While some semi-finals went to a sprint and others let a few skaters get in a breakaway, the majority of the favorites managed to reach the final. It should be noted that the reigning Olympic champion on the distance Nana Takagi fell while leading her semi-final and could not defend her Olympic title earned in Pyeonchang.

Belgian Bart Swings won the men's final with a powerful last straight. The inline speed skating world champion worked very hard throughout the race to catch up with the breakaways. He defended his place in the sprint to finish in front of Korea's JaeWon Chung and Seung-Hoon Lee. American Joey Mantia finished fourth.

In the women's race, Irene Schouten from the Netherlands won the final sprint just in front of Canadian Ivanie Blondin and Italian Francesca Lollobrigida. It was the fourth medal of the Dutch at these games.

The second stage of the Long Track World Cup was held last weekend in Stavanger, Norway.

By Jackob Savard

At the end of the competition, here are our highlights.

Watch out for Dubreuil, Shinhama and Arefyev on 500m this year

A great battle is expected throughout the year in the men's 500m. The three names to remember are Canada's Laurent Dubreuil, Japan's Tatsuya Shinhama and Russia's Artem Arefyev. During the two 500m races in Stavanger, Dubreuil finished 1st and 2nd, Shinhama 1st and 5th and Arefyev 2nd and 3rd.

Another great win for Nils van der Poel

It seems that every time Nils van der Poel puts on his skates, a new record is set. This time, the Swede won the men's 10000m with a track record of 12:38.928. He was 17 seconds faster than his closest competitor Jorrit Bergsma who took second place.

Kodaira finally beats Jackson

While American Erin Jackson seemed to be in a league of her own since the beginning of World Cups by winning the first three 500m of the season, Japan's Nao Kodaira finally managed to beat her in the second 500m of the weekend. Kodaira's time of 37.602 was the fastest of the weekend in the women's race.

Dutch 1000m hat trick

The men's 1000m saw a Dutch hat-trick as Thomas Krol, Kai Verbij and Kjeld Nuis took all three steps of the podium.

Bowe and Schouten set track records

To add to Nils van der Poel's 10000m track record, Brittany Bowe and Irene Shouten also set track records in their respective 1000m and 5000m wins.

Ning and Takagi triumph in 1500m

Zhongyan Ning of China and Miho Takagi of Japan won the 1500m. Ning, 22, has been turning heads since his arrival on the circuit, while the experienced Takagi adds another medal to her impressive collection.

Surprises in the team sprint

While one might have expected a strong Dutch presence on the podium in the team sprint, the Dutch skaters actually placed fourth in the women's event and ninth in the men's. Instead, Poland won in the women's event and China in the men's.
