Une dernière journée remplie d'émotions à Dordrecht

C’est dans une ambiance survoltée qu’a pris fin la saison 2019-2020 de Coupe du monde en patinage de vitesse courte piste à Dordrecht aux Pays-Bas et la foule a pu profité d’un spectacle de grande qualité malgré les nombreux absents.

Les absents ont toujours torts. Aujourd’hui, les absents ont manqué l’une des plus excitantes journées de Coupe du monde de la saison. Le public était présent et bruyant au Optisport Sportboulevard Dordrechtet et il a eu droit à de beaux moments autant au niveau des résultats de ses favoris que des performances des athlètes des autres nations présentes. Je pourrais vous faire un résumé sans émotions, mais j’ai pris conscience une fois de plus aujourd'hui à quel point j’aime ce sport. Je me promet de revenir sur les grands noms qui étaient absents ce weekend, mais pour le moment je veux me concentrer sur ceux qui ont tout donné. 

Un cadeau pour la foule sur 500m

Sur 500m chez les femmes, il aurait été difficile d’offrir un meilleur spectacle aux amateurs présents à Dordrecht alors que deux de leurs favorites, Lara van Ruijven et Yara van Kerkhof, étaient en grande finale et allaient devoir affronter la Chinoise Qu Chunyu, la Polonaise Kamila Stormowska et la Britannique Elise Christie. Revoir Christie, championne du monde 2017, en finale A lors de cette dernière manche de Coupe du monde après une longue traversée du désert, ne peut que réjouir les amateurs d’émotions fortes. Finalement, les Néerlandaises terminent première (van Ruijven)  et deuxième (van Kerkhof) au grand plaisir de la foule. La jeune Polonaise de 19 ans remporte sa première médaille en Coupe du monde et Elise Christie démontre de belles choses malgré sa pénalité. Pour elle, une présence en finale principale aujourd'hui était une victoire en soi. Chez les hommes, Lee June Seo remporte l’or terminant devant Stijn Desmet (argent) et Abzal Azhgaliyev (bronze). 

Trois médailles sur les six disponibles au 1000m repartent en Corée

Sur le deuxième 1000m de la fin de semaine, la Coréenne Kim Ji Yoo l’a emporté devant la Chinoise Han Yu Tong et la Russe Sofia Prosvirnova. Victime d’une chute en demi-finale, Suzanne Schulting a dû se contenter d’une victoire en finale B, mais elle termine tout de même première au classement général de la saison sur la distance. Chez les hommes, Park Ji Won remporte sa deuxième médaille d’or de la compétition avec sa victoire sur 1000m. Son compatriote Kim Dong Wook met la main sur l’argent alors que le Canadien Steven Dubois repart avec le bronze. 

Le niveau d'énergie atteint son apogée lors des relais

Au relais 3000m chez les femmes, les Néerlandaises ont gâté leurs partisans avec une victoire leur conférant le premier rang au classement final de la saison 2019-2020. Les Néerlandaises ont connu une progression constante durant la saison et peu d’équipe autant du côté des femmes que des hommes peuvent se vanter d’avoir une telle cohésion sur la glace. Les Canadiennes ont terminé en deuxième place alors que les Coréennes remportent le bronze.

Du côté des hommes, ils auront clos cette saison de Coupe du monde avec une bataille endiablée entre les Pays-Bas, le Canada, la Chine et la Corée au relais. Le Canada met finalement la main sur la médaille d’or remportant l’épreuve par trois centièmes de seconde devant les Pays-Bas. Une fin de course exaltante et une épreuve qui nous aura permis de revoir Sjinkie Knegt sur un podium après une solide performance pour aider son équipe aujourd'hui. Sur une note personnelle, j’ai été touché de voir le Champion du monde 2018 Charles Hamelin aller faire l’accolade au Champion du monde 2015 Knegt dans un geste qui semblait saluer le retour de la star Néerlandaise après que des blessures importantes l’aient gardé loin de la glace pendant un longue période. La Chine remporte la médaille de bronze alors que la Corée a été pénalisée lors de la finale. 

Les athlètes ont maintenant un mois pour se préparer en vue de la dernière compétition internationale de la saison soit les Championnats du monde qui auront lieu à Séoul en mars.

A last day filled with emotions in Dordrecht

The 2019-2020 World Cup season in short track speed skating ended in a lively atmosphere in Dordrecht and the crowd enjoyed a great show despite the many absentees.

He who is absent is always in the wrong. Today the absentees missed one of the most exciting day of the World Cup season. The crowd was loud at the Optisport Sportboulevard Dordrechtet and was served amazing performances by their favorites and witnessed emotional moments linked to athletes from other countries. I could give you an emotionless summary of the results, but I realized once again today how much I love this sport. I promise to share my opinions soon about the numerous no-shows of the weekend, but today I want to focus on those who gave their all. 

A crowd pleaser result on 500m

In the women's 500m it would have been difficult to offer a better show to the Dutch fans. Two of their favourites, Lara van Ruijven and Yara van Kerkhof, were in the main final and had to face China's Qu Chunyu, Poland's Kamila Stormowska and Great Britain's Elise Christie. To see Christie, the 2017 World Champion, in the big final in this last World Cup event of the season after a long walk through the desert that started in 2018, was amazing. In the end, the Dutch finished first (van Ruijven) and second (van Kerkhof) to the delight of the crowd. The 19-year-old Polish won her first World Cup medal and Elise Christie showed great things despite her penalty. For her, a presence in the main final today was a victory in itself. On the men's side, Lee June Seo won gold, finishing ahead of Stijn Desmet (silver) and Abzal Azhgaliyev (bronze). 

Three out of six possible medals for Korea on 1000m

In the second 1000m of the weekend, Korea's Kim Ji Yoo won finishing ahead of China's Han Yu Tong and Russia's Sofia Prosvirnova. Suzanne Schulting, who fell in the semifinal, had to settle for a win in the B final, but still finished first overall in the distance's season ranking. On the men's side, Park Ji Won won his second gold medal of the competition with his victory in the 1000m. His compatriot Kim Dong Wook won silver while Canada's Steven Dubois took home bronze. 

The energy level reached it's apogee in the relays

In the women's 3000m relay, the Dutch lifted their supporters with a victory that placed them first in the final standings for the 2019-2020 season. The Dutch women have been steadily progressing throughout the season and few teams on both the women's and men's side show that level of cohesion on the ice. The Canadians finished second while the Koreans took the bronze.

The men's ended the World Cup season with a fierce battle between the Netherlands, Canada, China and Korea in the relay. Canada finally won the gold medal by three hundredths of a second over the Netherlands. An exhilarating end to the race in a relay that saw Sjinkie Knegt back on the podium after a solid performance to help his team today. On a personal note, I was touched to see 2018 World Champion Charles Hamelin exchange a few words with 2015 World Champion Knegt and give him a tap on the back in a gesture that seemed to welcome the return of the Dutch star after major injuries kept him off the ice for a long time. China took the bronze medal while Korea was penalized in the final. 

Athletes now have a month to prepare for the last international competition of the season, the World Championships that will be held in Seoul in March.

Dubois stumbles on 1000m

On 1000m, nothing to declare on the women’s side other than the fact that USA’s Maame Biney will have to go through the repêchage if she wants to compete on the distance this weekend. All the favorites on the men’s side went through except Canada’s Steven Dubois. His teammate Jordan Pierre-Gilles was advanced after being part of one of the only two races on the distance that saw some skaters being penalised (Kruzbergs and Shamukhanov in one and Navarro in the other).

Christie will need the repêchage

On 500m, Elise Christie who hasn’t skate a lot this season due to injuries and health issues will have to go through the repêchage if she wants to take part in the medal rounds during the weekend. On the men’s side, China’s Ren Ziwei will be the biggest absent in the sprint distance. He was penalised in the heat round. His teammate Sun Long, who just won a bronze medal on the distance at the World junior championships, the Australian Andy Jung and Russia’s Pavel Sitnikov also saw their competition on 500m being cut short by penalties. 

A strong showing on 1500m

This weekend’s competition offers two occasions of winning medals on 1500m. Not much to report on either of the two qualification rounds on the women’s side other than the fact that some skaters like Hungary’s Deanna Lockett, Canada’s Danaé Blais and Belgium’s Hanne Desmet were able to qualify for the main event on both. On the men’s side, the actual leader of the World cup circuit on the distance, Korea’s Lee June Seo, qualified on one of the two while his biggest rival this season, China’s An Kai, was able to qualify in both. A situation that could have a big impact on the final ranking of the season.

Préparez-vous à tout un spectacle ce weekend à Dresden

Après une pause pour la période des fêtes, les Championnats  des quatre continents, les Championnats Européens et les Championnats du monde junior, les meilleurs patineurs de courte piste reprennent maintenant leur saison de Coupe du monde 2019-2020 avec la cinquième manche se tenant ce weekend en Allemagne.

Dubois trébuche

Peu de rebondissements sur 1000m chez les femmes outre le fait que l’Américaine Maame Biney devra passer par le repêchage si elle veut participer au tableau principal sur la distance ce weekend. À part le Canadien Steven Dubois, tous les gros noms du circuit passent directement au tableau principal sur 1000m. Le coéquipier de Dubois, le Sherbrookois Jordan Pierre-Gilles, a été avancé à la ronde suivante à la suite de l’une des deux seules courses où des pénalités ont été décernées. Kruzbergs et Shamukhanov ont été pénalisés dans la vague de Pierre-Gilles alors que le chemin de Tristan Navarro s’est également arrêté aujourd'hui suite à une pénalité.

Un chemin plus sinueux pour Christie

Sur 500m, la Britannique Elise Christie qui a peu patiné cette saison dû à des blessures et à des ennuis de santé, devra passer par le repêchage si elle veut participer au grand show sur 500m. Du côté des hommes, le Chinois Ren Ziwei sera absent du programme principal ayant été pénalisé aujourd'hui. Son compatriote Sun Long qui vient de remporter une médaille de bronze sur la distance aux Championnats du monde junior a également été pénalisé tout comme le Russe Pavel Sitnikov et l’Australien Andy Jung. 

Le vent pourrait tourner au classement du 1500m

La compétition du weekend offre deux possibilités de médaille sur 1500m. Nous avons eu droit à des vagues de qualification plutôt tranquilles du côté des femmes, mais notons tout de même que certaines patineuses dont la Hongroise Deanna Lockett, la Canadienne Danaé Blais et la Belge Hanne Desmet ont réussi à se qualifier pour les deux séries de courses sur 1500m. Chez les hommes le meneur au classement actuel de la saison de Coupe du monde, le Coréen Lee June Seo, a réussi à sa qualifier pour l’un des deux 1500m alors que son plus proche poursuivant au classement le Chinois An Kai est arrivé à le faire sur les deux. Cette situation pourrait avoir un impact majeur sur le classement général de la saison qui se terminera le weekend prochain aux Pays-Bas.

Boutin et Sarault sur le podium encore une fois ce weekend

Comme elles l’avaient fait le weekend dernier à Nagoya, les Canadiennes Kim Boutin et Courtney Sarault sont montées sur le podium à Shanghai aujourd’hui.

Qui d'autre que Kim Boutin?

Invaincue sur 500m cette saison, Kim Boutin a consolidé sa place au sommet du classement sur la distance avec une performance sans faille aujourd’hui. N’eût été de la poussée tout en puissance de la Néerlandaise Suzanne Schulting sur les 100 derniers mètres lui permettant de remporter la médaille d’argent, Boutin aurait eu l’air seule sur la glace dans une finale qui mettait aux prises de grandes spécialistes du 500m comme Fan Kexing, Martina Valcepina et Yara van Kerkhof. Valcepina remporte le bronze. 

Chez les hommes, Liu Shaolin Sandor a remporté l’or dans une finale qui ne passera pas à l’histoire. Aucune pénalité n’a été accordée durant cette course, mais trois chutes sont venues tuer le spectacle. Wu Dajing termine deuxième alors que Liu Shaoang complète la course au troisième rang. 

La Corée en or sur 1500, Sarault monte encore une fois sur le podium

Sur 1500m, un doublé coréen a remporté les grands honneurs chez les femmes alors que Kim Alang termine au premier rang devant Choi Min Jeong. La jeune Canadienne Courtney Sarault termine quant à elle au troisième rang. Sarault avait terminé deuxième sur la distance le weekend dernier à Nagoya et est présentement septième au monde au classement cette saison. 

Du côté masculin, c’est en duo que trois des quatre nations représentées se sont présentées à la ligne de départ. Les Coréens Lee June Seo et Park Ji Won, les Chinois An Kai et Han Tianyu et les Canadiens Pascal Dion et Steven Dubois étaient accompagnés de l’Israélien Vladislav Bykanov en grande finale. Une finale plutôt sobre où les Chinois Han Tianyu et An Kai auront su profiter de la chute de Park Ji Won pour offrir respectivement l’argent et le bronze au public local réuni au Oriental Sports Center de Shanghai. Lee June Seo fut le grand gagnant de ce 1500m.

Les Pays-Bas remportent le relais mixte

Seulement deux médailles ont été attribuées en grande finale du relais mixte aujourd’hui alors que deux nations, le Canada et les États-Unis, ont été pénalisées. Les Pays-Bas terminent au premier rang alors que la Russie, toujours première au classement général, remporte l’argent pour une troisième fois cette saison. Les Russes avaient remporté l’or à Salt Lake City lors de la première manche de la saison. 

Les athlètes qualifiés batailleront pour des médailles sur 500m, 1000m, 3000m relais féminin et 5000m relais masculin demain.

Boutin and Sarault on the podium once again this weekend

Just like they did last week in Nagoya, Canada’s Kim Boutin and Courtney Lee Sarault visited the podium today in Shanghai.

Guess who won the 500m again?

Flawless this season on 500m, Canada’s Kim Boutin strengthen her lead on this season’s ranking on the distance with her performance today. Apart from Suzanne Schulting’s powerful push on the last 100m allowing her to win silver, Boutin  seemed alone on the ice today despite being joined on the starting line by 500m specialists such as Fan Kexin, Martina Valcepina and Yara van Kerkhof. Valcepina won the bronze. 

On the men’s side, Liu Shaolin Sandor won the gold medal in a forgettable final. No penalty was awarded during that final but three falls killed the show. Wu Dajing finished in second place while Liu Shaoang finished in third. 

Korea in gold on 1500m while Sarault gets another podium

On 1500m, two Korean ladies finished first and second as Kim Alang won the race finishing ahead of her teammate and reigning world champion on the distance Choi Min Jeong. Canada’s young star Courtney Sarault, who finished second on the distance last week, won the bronze. Sarault is presently in seventh place on this season’s ranking on 1500m.

The men’s competition on 1500m this weekend looked like a team event. Other than Israel’s Vladislav Bykanov, three duos qualified for the final including crowd favorites An Kai and Han Tianyu. Canada was represented by Pascal Dion and Steven Dubois while Park Ji Won and Lee June Seo were there for Korea. Even though Korean skaters looked on their way to grab two spots on the podium, the two Chinese skaters were able to capitalize on Park Ji Won’s fall with three laps to go to win silver (Han) and bronze (An) in front of their fans. Lee June Seo won the gold. 

The Dutch win the mix relay

Only two medals were awarded in the 2000m mix relay event as two of the four teams represented in the final, Canada and the USA, were penalized. The Netherlands finished first while Russia, who’s still in the lead on this season’s ranking, finished second. 

Athletes qualified for the second 500m of the weekend and the 1000m and teams who did the same on the 3000m and 5000m relay events will fight for medals tomorrow at the Oriental Sports Center.
