Mission accomplished for Nils van der Poel on 5000m



Nils van der Poel won the men's 5000m at the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games.

The second day of long track competition at the Beijing Olympic Games featured the best skaters in the world on the men's 5000m. Nils van der Poel from Sweden was definitively the biggest threat as he won every long distances of the current World Cup season. 

Just like many expected, van der Poel won the olympic gold medal with a time of 6:08.84. The 25-year-old skater from Sweden took his first Olympic medal in career, the first gold medal for his country since 1988 and established a new Olympic record. Patrick Roest from the Netherlands gave everything he had and won silver by skating the distance in 6:09.31 while Hallgeir Engebraaten from Norway completed the podium with bronze thanks to his time of 6:09.88. 

The ladies' 1500m Is on the menu at the Olympic oval tomorrow.
