The first day of long track competition at the Beijing Olympic Games featured the best skaters in the world on 3000m. Among the favorites of the day were Canada's Isabelle Weidemann, Norway's Ragne Wiklund and the Netherlands' Irene Schouten. The world record holder on the distance Martina Sablikova and the reigning Olympic champion Carlijn Achtereekte were also skaters to watch.

At the end of the competition, it was Irene Schouten from the Netherlands who won gold with a time of 3:56.930. Her time is the new Olympic record on the distance. Schouten adds this gold medal to her bronze medal in the mass start at the 2018 olympics.

Italian Francesca Lollobrigida won silver by skating the distance in 3:58.060 while Canadian Isabelle Weidemann completed the podium with bronze and her time of 3:58.640. Weidmann medal is Canada's 200th medal at the Olympic Winter Games.

The men's 5000m is on the menu at the Olympic oval tomorrow.
