The ISU is forced to cancel the European championships in short track speed skating

The pandemic strikes again. The  German Speed Skating Association no longer able to present the ISU European short track championships.

It is by way of a press release that we learned that one month before the presentation of the European championships, the German federation withdraws from the organization of the event. Here is the full statement sent to the media by the International skating union today, December 7, 2021.

The ISU was informed by the German Speed Skating Association (DESG) that the ISU European Short Track Speed Skating, scheduled to take place from January 14 – 16, 2022 in Dresden (GER) cannot be held as planned. Unfortunately, considering the complicated epidemic situation involving travel restrictions, quarantine requirements, safety concerns and logistical challenges, the organization of the event was extremely challenging. The German Speed Skating Association and the Local Organizing Committee tried their best to find solutions but ultimately concluded that, regrettably, they are unable to organize and hold the event as planned. The ISU regrets that the hosting of the event is no longer possible in Dresden in January. The ISU contacted all European ISU Members to learn potential availability to host this Event and received interest from the Dutch Member KNSB for a possible relocation of the Event in Dordrecht (NED) at the same dates. Unfortunately, despite all efforts made by the KNSB to take over the organization of this Event, the sanitary restrictions made this relocation impossible. The ISU thanks the German Speed Skating Association and the KNSB for their efforts and cooperation.

The ISU Four Continents Short Track Speed Skating Championships scheduled for the same weekend in Salt Lake City are still on the schedule.

L'ISU se voit contrainte d'annuler les Championnats d'Europe de patinage de vitesse courte piste

La pandémie frappe à nouveau. L'Association allemande de patinage de vitesse n'est plus en mesure de présenter les championnats d'Europe ISU sur courte piste.

L'ISU (Union internationale de patinage) a été informée par l'Association allemande de patinage de vitesse (DESG) que les Championnats d’Europe ISU de patinage de vitesse courte piste qui devaient avoir lieu du 14 au 16 janvier 2022 à Dresde (GER) ne pourront pas avoir lieu comme prévu. Malheureusement, compte tenu de la situation épidémique compliquée impliquant des restrictions de voyage, les exigences de quarantaine, les problèmes de sécurité et les défis logistiques, l'organisation de l'événement était devenue extrêmement difficile. L'Association allemande de patinage de vitesse et le comité d'organisation local ont fait de leur mieux pour pour trouver des solutions mais ont finalement conclu qu’ ils ne sont pas en mesure d'organiser et de tenir l'événement comme prévu. L'ISU regrette que la tenue de l'événement ne soit plus possible à Dresde en janvier.

L'Union internationale de patinage a contacté tous les membres européens de l'ISU pour connaître leur disponibilité potentielle à accueillir cet événement et les instances néerlandaises (KNSB) ont démontré de l’intérêt pour une éventuelle relocalisation de l'événement à Dordrecht (NED) aux mêmes dates. Cependant, malgré tous les efforts déployés par la KNSB pour reprendre l'organisation de l’événement, les restrictions sanitaires ont rendu cette relocalisation impossible. L'ISU tient à remercier l'Association allemande de patinage de vitesse et la KNSB pour leurs efforts et leur coopération.

Les Championnats des quatre continents prévus le même weekend à Salt Lake City sont toujours à l'horaire.

World cup season is now over in short track

Athletes from all the countries part of the short track speed skating circuit faced each other one last time before the 2022 Olympic Games.

Exciting final in the ladies' 1000m

Suzanne Schulting was already assured of the title of 2021-22 World Cup 1000m overall champion before she even entered the A final today. With Schulting, Boutin, Choi, Maliszewska and Sarault in the main event, thrill seekers could expect a great final. While she often stay in the back waiting to attack in the last third of the race, Choi Min-jeong of Korea only waited three laps this time around before taking the lead. Although Kim Boutin managed to move to the front for a moment, Choi would eventually come back to pass the Canadian on the last lap to take the top honors. Boutin finished in 2nd place winning another medal this weekend. Suzanne Schulting finally crossed the finish line in 4th place, but found herself on the podium with the bronze medal following a penalty awarded to Nathalia Maliszewska. In the final season standings, Schulting finished ahead of American Kristen Santos and Korea's Choi. 

One noticeable absence and one surprising presence in the men's final

In the absence of Hwang Dae-heon, Canadian Pascal Dion also started the 1000m grand final with the assurance of winning the title in the overall standing on the distance. Dion decided to play the observer but was a little too late in launching his attack while the Hungarians Liu Shaoang and John-Henry Krueger were the driving forces of this final. Liu ended up finishing 1st ahead of Krueger while Pietro Sieghel of Italy finished 3rd. Dion finished in 4th place. Canadian fans were treated to another great surprise in the final as Brendan Corey from Fredericton, New Brunswick also took the starting line of this grand final. Corey who's now skating under the Australian flag placed 5th. In the cumulative ranking of the four 1000m events of the season that ended today, Pascal Dion finished 1st ahead of Hwang Dae-heon and Itzhak de Laat.

Relay Results The final laps of the mixed relay final were very exciting as the Netherlands took the gold medal ahead of Hungary by three hundredths of a second. This victory allowed us to see a smiling Sjinkie Knegt once again this weekend and what about the performance of young Jens 'T Woot who won the bet to finish the event in force against Liu Shaolin Sandor. China finished in 3rd place today. In the women's relay, the Dutch gave a gold medal to their fans in Dordrecht. Canada finished 2nd while Italy won the bronze medal. As for the men's relay, veteran Kwak Yoon-gy beat Steven Dubois at the finish line, allowing Korea to win the event, finishing ahead of Canada and Hungary. The men's relay final was also the last laps on the World Cup circuit for veteran Charles Hamelin.

Important dates to remember for the next months

The European Championships will be held from January 14 to 16 in Dresden, Germany, while the Four Continents Championships will be held on the same dates in Salt Lake City, USA. The Olympic Games in Beijing, China will be held from February 4th to 20th and the season will end on the weekend of March 18th to 20th when Montreal will host the World Championships.

La saison de Coupe du monde est maintenant terminée en courte piste

Les athlètes de tous les pays s'affrontaient pour une dernière fois avant les Jeux olympiques de Pékin 2022.

Finale enlevante chez les femmes sur 1000m

Suzanne Schulting était déjà assurée du titre de championne au classement cumulatif de la saison 2021-22 de Coupe du monde sur 1000m avant même de participer à la grande finale. Avec Schulting, Boutin, Choi, Maliszewska et Sarault en finale, les amateurs de sensations fortes pouvaient tout de même s’attendre à une finale chaudement disputée. Alors qu’elle nous a habitué à patiner en retrait avant d’attaquer dans le dernier tiers de la course, la Coréenne Choi Min-jeong n’a attendu que trois tours avant de prendre la tête. Bien que Kim Boutin ait réussi à reprendre les devant un instant, Choi allait finalement reprendre le premier rang lors du dernier tour pour remporter les grands honneurs. Kim Boutin termine 2e. Suzanne Schulting passe finalement la ligne d’arrivée en 4e place, mais se retrouve sur le podium avec la médaille de bronze suite à une pénalité décernée à Nathalia Maliszewska. Au classement final de la saison, Schulting termine devant l’Américaine Kristen Santos et la Coréenne Choi. 

Absence remarquée et présence inattendue en finale chez les hommes

En l’absence de Hwang Dae-heon, le Canadien Pascal Dion débutait lui aussi la grande finale sur 1000m avec l’assurance de remporter le titre au classement cumulatif. Décidant de jouer les observateurs, Dion s’y est pris un peu trop tard pour lancer son attaque alors que les Hongrois Liu Shaoang et John-Henry Krueger jouaient les locomotives de cette finale. Liu termine finalement au 1er rang devant Krueger alors que l’Italien Pietro Sighel termine 3e. Dion termine au 4e rang. Les amateurs canadiens avait droit à une autre belle surprise en finale alors que Brendan Corey originaire de Fredericton au Nouveau-Brunswick prenait également place sur la ligne de départ de cette grande finale. Corey termine au 5e rang. Au classement cumulatif des quatre épreuves de 1000m de la saison qui prend fin, Pascal Dion termine au 1er rang devant Hwang Dae-heon et Itzhak de Laat.

Résultats des relais

Derniers tours endiablés en finale du relais mixte alors que les Pays-Bas mettent la main sur la médaille d'or devançant la Hongrie par trois centièmes de seconde. Cette victoire nous a permis de revoir un Sjinkie Knegt tout sourire ce weekend devant ses fans et que dire de la performance du jeune Jens 'T Woot qui remporte la pari de terminer l'épreuve en force contre Liu Shaolin Sandor. La Chine termine au 3e rang aujourd'hui. Du côté du relais féminin, les Néerlandaises ont offert une médaille d'or à leurs partisans présents à Dordrecht. Le Canada termine 2e alors que l'Italie remporte la médaille de bronze. Pour ce qui est du relais masculin le vétéran Kwak Yoon-gy coiffe Steven Dubois au fil d'arrivée permettant à la Corée de remporté l'épreuve terminant devant le Canada et la Hongrie. Cette finale du relais chez les hommes marquait également les derniers tours du piste sur le circuit de la Coupe du monde pour le vétéran Charles Hamelin.

Les dates importantes à retenir pour les prochains mois

Les Championnats Européens se tiendront du 14 au 16 janvier à Dresden en Allemagne alors qu’aux mêmes dates se tiendront les Championnats des quatre continents à Salt Lake City aux États-Unis. Les Jeux Olympiques de Pékin en Chine se tiendront du 4 au 20 février et la saison se terminera le weekend du 18 au 20 mars alors que Montréal recevra les Championnats du monde 2022.

Kim Boutin wins gold today in the Netherlands

Kim Boutin came really close to breaking her world record on 500m today.

Lee Yubin holds off Suzanne Schulting on 1500m

The top five ranked skaters in the 1500m after three World Cup legs were set to compete in the main final on the distance today. The skaters to watch for the overall season ranking were Suzanne Schulting of the Netherlands and Lee Yubin of Korea. After a very strategic start to the race, it became clear in the final laps that the overall ranking mattered to the skaters. The attacks became more intense and Korea's Lee Yubin was able to take advantage of a tight battle between Schulting and Canada's Courtney Sarault to take the top prize today. With the win, Lee finishes first in the overall standings for the 2021-22 World Cup season. Courtney Sarault's silver medal today puts her in third place in the standings, while Schulting walked away with the bronze medal today and finished second overall for the season. 

Sjinkie Knegt's feel good moment

On the men's side, it was good to see 2015 World Champion Sjinkie Knegt back on the podium in the 1500m. Knegt, who has been plagued by bad luck and injuries over the past few seasons, seemed very happy with his silver medal win today in Dordrecht. The Dutch athlete was only beaten to the finish line by Ren Ziwei from China who, in addition to winning the gold medal today, also took the overall title in the distance. The bronze medal went to Korean Park Jang Hyuk who with his 3rd place today also finishes 3rd in the season standings. Russia's Semen Elistratov who settled for 7th place today, finishes 2nd overall. 

Boutin completes the season on 500m with a gold medal

After coming within four thousandths of a second of breaking her world record on 500m in the quarter-finals, Kim Boutin won the main event over the distance following a heated battle with Italy's Arianna Fontana. Suzanne Schulting, last week's winner in the distance, tried a late move to pass Fontana, but her attempt ended up in the mats. Schulting had to settle for 4th place in the final. Russian athlete Elena Seregina took home the bronze medal. In the final ranking of the season, Ariana Fontana finishes first followed by Kim Boutin and Nathalia Maliszewska.

Wu Dajing is ready for the Beijing Olympics

In the men's race, world record holder Wu Dajing was dominant in this last grand final of the season over 500m. The Chinese skater led the race from start to finish and Canada's Steven Dubois seemed to be the only one who could skate closely in Wu's path today. Russia's Konstantin Ivliev finished behind Dubois in 3rd place while Hungary's Liu Shaolin Sandor, who had a fall today, settled for 4th place but still finishes first overall ahead of Wu Dajing and Ren Ziwei in the 2021-22 World Cup season ranking.

Although the World cup season is over, the athletes will be back in action in January for the European championships and the Four continents championships. This season will culminate in February with the Olympic games and come to an end in March with the World championships.

Kim Boutin s'offre l'or aujourd'hui aux Pays-Bas

Lee Yubin tient tête à Suzanne Schulting

Les cinq patineuses les mieux classées sur 1500m après trois manches de Coupe du monde avaient rendez-vous en grande finale sur la distance aujourd’hui. Les patineuses à surveiller pour remporter le classement général de la saison étaient la Néerlandaise Suzanne Schulting et la Coréenne Lee Yubin. Après un début de course très stratégique, il est devenu clair dans les derniers tours que le classement général importait aux patineuses présentes en grande finale. Les attaques ont été plus intenses en fin de course et la Coréenne Lee Yubin aura su profiter d’une lutte serrée entre Schulting et la Canadienne Courtney Sarault pour remporter les grands honneurs aujourd’hui. Avec cette victoire, Lee termine au premier rang du classement général de la saison de Coupe du monde 2021-22. La médaille d’argent remportée aujourd’hui par Courtney Sarault lui permet de terminer au 3e rang du classement alors que Schulting repart avec la médaille de bronze aujourd’hui et termine au 2e rang du classement cumulatif. 

Sjinkie Knegt, tout sourire sur 1500m

Chez les hommes, il faisait bon de revoir le champion du monde 2015 Sjinkie Knegt monter sur le podium sur 1500m. Knegt qui a accumulé les malchances et les blessures au cours des dernières saisons, semblait très heureux de sa médaille d’argent remportée aujourd’hui à Dordrecht. Le Néerlandais n’a été devancé à la ligne d’arrivée que par le Chinois Ren Ziwei qui, en plus de la médaille d’or aujourd’hui, met la main sur le titre au classement général sur la distance. La médaille de bronze est allée au Coréen Park Jang Hyuk qui avec sa 3e place aujourd’hui termine également 3e au classement de la saison. Le Russe Semen Elistratov qui s'est contenté du 7e rang aujourd'hui, termine 2e au classement cumulatif.

Après avoir passé à quatre millièmes de seconde de battre son record du monde sur 500m en quart de finale, Kim Boutin remporte la grande finale sur la distance suite à une chaude lutte avec l’Italienne Arianna Fontana. Suzanne Schulting, gagnante la semaine dernière sur la distance, a tenté une manœuvre en fin de course pour dépasser Fontana, mais sa tentative a abouti dans les matelas. Schulting a dû se contenter de la 4e place de cette finale. C’est l’athlète russe Elena Seregina qui est repartie avec la médaille de bronze. Au classement finale de la saison, Ariana Fontana termine au premier rang suivi par Kim Boutin et Nathalia Maliszewska.

Wu Dajing est prêt pour les Jeux de Pékin

Chez les hommes, le recordman mondial Wu Dajing a été dominant lors de cette dernière grande finale de la saison sur 500m. Le Chinois a mené la course de bout en bout et Steven Dubois du Canada semblait être le seul à pouvoir patiner de près dans son sillon aujourd’hui. Le Russe Konstantin Ivliev termine derrière Dubois en 3e place alors que le Hongrois Liu Shaolin Sandor victime d’une chute se contente de la 4e place aujourd’hui mais termine tout de même au premier rang du classement général devant Wu Dajing et Ren Ziwei.

Le calendrier de compétition reprendra le 14 janvier avec les Championnats d'Europe et les Championnats des quatre continents pour ensuite culminer avec les Jeux olympiques en février et les Championnats du monde en mars.
