Takagi et Shinhama prennent la tête du championnat du monde sprint à Hamar

Les Japonais Miho Takagi et Tatsuya Shinhama mènent présentement les classements cumulatifs du championnat du monde sprint après la première journée de compétition à Hamar.

Les deux Japonais ont connu une convaincante première journée de course aux championnats du monde sprint aujourd'hui à Hamar et sont les favoris pour remporter le titre demain.


Chez les femmes, Miho Takagi a été la plus rapide sur 500 m (1) et 1000 m (1) et mène donc le classement cumulatif au terme de cette journée. Sa coéquipière Nao Kodaira, qui a terminé 2ème sur 500m et 8ème sur 1000m aujourd'hui, occupe la 2ème position avec 0,87 seconde de retard. Les Russes Olga Fatkulina et Angelina Golikova sont présentement 3e et 4e tandis que la Néerlandaise Jorien ter Mors complète le top 5.

Le Japonais Tatsuya Shinhama est en tête du classement masculin après un 500m et un 1000m. Shinhama a commencé sa journée en terminant deuxième sur 500m (1) et a conclu celle-ci en étant le plus rapide sur 1000m (1). Le Canadien Laurent Dubreuil, qui a remporté le 500m, est présentement en deuxième position juste devant le Russe Pavel Kulizhnikov. Le Japonais Yamato Matsui et le Coréen Min Kyu Cha sont 4ème et 5ème après cette première journée de compétition à Hamar.

Le championnat du monde sprint se terminera demain avec les 500m (2) et 1000m (2).

Miho Takagi and Tatsuya Shinhama are currently leading the World sprint championship rankings after a day of racing in Hamar.

Miho Takagi and Tatsuya Shinhama had a solid first day of racing at the World sprint speed skating championships today in Hamar.

In the ladies’ category, Miho Takagi was the fastest in both the 500m (1) and 1000m (1) races. With her two wins, she's in first place of the ladies' ranking. Here teammate Nao Kodaira who finished 2nd on 500m and 8th on 1000m sits in 2nd position. Russians Olga Fatkulina and Angelina Golikova are 3rd and 4th while Dutch Jorien ter Mors completes the top 5.

Japanese Tatsuya Shinhama leads the men’s ranking after a 500m and a 1000m. Shinhama started his day finishing second on 500m (1) and ended it being the fastest in the 1000m (1). Canadian Laurent Dubreuil won the 500m and is currently in second place of the overall classification followed closely by Russian Pavel Kulizhnikov. Japanese Yamato Matsui and Korean Min Kyu Cha are 4th and 5th after this first day of competition in Hamar.

The sprint championship will end tomorrow with the 500m (2) and 1000m (2).

Summer news from Christopher Fiola

After a tough season, Christopher Fiola just started his summer training with new objectives.

Some skaters perfectly represent Passion/Speed/Skating's spirit. Christopher Fiola is one of them. After a couple of years competing in short track, Fiola switched to long track following some injuries. He’s also one of the best inline speed skater in Canada and had the chance to represent his country at the Pan American games in Toronto in 2015. With his experience in the three main branches of our sport, his passion for speed skating sure runs deep.

Mass start or 500m?

During the 2017-2018 season, Fiola tried to qualify for the Pyeongchang Olympic games in the mass start event. After racing at the highest level of his young career on the World cup circuit, he wasn’t able to qualify for the Games. Just before the canadian olympic trials, Fiola came back to the sprint distances to try to qualify for the Olympics but it was a bit too late and he didn’t manage to make the team. His Olympic dream would have to wait.

And now?

After a season he considers as the hardest of his young career, the Montréal born skater, now training in Quebec City, is far from giving up. When we asked him about his summer preparation, he confirmed that he was feeling good and that he is working on new goals for the next season. ‘’I will try to improve my 500m this year. It’s the principal goal and it will be the first season where I will be putting all my energy on this distance’’ said Fiola, ‘’I would really like to improve my World cup ranking in the 500m. I already had some top 25 and for this season I would like to aim for top 20s with constant 9,7 seconds starts’’ added Fiola.

The summer preparation for Christopher Fiola will consist in a lot of cycling, some specific training camps and a higher number of weight training to improve his sprinter strength. He will also include inline skating sessions to his plan like he has always done in the past. Fiola’s progression will be interesting to watch in the next few months. Lorentzen et Ter mors détrônent les champions en titre

Havard Lorentzen et Jorien ter Mors ont été couronnés champions du monde sprint aujourd’hui à Changchun.

Au jour 2, les patineurs s'élancaient pour une seconde fois sur 500m et 1000m pour compléter le classement cumulatif.

Lorentzen a eu l’avantage sur Nuis & Verbij

Au terme des quatres courses, c’est le Norvégien Havard Lorentzen qui, à l’image de sa saison, s’est retrouvé en tête du classement. C’est la consécration pour le patineur de 25 ans qui surplombe le classement de la Coupe du monde au 500m et au 1000m en plus d’être champion olympique sur 500m et médaillé d’argent olympique au 1000m. Ce week-end, il a remporté les deux épreuves de 500m en plus de terminer deuxième et quatrième au 1000m. Les Néerlandais Kjeld Nuis et Kai Verbij ont terminé au deuxième et troisième échelon. Nuis a remporté les deux épreuves de 1000m, mais ses résultats au 500m l’ont empêché de battre Lorentzen.

Ter Mors n'a pas manqué sa chance

La championne en titre Nao Kodaira, malade, a dû abandonner la compétition avec une course à faire et donc laisser son titre à quelqu’un d’autre. Deuxième après trois distances, Jorien ter Mors a pu profité de l’abandon de la meneuse pour la détrôner au classement et remporter le prestigieux titre de championne du monde sprint. Elle a terminé première des deux épreuves de 1000m et amassé une deuxième et une troisième place sur 500m. L’américaine Brittany Bowe, qui fait un retour cette saison à la suite d’une commotion cérébrale, a terminé au deuxième rang du classement. La patineuse a offert de belles performances ce weekend avec notamment deux secondes places au 1000m. La Russe Olga Fatkulina a complété le podium féminin.

Dubreuil termine la compétition en beauté

Laurent Dubreuil, seul Canadien en piste, a réussi à se hisser sur la deuxième marche du podium du deuxième 500m de la compétition. Au cumulatif des deux jours de compétition, il termine au 12e rang.

Vous aurez la chance de revoir le plupart de ces patineurs une dernière fois cette saison à la Coupe du monde finale les 17 et 18 mars à Minsk au Bélarus.

Kodaira & Lorentzen en tête après la 1re journée des Championnats du Monde Sprint

Nao Kodaira occupe la première place après le premier jour des Championnats du Monde Sprint suivi de près par Jorien ter Mors et Brittany Bowe. Havard Lorentzen de Norvège mène la compétition masculine.  Kai Verbij et Kjeld Nuis des Pays-Bas sont présentement en deuxième et troisième positions.

Kai Verbij et Nao Kodaira cherchent à défendre leurs titres de champions à Changchun ce week-end. Kai Verbij a connu des résultats décevants à Pyeongchang et espère rebondir après une blessure lors des essais olympiques Néerlandais en décembre. Verbij devra travailler dur pour défendre son titre puisque son compatriote Kjeld Nuis a l'intention de poursuivre sur sa lancé, lui qui connaît une excellente saison. Nao Kodaira, qui a réalisé une très bonne performance à Pyeongchang, cherche à décrocher un deuxième titre consécutif aux Championnats Sprint.

C’est la première fois que l'Anneau de Changchun accueille des Championnats du Monde seniors de patinage de vitesse.

Kodaira mène le groupe

Kodaira occupe la première position du classement général chez les femmes après la première journée alors qu’elle a amassé 75.070 points. Elle a établi un nouveau record de piste sur 500m avec son temps de 37.23, passant sous la marque de 37.98 établie par l'Allemande Jenny Wolf en 2008. Kodaira connaît une saison incroyable et a été pratiquement intouchable sur 500m. Le mois dernier, elle a été sacrée championne Olympique sur la distance et a remporté la médaille d'argent au 1000m. Elle a terminé avec un temps de 1:15.68 sur 1000m à l’Anneau de Changchun aujourd’hui.

Jorien ter Mors des Pays-Bas occupe la deuxième position avec 75.280 points. Ter Mors a terminé avec un temps de 37.97 au 500m - bon pour la 3e position sur cette distance. Elle a terminé le 1000m avec un temps de 1.14.62 et a établi un nouveau record de piste, en battant le temps de Zhang Hong (CHN) qui était de 1:15.96 et qui datait de 2015.

Brittany Bowe occupe la troisième position grâce à ses performances du jour. La Championne sprint de 2015 et 2016 a dû batailler pour revenir sur la glace après avoir subi une commotion cérébrale en 2016.

Le bataille des champions Olympiques

Havard Lorentzen, le champion Olympique du 500m et médaillé d'argent au 1000m, mène la compétition du weekend avec 69.495 points et a établi un nouveau record de piste sur 500m grâce à son temps de 34.89. Ce temps lui permet de battre la marque de Yu Fengtong (CHN) qui datait de 2008. Lorentzen a eu une bonne course au 1000m et a terminé avec un temps de 1:09.21.

Verbij cherche à défendre sa couronne de champion sprint après une saison plutôt décevante. Il occupe la deuxième place du classement général pour le moment  avec 69.640 points. Il a terminé avec un temps de 35.03 au 500m et un temps de 1:09.22 au 1000m. Verbij a connu des difficultés lors des Jeux olympiques et cherchera à combler l'écart qui le sépare de la tête lorsque la compétition reprendra à l'Anneau de Changchun demain.

Le compatriote de Verbij, Kjeld Nuis - double médaillé d'or de Pyeongchang - occupe la troisième position du classement général avec 69.695 points. Nuis a terminé avec un temps de 35.21 au 500m et il a établi un nouveau record de piste au 1000m avec son temps de 1:08.97. Nuis est sûrement impatient de reprendre l’action demain, lui qui espère être couronné champion du monde sprint pour la première fois.

Laurent Dubreuil est le seul Canadien en piste ce week-end à l'Anneau de Changchun.  Il occupe la 13e position après le premier jour de ces championnats et cherchera à rattraper son retard demain. Dubreuil a terminé avec des temps de 35.07 au 500m et de 1:11.04 au 1000m.

Kodaira & Lorentzen in the lead after day one of the World Sprint Championships

Nao Kodaira leads the women’s event after day one of the ISU World Sprint Championships, with Jorien ter Mors and Brittany Bowe close behind. Havard Lorentzen of Norway leads the men’s competition, with Kai Verbij and Kjeld Nuis of the Netherlands sitting in the second and third spots, respectively.

Kai Verbij and Nao Kodaira are looking to defend their sprint crowns in Changchun this weekend. Kai Verbij, the 23 years old Dutchman, had disappointing Olympic games and is looking to bounce back from an injury sustained at the Dutch Olympic trials. Verbij has his work cut out for him as his compatriot Kjeld Nuis, who is coming off a very successful Olympic games, looks to continue building on a very strong season. Nao Kodaira is coming off a very strong performance at the Olympic games, and will be looking to capture a second consecutive sprint title.

This is the first time that the Changchun Oval is playing host to a Senior ISU World Championship. The Jilin Provincial Speed Skating Rink has previously hosted the Junior World Championships, Asian Winter Games and Senior World Cup events.

Kodaira leads the pack

Kodaira’s strong performance today puts her in first place overall with 75.070 points. She set a new track record in the 500m, dipping below the 37.98 mark set by Jenny Wolf of Germany in 2008, with her time of 37.23. She finished with a time of 1:15.68 in the 1000. Kodaira has had an incredible season and has been virtually untouchable in the 500m. Last month, she was crowned Olympic champion in the 500m and came in second, behind Jorien ter Mors of the Netherlands, in the 1000m.

Jorien ter Mors, who was recently crowned Olympic champion in the 1000m, sits in second with 75.280 points. Ter Mors finished with a time of 37.97 in the 500m – enough for a 3rd place ranking in that event. She was first overall in the 1000m with a time of 1.14.62 and set a new track record, breaking Zhang Hong of China’s 1:15.96 mark set in 2015.

Brittany Bowe currently sits in 3rd place overall after her strong performance today. The 2015 and 2016 sprint champion suffered a severe concussion in 2016 and has fought a tough battle to make it back onto the ice.

Battle of the Olympic Champions

It’s a battle of Olympic Champions as Havard Lorentzen and Kjeld Nuis fight with Verbij – the reigning sprint champion – for the top spot. Lorentzen is the man to beat in Changchun after winning Olympic gold in the 500m and coming in 2nd in the 1000m in Pyeongchang. Lorentzen leads with 69.495 points and set a new track record today in the 500m with his time of 34.89. His time today surpasses the previous mark set by Yu Fengtong of China in 2008. Lorentzen had a strong 1000m race and finished with a time of 1:09.21.

Verbij is looking to defend his sprint crown after a disappointing season and currently sits in the second position overall with 69.640 points. He finished with a time of 35.03 in the 500m, and 1:09.22 in the 1000m. Verbij is coming off a disappointing performance at the Olympic games and will be looking to close the gap when competition resumes at the Changchun Oval tomorrow.

Nuis finished with a time of 35.21 in the 500m, and set a new track record in the 1000m with his time of 1:08.97. Nuis will be looking to close the 0.20 point gap between him and first place, as he hopes to win his first world sprint title.

Laurent Dubreuil is the lone Canadian in action this weekend at the Changchun Oval. He currently sits in 13th place after day one of the ISU World Sprint Championships, and will be looking to make up some ground tomorrow. Dubreuil finished with a time of 35.07 in the 500m, and 1:11.04 in the 1000m.

Lorentzen remporte l'or - Des résultats surprenants pour les Chinois et les Coréens

Le Chinois Tingyu Gao, âgée de vingt ans, a également atteint le podium pour conclure une excitante soirée de patinage à l'Anneau de Gangneung.

Havard Lorentzen remporte l'or

Havard Lorentzen a remporté la médaille d'or de belle façon sur 500m établissant un record olympique de 34,41. Son temps d'aujourd'hui abaisse la marque précédente établie par l'Américain Casey Fitzrandaolph à Salt Lake City en 2002. Le dernier Norvégien à avoir remporté une médaille d'or au 500m était Finn Helgesen, qui avait remporté l'or à St. Moritz il y a 70 ans. Avant les Jeux Olympiques, Lorentzen avait remporté trois médailles d'or sur 500m pendant la saison de Coupe du Monde. Sous la direction de Jeremy Wotherspoon, les Norvégiens sont devenus une grande force sur les distances de type sprint et ils ont obtenu d’excellents résultats dans les dernières années.

C’est Min-kyu Cha de Corée qui a gagné la médaille d'argent, terminant seulement un centième de seconde derrière Lorentzen. Le Coréen a ravi les spectateurs avec son temps de 34,42, qui a momentanément représenté le record Olympique jusqu'à ce qu'il soit battu deux paires plus tard. Son meilleur résultat jusqu'à présent cette saison était une médaille d'argent sur 500m à la Coupe du monde de Calgary. Il a participé aux Championnats du monde sur distances individuelles l'année dernière à l'Anneau de Gangneung terminant au douzième rang. Son temps d'aujourd'hui est une grande amélioration par rapport à son temps de 35,01 de l'année dernière.

Le Chinois Tingyu Gao a complété le podium, remportant la médaille de bronze avec un temps de 34,65. À seulement 20 ans, Tingyu Gao devient le premier représentant de la Chine chez les hommes à remporter une médaille olympique en patinage de vitesse. Tingyu Gao n'était pas considéré comme un prétendant pour remporter une médaille, lui qui n'a pas encore remporté de médaille sur le circuit de la Coupe du monde. Après sa performance d'aujourd'hui, ce patineur continuera certainement d'exceller dans les prochaines années.

De nombreux patineurs ont eu des problèmes avec la glace sur la ligne de départ. Le Polonais Artur Nogal a d'ailleurs subi une chute dès le départ. Une déception pour lui qui cherchait à améliorer son résultat d'il y a quatre ans à Sotchi.

Déception pour les Canadiens

Alex Boisvert-Lacroix de Sherbrooke, Qc, a été le meilleur chez les Canadiens présent à l'Anneau de Gangneung. Il patinait dans la dernière paire et termine onzième avec un temps de 34,934. C'est un résultat décevant pour le Canadien qui a connu une très bonne saison l’automne dernier remportant des médailles d’or au 500m lors des Coupes du monde à Calgary et à Salt Lake City. Gilmore Junio, de Calgary, et Laurent Dubreuil, de Lévis, étaient les deux autres Canadiens en compétition aujourd'hui. Junio, qui participe à ses deuxièmes Jeux olympiques, a terminé au 17e rang avec un temps de 35.158. Dubreuil, qui était considéré par beaucoup comme un candidat pour une médaille au 500m, a terminé avec une décevante 18e place et un temps de 35.16.

Poursuite chez les femmes

Les Néerlandaises ont continué leur domination et ont terminé en première place des qualifications avec un nouveau record olympique de 2:55.61. Ce temps brise leur record précédent établi il y a quatre ans à Sotchi. Leenstra et de Jong seront à la recherche de leur deuxième médaille des Jeux alors que Ireen Wüst cherchera à ajouter une troisième médaille à sa collection. Les Japonaises ont été pratiquement intouchables cette saison en Coupe du monde et ont terminé en deuxième position aujourd'hui avec un temps de 2:56.08.

Le trio canadien d'Ivanie Blondin, Isabelle Weidemann et Josie Morrison s’est qualifié pour les demi-finales de mercredi avec un temps de 2:59.03. Avant les Jeux olympiques, les Canadiennes étaient troisième au classement de la Coupe du monde. Les Américaines complètent le groupe des équipes accédant aux demi-finales suite à un temps de 2:59.75.

Dai Dai Ntab crowned Netherlands' sprint king

The Netherlands held there sprint and allround championships last weekend in Heerenveen.

Even though some big names were absent from the championships, there was still great competition for the sprint and allround champion titles.  

A dose of confidence for Dai Dai Ntab

The 500m specialist Dai Dai Ntab was crowned Dutch sprint champion after two 500m and two 1000m races. Hein Otterspeer and Thomas Krol finished second and third. Ntab won the first 500m, finished second in the other 500m and finished fourth in both 1000m races. He was the most constant skater of the top four skaters in this tight competition. This victory will surely give him a little boost after the tough moments he went through during the Dutch olympic selections. Ntab who was one of the favorites to qualify in the 500m was disqualified for two false starts in his only chance to make the olympic team. His victory of the weekend at the Dutch sprint championship will not give him his olympic dream back, but it will surely give him a ton of motivation and confidence for the World sprint championships that will be raced in Changchun, China in March.

De jong near perfect

Letita de Jong offered a near perfect performance to win the ladies' sprint championships. Anice Das who raced an awesome 500m at the Dutch Olympic selection earlier this season finished second and Sanneke de Neeling third.

Bosker and van der Weijden allround champions

With the absence of Sven Kramer and Ireen Wüst, the allround competition was completely open. At the end of the weekend, Marcel Bosker and Annouk van der Wijden finished at the top of the ranking. Lex Dijkstra and Thomas Geerdinck finished second and third in the men’s competition while Linda de Vries and Melissa Wijfje completed the ladies podium.

The World sprint championship will be held in Changchun the 3th and 4th of March and the World allround championship will be raced the following week in Amsterdam.
