m and silver medals on 1500m and 1000m.

Korea's Kim A Lang also had a good week winning gold on 1500m and 1000m while Russia's Ekaterina Efremenkova won two bronze medals and a silver.

In the 3000m relay event, Russian fans had reasons to celebrate as their favorite team won the gold finishing ahead of Japan and Kazakhstan.

Some surprises on the men's side

While Koreans are known to be a dominant force on 1500m, it's in the 1000m that three of them gathered on the podium at the 2019 Universiade. Hong Kyung Hwan won the gold while Lim Yong Jin won silver and Park Ji Won finished third winning the bronze medal. Ironically, no Korean climbed on the podium on 1500m. The distance was won by China's An Kai who was joined on the podium by Quentin Fercoq (silver) from France and Kiichi Shigehiro (bronze) from Japan. The victory on 500m will be added to the resume of Park Ji Won. His compatriot Lim Yong Jin goes home with the silver medal while Russia's Konstantin Ivliev won the bronze.

In the 5000m relay event, Korea finishes ahead of Russia and Kazakhstan in that order to win the gold medal.

Some of the athletes that battled on the ice this week in Russia are already back in action in Sofia, Bulgaria at the ISU World championships.

Retour sur l'Universiade 2019: Aurélie Monvoisin remporte trois médailles pour la France

Plusieurs athlètes de haut niveau en courte piste provenant d'un peu partout dans le monde étaient en action cette semaine à l'Universiade 2019. La Française Aurélie Monvoisin a offert de belles performances.

C'est à Krasnoyarsk en Russie que se tient présentement l'Universiade d'hiver 2019. Si certaines des épreuves sportives se terminent le 12 mars, les compétitions en patinage de vitesse courte piste sont maintenant chose du passé. Malgré le fait qu'il fasse partie des puissances de ce sport, le Canada n'avait pas de représentant à cette compétition majeure. 

Aurélie Monvoisin, de tous les podiums individuels

La Française a dû se frotter à une forte opposition cette semaine. De gros noms comme la Coréenne Kim A Lang et les Russes Sofia Prosvirnova et Ekaterina Efremenkova étaient en action. Comme les compétitions avaient lieu chez elles, Prosvirnova et Efremenkova avaient définitivement le couteau entre les dents. Si on se fie aux résultats finaux de Monvoisin, il est évident que cette dernière n'a pas été intimidée outre mesure. En plus de remporter des médailles d'argent sur 1500m et 1000m, l'athlète de 21 ans a remporté les grands honneurs sur 500m.

La Coréenne Kim A Lang a également bien fait remportant la victoire sur 1500m et 1000m. Ekaterina Efremenkova a quant à elle remporté deux médailles de bronze et une d'argent.

Du côté du relais 3000m, l'équipe russe a ravi les amateurs locaux avec une victoire, terminant devant le Japon et le Kazakhstan.

Des résultats un peu plus diversifiés chez les hommes

Si les Coréens sont reconnus pour leur grande force sur 1500m, c'est plutôt sur 1000m qu'ils se sont offert un triplé cette semaine en Russie alors que Hong Kyung Hwan, Lim Yong Jin et Park Ji Won ont terminé dans cette ordre sur la distance. Aucun Coréen n'est monté sur le podium sur 1500m alors que le Chinois An Kai a remporté l'or, le Français Quentin Fercoq l'argent et le Japonais Kiichi Shigehiro le bronze. La victoire sur 500m est allée à Park Ji Won. Son compatriote Lim Yong Jin remporte la médaille d'argent alors que le Russe Konstantin Ivliev repart avec la médaille de bronze.

Au relais 5000m, c'est la Corée qui l'a emporté. Les patineurs russes ont terminé au deuxième rang alors que le Kazakhstan a terminé troisième.

Certains des athlètes présents cette semaine à l'Universiade participent aux Championnats du monde ce weekend à Sofia en Bulgarie.
