Consecration for Schulting and Elistratov in Gdansk

Suzanne Schulting and Semen Elistratov won the overall European Champion titles this weekend in Gdansk.

Short track speed skating fans finally had something to watch this weekend as the best skaters in Europe competed in Gdansk for the European Championships.

Schulting in control

Defending champion Suzanne Schulting won the 500m, 1000m and 1500m to secure the women's overall title. She was penalized in the 3000m for trying to help her teammate Selma Poutsma move up in the standings. This penalty had no impact on her final standings. At the end of the competition, Germany's Anna Seidel and Russia's Sofia Prosvirnova finished second and third.

Elistratov stands out

Russian veteran Semen Elistratov captured the men's title with his victory in the 1500m and 1000m. The young Italian Pietro Sighel, winner of the 3000m, and the Dutchman Itzhak de Laat, who showed great consistency, completed the podium. We must note the brilliant victory of Russia’s Konstantin Ivliev in the 500m.

France and The Netherlands relay champions

The French relay team took advantage of two falls and a disqualification from the other teams to win the gold medal in the relay. The Dutch and Italians took second and third place. The Russian team had initially won but was penalized afterward. In the men's event, the Dutch team won ahead of the Italians and Russians.

Liu Shaoang and Suzanne Schulting take the lead in Debrecen

Hungarian Liu Shaoang and Dutch Suzanne Schulting are in the lead after two distances at the 2020 European short track speed skating championships.

The 1500m and 500m final rounds as well as the relay semifinals were raced on the second day of racing in Hungary.


Liu brothers please their crowd 

Hungarian superstars Liu Shaoang and Liu Shaolin Sandor put on a great show for their fans today in Debrecen. Shaoang started his championship winning the 1500m in front of Itzhak de Laat and Vladislav Bykanov. On 500m, it was Liu Shaolin Sandor who took gold while Shaoang got silver and Semen Elistratov bronze. After two of the four individual distances, Liu Shaoang leads the overall ranking with 55 points, his brother is second with 36 and Dutch Itzhak de laat is third with 29.

Two in two for Schulting 

Reigning European and World champion Suzanne Schulting won both the 1500m and 500m finals today in Debrecen. Italian Arianna Fontana and German Anna Seidel finished second and third on 1500m while Martina Valcepina and Natalia Maliszewska completed the 500m podium. Schulting is a the top of the ranking after two races with 68 points. Italian teammates Arianna Fontana and Martina Valcepina are second and third, both with 21 points.

No surprises in the relays

Hungary, the Netherlands, Russia and Italy all qualified for both the men’s and women’s A final to be skated tomorrow.

Liu Shaoang et Suzanne Schulting prennent la tête à Debrecen

Le Hongrois Liu Shaoang et la Néerlandaise Suzanne Schulting sont en tête après deux distances aux championnats Européens courte piste 2020.

Les épreuves individuelles du 1500m et du 500m ainsi que les demi-finales du relais étaient au programme de cette deuxième journée de course en Hongrie.

Les frères Liu font plaisir à leur foule 

Les vedettes hongroises Liu Shaoang et Liu Shaolin Sandor ont offert tout un spectacle à leurs fans aujourd'hui à Debrecen. Shaoang a commencé son championnat en remportant le 1500m devant le Néerlandais Itzhak de Laat et l'Israélien Vladislav Bykanov. Sur 500m, c'est Liu Shaolin Sandor qui a remporté l'or devant Shaoang et le Russe Semen Elistratov. Après deux distances individuelles sur quatre, Liu Shaoang est en tête du classement général avec 55 points, son frère est deuxième avec 36 points et le Néerlandais Itzhak de laat est troisième avec 29 points.

Deux en deux pour Schulting 

La championne d'Europe et mondiale en titre, Suzanne Schulting, a remporté les finales du 1500 m et du 500 m aujourd'hui à Debrecen. L'Italienne Arianna Fontana et l'Allemande Anna Seidel ont terminé deuxième et troisième sur 1500m, tandis que l’Italienne Martina Valcepina et la Polonaise Natalia Maliszewska ont complété le podium du 500m. Schulting est en tête du classement après deux courses avec 68 points. Les coéquipières italiennes Arianna Fontana et Martina Valcepina sont deuxième et troisième, toutes deux avec 21 points.

Pas de surprises au relais

La Hongrie, les Pays-Bas, la Russie et l'Italie se sont tous qualifiés pour les finales A masculines et féminines qui se dérouleront demain.

Les meilleurs patineurs européens prêts à en découdre

Les championnats d’Europe courte piste 2020 ont débuté aujourd’hui à Debrecen en Hongrie.

La journée de qualification sur toutes les distances à Debrecen a été plutôt tranquille alors que la plupart des têtes d'affiche de ce championnat sont parvenues à se tailler une place pour le tableau principal de ce weekend. 

Chez les femmes, la Belge Hanne Desmet, les Néerlandaises Suzanne Schulting et Yara van Kerkhof, les Russes Ekaterina Efremenkova et Sofia Prosvirnova, les Hongroises Deanna Lockett et Petra Jaszapati, l’Italienne Arianna Fontana et la Polonaise Natalia Maliszewska ont toutes franchies leurs rondes de qualification avec succès sur les trois distances individuelles. La Britannique Elise Christie, pénalisée sur 1000m, l’Italienne Martina Valcepina, victime d’une chute sur 1000m, et la Néerlandaise Lara van Ruijven qui a chuté sur 1500m sont trois des patineuses bien positionnées à l’international qui n’auront pas eu une journée parfaite à Debrecen.

Plusieurs pénalités et chutes ont eu lieux du côté masculin, mais rien qui n'impliquait les favoris aux podiums. Ainsi, les amateurs de courte piste de Debrecen verrons à l’oeuvre Shaoang Liu, Shaolin Sandor Liu, Sébastien Lepape,  Alexander Shulginov, Semen Elistratov, Daan Breeuwsma, Itzhak de Laat, Vladislav Bykanov et Stijn Desmet dans toutes les distances individuelles courues cette fin de semaine.

Dans les six vagues de quarts de finales au relais, pas moins de trois disqualifications et deux cartons jaunes ont été décernés. De chaudes luttes sont à prévoir ce week end pour les titres de champions d’Europe du relais, notamment entre les Pays-Bas, La Russie et la Hongrie.

Europe's best short track skaters ready to battle it out

The 2020 European Short Track Championships started today in Debrecen, Hungary.

The qualifying day in Debrecen was rather calm as most of the medal contenders managed to secure a place in this weekend's main event. 

In the women's category, Belgian Hanne Desmet, Dutch Suzanne Schulting and Yara van Kerkhof, Russians Ekaterina Efremenkova and Sofia Prosvirnova, Hungarians Deanna Lockett and Petra Jaszapati, Italian Arianna Fontana and Polish Natalia Maliszewska all got through their qualification rounds on all three individual distances. Great Britain's Elise Christie, who was penalized on 1000m, Italy's Martina Valcepina, who crashed on 1000m, and Dutch Lara van Ruijven who crashed on 1500m are three of the higher ranked skaters who didn’t had a perfect day in Debrecen.

There were several penalties and crashes on the men's side of the competition, but nothing that involved the podiums favourites. Short track fans in Debrecen will see Shaoang Liu, Shaolin Sandor Liu, Sébastien Lepape, Alexander Shulginov, Semen Elistratov, Daan Breeuwsma, Itzhak de Laat, Vladislav Bykanov and Stijn Desmet compete in all individual distances this weekend.

In the six relay quarterfinal heats, no less than three disqualifications and two yellow cards were awarded. Big fights are expected this weekend between the Netherlands, Russia and Hungary for the European relay titles.

L'or et les records pour Roest et Sablikova en Pologne

La seconde manche de la Coupe du monde longue piste a été lancée aujourd’hui à Tomaszów Mazowiecki en Pologne.

Au jour 1 de cette manche de la Coupe du monde en sol polonais, les meilleurs patineurs mondiaux se disputaient les médailles au sprint par équipe, au 3000m féminin et au 5000m masculin.

La Russie et les Pays-Bas victorieux au sprint par équipe

L’équipe féminine russe est parvenue à vaincre les Néerlandaises cette semaine après avoir terminé deuxième derrière eux à Minsk vendredi dernier. Les représentantes des Pays-Bas se sont retrouvées au deuxième rang et les Japonaises, au troisième. 

L’équipe des Pays-Bas a encore remporté le sprint par équipe masculin alors que Thomas Krol prenait la place de Kai Verbij au sein du trio néerlandais cette semaine. Comme ce fut le cas à Minsk, les Chinois et les Canadiens ont complété le podium. 

Record de piste et médaille d’or pour Sablikova sur 3000m

L'expérimentée patineuse tchèque Martina Sablikova a remporté le 3000m devant la Néerlandaise Carlijn Achtereekte et la Russe Natalia Voronina. Interrogée par un journaliste de la ISU après sa course, Sablikova a avoué ne pas avoir pu s’entraîner cette semaine puisqu’elle était malade. Elle est quand même parvenue à abaisser son propre record de piste de près de huit secondes en parcourant la distance en 4:06.133.

Confrontation entre les Russes et les Néerlandais sur 5000m

Nous avons eu droit à une chaude lutte entre les Russes et les Néerlandais lors du 5000m masculin alors que le top 6 final était exclusivement composé de patineurs de ces deux pays. Patrick Roest a abaissé un autre record de piste avec son temps de 6:19.388 aujourd’hui en Pologne pour l'emporter. Les Russes Danila Smerikov et Denis Yuskov ont respectivement pris le deuxième et le troisième rang.

Roest and Sablikova both get gold and a track record in Poland

The second long track speed skating World Cup of the season started today in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Poland.

The best long track speed skaters in the world competed for the first medals of the weekend in the team sprint event, the men’s 5000m and the ladies’ 3000m.

Russia and the Netherlands won the team sprint

The Russian ladies’ team managed to beat the Dutch team this week after finishing just behind them last weekend in Minsk. The Dutch team finished second and the Japanese team third. 

The Netherlands once again won the men’s team sprint event as Thomas Krol was replacing Kai Verbij alongside Kjeld Nuis and Ronald Mulder this week. Krol did the trick as the Netherlands beat China and Canada for a second week in a row. 

Track record and gold for Martina Sablikova on 3000m 

Czech veteran Martina Sablikova won the ladies’ 3000m in a track record time of 4:06.133. After her race, Sablikova said to ISU reporters she didn’t train all week because she was sick. It didn’t stopped her from lowering her previous track record by 8 seconds. Dutch Carlijn Achtereekte and Russian Natalia Voronina completed the podium while last week’s winner Isabelle Weidemann took fourth place. 

Russian and Dutch confrontation on 5000m

We saw a tight competition between Russia and the Netherlands in the men’s 5000m as the top 6 was exclusively composed of skaters from these two countries. Again this week, another track record was lowered by Patrick Roest. He skated the 5000m distance in 6:19.388 and was followed by Russians Danila Smerikov and Denis Yuskov who respectively took second and third.

P2P 2019: Ancin parfaite, échappée payante pour Beddiaf

L’Espagnole Maite Ancin et le Français Nolan Beddiaf sont ressortis vainqueurs du P2P 2019 tenu en Espagne le weekend dernier.

L’organisation du P2P 2019 a innové cette année en ajoutant une étape à la compétition. Déjà considéré comme le marathon le plus difficile au monde avec sa course de 42 km rejoignant la ville de Pampelune à celle de Puente la Reina, le P2P comptait cette année une autre étape: un 21 km lors de la journée de samedi. Les gagnants du P2P allaient donc être décidés par le cumulatif des deux courses, un peu à la manière d’une course cycliste.

Maite Ancin parfaite sur toute la ligne

L’Espagnole Maite Ancin a remporté les deux étapes de la course de façon convaincante pour s’assurer la victoire au cumulatif. Lors du 21km de samedi, la victoire s’est jouée au sprint alors qu’Ancin a devancé Aura Quintana et Maialen Onate. Dimanche, Ancin s’est encore imposée, mais cette fois en échappée. Au fil d’arrivée, les Françaises Marine Lefeuvre et Chloé Geoffroy ont pris le deuxième et troisième rang derrière Ancin qui confirmait par le fait même sa victoire au cumulatif.

Beddiaf impérial au 42km

Champion du monde en titre du marathon, Nolan Beddiaf a remporté les grands honneurs d’une compétition masculine très relevée. Lors du 21km de samedi, l’Allemand Félix Rijhnen a coiffé le favori local Patxi Peula à la ligne d’arrivée pour l’emporter. Peula a pris le second rang et Elton de Souza le troisième. Le lendemain au 42km, Beddiaf qui n’avait pris que le cinquième rang la veille s’est imposé en franchissant le fil d’arrivée en solitaire avec un peu plus de trente secondes d’avance sur un groupe de six notamment composé de Peula et Rijhnen qui ont pris le deuxième et troisième rang. Cette victoire a permis au Français de remporter le classement général.

P2P 2019: Ancin is perfect and a rewarding breakaway for Beddiaf

Spain's Maite Ancin and Frenchman Nolan Beddiaf won the 2019 P2P race held in Spain last weekend.

The P2P organization innovated this year adding another race to the event. Already considered as the hardest marathon in the world with a hard course linking the cities of Pamplona and Puente la Reina, this year’s edition also had a 21km race the day before the 42km making it a two-stage event a bit like in cycling. The winner of the 2019 P2P was going to be the best skater in the cumulative of both races. 

Maite Ancin perfect from start to finish 

Spanish skater Maite Ancin won both races of the weekend. On Saturday in the 21k, victory was played in the final sprint and Ancin managed to beat Colombian Aura Quintana and Spanish Maialen Onate at the line. Sunday, Ancin once again won but with a different strategy, winning the 42k with a strong breakaway. At the line, French skaters Marine Lefeuvre and Chloé Geoffroy took second and third behind Ancin who confirmed her overall victory.

Beddiaf strongest man on 42k

Reigning marathon world champion from France Nolan Beddiaf won the 2019 P2P men’s race. On saturday it was German skater Felix Rijhnen who won it. He edged out crowd favorite Patxi Peula at the line to claim the first stage win. Peula was second and Elton de Souza third. The next day on 42k, Beddiaf was definitely the strongest skater as he finished thirty seconds before everybody. Patxi Peula once again took second place and Félix Rijhnen was third. This big win added to his fifth place in the sprint group the day before awarded Beddiaf the overall victory.
