Beijing 2022: What went wrong on Day 2 of the competition in short track speed skating?

Editorial by Carl Savard

Having a bad day at work while the world is watching is never a good situation. In 30 years of following short track speed skating and over 10 years of being close to the athletes and other actors of the sport, I’ve seen my share of times when many fans and skaters reacted strongly to a day of competition. Today was one of those. When you’re part of a sport that screams for recognition outside of the Olympics, it would be so much better if things could always go smoothly. Sadly, from time to time you will get a chaotic day. The ice condition could be bad and be the cause of many falls, leading to many incidents and therefore many decisions having to be made by the referees. The stakes can be higher than usual and bring additional stress for athletes and the officiating committee. This second day of competition in the short track speed skating event of the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games was a chaotic one. Mainly, but not only, because of the 1000m final on the men’s side of the competition.

Questionable decisions happened first in the semifinals. In one of the race, Wu Dajing could have been penalized for a S2 penalty on Itzhak de Laat (S2 penalty is In the straight / Lane change / From inside to outside causing contact). Maybe if de Laat would have sold it like some other skaters do it would have been called a penalty but that’s not how de Laat operates. With three laps to go and the skaters battling for 4th place, it may have been seen as something minor but considering Wu ended up being in the final because of other race incidents, this non-decision still means something. It’s nothing compared to the decision that was made in the other semi-final though. Halfway through the race, after having been blocked by Li Wenlong, Hwang Dae Heon outwitted the Chinese by moving inside while Li was looking outside. A superb manoeuver which propelled Hwang from 3rd place to the lead. Li was surprised by the move and lost speed but he was not physically pushed by Hwang. “Look at that phenomenal move by Hwang Dae Heon. That was textbook!” That’s how it was described by two-time olympic medallist and 2011 world champion on 1500m Katherine Reutter on the NBC broadcast. That’s also how it was seen by fans and an army of skaters around the world. That’s the kind of beauty on ice that can bring new fans to the sport. Now instead we just told them it’s not what the sport is about. The referee called it a S6 Penalty - Illegal Late Pass | causing Contact. A lot of us have looked at it countless times today and just can’t come to the same conclusion. That penalty didn’t happen because of what Hwang did, that penalty happened because Li couldn’t take the heat and got out of the kitchen. Sadly for the sport, that’s not what the man taking the decisions saw.

And then there was the A final. After two laps at a good pace, the race was recalled but the skaters kept skating for more than a lap before they could hear the whistle. When it was time to relaunch the race, it was pretty clear that things could become hectic. We ended up with a lackluster final, with plenty of arm push from most of the tired skaters, a yellow card given to Liu Shaolin Sandor and skaters on the podium that could have been penalized during the race but were not.

Following the events, Korea complained about Hwang’s penalty and Hungary also wanted the referee to reevaluate his decision about the final. They were told they didn’t have the right to protest but the referee would still look at it. You can find the ISU answer HERE.

An answer that may not satisfy you. I know it didn’t satisfy me.

Today was not a good day for short track.

Kim Boutin wins gold today in the Netherlands

Kim Boutin came really close to breaking her world record on 500m today.

Lee Yubin holds off Suzanne Schulting on 1500m

The top five ranked skaters in the 1500m after three World Cup legs were set to compete in the main final on the distance today. The skaters to watch for the overall season ranking were Suzanne Schulting of the Netherlands and Lee Yubin of Korea. After a very strategic start to the race, it became clear in the final laps that the overall ranking mattered to the skaters. The attacks became more intense and Korea's Lee Yubin was able to take advantage of a tight battle between Schulting and Canada's Courtney Sarault to take the top prize today. With the win, Lee finishes first in the overall standings for the 2021-22 World Cup season. Courtney Sarault's silver medal today puts her in third place in the standings, while Schulting walked away with the bronze medal today and finished second overall for the season.

Sjinkie Knegt's feel good moment

On the men's side, it was good to see 2015 World Champion Sjinkie Knegt back on the podium in the 1500m. Knegt, who has been plagued by bad luck and injuries over the past few seasons, seemed very happy with his silver medal win today in Dordrecht. The Dutch athlete was only beaten to the finish line by Ren Ziwei from China who, in addition to winning the gold medal today, also took the overall title in the distance. The bronze medal went to Korean Park Jang Hyuk who with his 3rd place today also finishes 3rd in the season standings. Russia's Semen Elistratov who settled for 7th place today, finishes 2nd overall.

Boutin completes the season on 500m with a gold medal

After coming within four thousandths of a second of breaking her world record on 500m in the quarter-finals, Kim Boutin won the main event over the distance following a heated battle with Italy's Arianna Fontana. Suzanne Schulting, last week's winner in the distance, tried a late move to pass Fontana, but her attempt ended up in the mats. Schulting had to settle for 4th place in the final. Russian athlete Elena Seregina took home the bronze medal. In the final ranking of the season, Ariana Fontana finishes first followed by Kim Boutin and Nathalia Maliszewska.

Wu Dajing is ready for the Beijing Olympics

In the men's race, world record holder Wu Dajing was dominant in this last grand final of the season over 500m. The Chinese skater led the race from start to finish and Canada's Steven Dubois seemed to be the only one who could skate closely in Wu's path today. Russia's Konstantin Ivliev finished behind Dubois in 3rd place while Hungary's Liu Shaolin Sandor, who had a fall today, settled for 4th place but still finishes first overall ahead of Wu Dajing and Ren Ziwei in the 2021-22 World Cup season ranking.

A world record for Kim Boutin - Viktor Ahn adds more medals to his comeback weekend

Just like that, the first of six World cup events of the season came to a close in Salt Lake City. Legends, superstars and newcomers offered quite a show all through the weekend and it was a great start to what will most definitely be an exciting season.

A world record and a gold medal for Boutin
After setting a new world record on 500m in the quarterfinals, Kim Boutin was ready to grab her first medal on the distance today but to do so, she had to race against Lara van Ruijven, Qu Chunyu and Martina Valcepina winner of the first 500m of the weekend yesterday. Boutin took the lead from the get go. Italy’s Martina Valcepina tried putting some pressure on the leader but she fell which created a small gap and the other two athletes were not able to come back on Boutin. Kim Boutin won the gold, while China’s Qu Chunyu won silver and Lara van Ruijven from the Netherlands ended up with the bronze.

On the men’s side, Wu Dajing, Liu Shaolin Sandor, Abzal Azhgaliyev and Kim Dong Wook had to battle each other to get on the podium. World record holder Wu Dajing, who missed the podium yesterday, was not going to pass a second opportunity to show his prowess on the distance and ended up skating the fastest time on 500m this weekend to win the gold. He was joined on the podium by Liu Shaolin Sandor (silver) and Abzal Azhgaliyev (bronze).

Schulting and Hwang win the 1000m, Ahn grabs another medal
In the 1000m competition, reigning overall world champion Suzanne Schulting won the gold medal. The Dutch superstar was almost passed with just a few meters to go but her composure allowed her to keep her position and win the race. She was joined on the podium by two Chinese skaters, Han Yutong (silver) et Zhang Chutong (bronze). A fall by Korea’s Seo Whi Min, who was penalised, and Russia’s Sofia Prosvirnova also took place during the race.

On the men's side of the competition, the main final on 1000m was a highly exciting one. Semen Elistratov, Park Ji Won, Hwang Dae Heon, Han Tianyu and Viktor Ahn were on the starting line. Korea's Hwang Dae Heon won the gold medal while his compatriot Park Ji Won won the bronze. Living legend Viktor Ahn added a silver medal to his collection.

Classic rivalries in the relay events
In the A final of the women's relay event, China finished ahead of its rival Korea to win the gold medal. Finishing third behind Korea was Canada. The Canadian ladies were able to orchestrate a pass following a hesitation by Dutch skater Yara van Kerkhof late in the race to win the bronze.

Viktor Ahn's return seemed to have bring the tension between Russia and Korea to another level. In an action packed relay final, Russia came on top while Korea finished second and Canada third. With this team win, Viktor Ahn ends the weekend with four medals.

Athletes and fans now turn their focus to World cup #2 taking place next weekend in Montreal.

2018-2019 short track season recap: China

Here’s our 2018-2019 season recap for team China in short track speed skating.

By Jackob Savard
Photo: Martin Holtom

Team China, who will host the next winter Olympic games in 2022, had a calmer 2018-2019 season in short track as their veterans missed a good portion of the season.

Li Jinyu and Fan Kexin still on top
Just like last year, Li Jinyu and Fan Kexin led the Chinese national team on the women's side. In the World cup final ranking, 18-year-old Li Jinyu ended her season in 5th place of the 1500m while Fan Kexin took the 6th position on 500m even though she only skated in the first two World cup events. During the World championships in Bulgaria, Fan finished 7th overall while her teammate Zang Yize, who also had a good season finished 8th. We also saw some good things from skaters such as Guo Yihan, Han Yutong and Li Xuan during the season.

Good season for Ren Ziwei et Wu Dajing
Olympic champion and world record holder on 500m Wu Dajing only skated in the first two World cup events of the season and at the World championships, but was dominant. He won the three 500m in which he took part in and that was enough to end the season in 2nd place on the world classification. His young teammate Ren Ziwei stood out on 1000m ending the season in 4th place of the World cup ranking. At World championships, Wu finished 2nd on 500m and 5th overall while Ren finished 8th overall. Helped by their teammates Xu Hongzhi et Yang Shuai, they were also crowned vice-champion in the 5000m relay.

China also did well in the mix relay event finishing in 2nd place in 2018-2019.

Mid-season bulletin in short track: China

China has been one of the best countries in short track for a while now. Here’s our mid-season bulletin concerning the performances of its athlete so far this season.

Par Jackob Savard
Photo: Danny Kim (DK_ST)

Since it will host the next winter Olympic games in 2022, China is a country that we will probably see dominate in short track in the next few years, especially after hiring Canadian coach Derrick Campbell. Here’s how their young team performed during the three first World cup events of the season.

Young veterans leading the way
Even though they missed the Almaty leg of the World cup this fall, team's veterans Wu Dajing and Fan Kexin continue to lead the Chinese team in the rankings. Wu Dajing won the three 500m finals he competed in and leads the World cup classification on the distance even though he missed one of the four 500m competed so far this season. Fan Kexin currently sits in fourth place in the 500m ranking and in 10th place in the 1000m ranking even though she only raced the distance once. She collected two individual bronze medals and one silver medal during the first two World cups and we can expect big things from her for the second half of the season. Fan and Wu also helped the Chinese mixed relay team take the lead in the ranking with two events to go.

Younger skaters making their way to the top
Skaters such as twenty-one-year-old Ren Ziwei, two-time medalist on 1000m, seventeen-year old Li Jinyu and eighteen-year-old Li Xuan who both medaled on 1500m and currently in the top 10 of this distance, will probably reach their peak in four years just in time for the Beijing olympics. Other young skaters such as Zang Yize, Wang Pengyu and Jia Haidong have also shown good things on the World cup circuit.

The men’s 5000m relay team won a silver and a bronze medal and is in third place of the World cup classification. The ladies had a harder time in the 3000m relay and are currently in 6th place.
