New world champions were crowned in Salt Lake City

Some new  junior world champions were crowned this weekend at the Utah olympic oval.

While some senior skaters were in Amsterdam for the Allround world championships, the best juniors in the world were in Salt Lake City to fight for the world junior champion title. A lot of personal bests, national bests and junior world records were beaten this weekend in Salt Lake City. In fact there was exactly 32 new personal bests, 11 new national records, 84 new junior national records and 10 new junior world records.

Joy Beune’s domination

The ladies’ competition was dominated by skaters from the Netherlands all through the weekend. In the overall ranking, Joy Beune finished in first place with 153.776 points while her teammates and defending champion Jutta Leerdam and Elisa Dul finished in second and third with respectively 154.418 and 157.306 points.


Beune established the new junior world record on 1500m, 1000m and 3000m and completely dominated the competition. The only distance she didn’t win was the 500m were she finished in a respectable fifth place.

A tight men’s competition

The men’s competition featured Olympic medalist Min-Seok Kim, Olympian and world junior record older on 1500m and 3000m Allan Dahl Johansson. Some upcoming stars like David La Rue, Tyson Langelaar, Francesco Betti and Gabriel Odor were also in action.

At the end of the competition, Allan Dahl Johansson from Norway was crowned world junior champion with 143.060 points. The new champion was followed by Canadian Tyson Langelaar who got 145.061 points and Italian Francesco Betti who got 145.557 points.

We need to note David La Rue’s great performances of the weekend despite is result on 5000m that cost him in the overall ranking. La Rue who’s only been skating on long track for a year, won a silver medal on 1500m and finished in fourth place on 1000m.

No big surprises in the team events

If you followed the ladies’ individual competition, you will not be surprised to learn that the Netherlands won the team sprint and the team pursuit events. The Korean men’s team was unbeatable and established a new junior world record of 1:20,46 to win the men’s team sprint. Korea also won the team pursuit.

Canada shined in the mass start

Canadian rising stars David La Rue and Béatrice Lamarche won their respective mass start event. The two skaters with a strong short track background were too strong for the competition and won their first world champion titles.

De nouveaux champions du monde junior ont été couronnés cette fin de semaine à Salt Lake City à l’occasion des championnats du monde junior de longue piste.

Alors que certains patineurs séniors étaient à Amsterdam pour le championnat du monde toutes distances, les meilleurs juniors au monde étaient réunis à Salt Lake City pour les championnats du monde junior. Cette compétition, sur l’une des glaces les plus rapides au monde, a laissé la place à un grand nombre de records personnels, de records nationaux junior et même quelques records du monde junior. Pour être exact, il y a eu 32 records personnels, 11 records nationaux, 84 records nationaux juniors et 10 records du monde junior qui ont été battus cette fin de semaine.

La domination de Joy Beune

La compétition féminine a été complètement dominée par les Néerlandaises. Au classement final, Joy Beune s’est imposée avec 153.776 points et a été couronnée championne du monde junior. Ses coéquipières, Jutta Leerdam et Elisa Dul, ont terminé respectivement deuxième et troisième avec 154.418 et 157.306 points.

Beune a établi trois nouveaux records du monde junior ce weekend, soit au 1500m, au 1000m et au 3000m. La seule distance qu’elle n’a pas remportée est le 500m, où elle a amassé une respectable 5e position.

Compétition masculine serrée

La compétition des hommes incluait notamment le médaillé olympique Min-Seok Kim, l’Olympien et détenteur du record du monde junior sur 1500m et 3000m Allan Dahl Johansson, mais aussi des stars montantes comme David La Rue, Tyson Langelaar, Francesco Betti et Gabriel Odor.

C’est finalement le Norvégien Allan Dahl Johansson qui l'a emporté au cumulatif avec 143.060 points. Le Canadien Tyson Langelaar a conclu sa compétition au deuxième rang et l’Italien Francesco Betti au troisième.

Nous nous devons de noter les belles performances du Canadien David La Rue qui se serait fort probablement retrouvé sur le podium cumulatif, nut été du 5000m. La Rue a réussi à prendre la médaille d’argent sur 1500m et est passé tout prêt du podium sur 1000m en terminant quatrième.

Pas de surprise aux épreuves par équipe

Si vous avez suivi la compétition féminine, vous ne serez pas surpris d’apprendre que les Néerlandaises ont remporté l’épreuve du sprint par équipe et de la poursuite par équipe. Chez les hommes, ce sont les Coréens qui l’ont emporté lors de ces deux épreuves.

Le départ en groupe souris aux Canadiens

Le Canadien David La Rue s’est emparé de la victoire au départ en groupe masculin, alors que sa coéquipière Béatrice Lamarche s’est imposée lors de la course féminine. Les deux patineurs avec un bon bagage en courte piste étaient trop fort pour la concurrence et ont remporté leur premiers titres de champion du monde.
