Short track: Another championship is cancelled because of Covid-19

Following the cancellation of the ISU European short track speed skating championships, the ISU sadly announced the cancellation of another competition.

The International Skating Union (ISU) announced yesterday that the ISU Four continents short track speed skating championships that was going to be held in Salt Lake City, USA from January 14 through 16 won’t take place. Here’s the statement from the ISU. 

Following the emergence of the new Covid-19 variant Omicron, the ISU was recently informed that several ISU Members will not attend the ISU Four Continents Short Track Speed Skating Championships, scheduled to take place from January 14 – 16, 2022 in Salt Lake City (USA), resulting in a very limited attendance.

Following these withdrawals and considering the complicated epidemic situation involving travel restrictions, quarantine requirements, safety concerns, logistical challenges as well as the planned limited attendance, this Event will not be dignified anymore to remain an ISU Championships.

Consequently, and for the above-mentioned reasons, the ISU Council decided to cancel the ISU Four Continents Short Track Speed Skating Championships 2022.

While the ISU regrets having to take this decision, it however would like to thank US Speedskating for their efforts and cooperation.

Athletes now have to focus on the Olympics and the World championships that are both, for the moment at least, still a go.

Courte piste: Un autre championnat est annulé à cause de la Covid-19

Après l'annulation des Championnats d'Europe de patinage de vitesse sur courte piste, l'ISU a malheureusement annoncé l'annulation d'une autre compétition.

L'Union internationale de patinage (ISU) a annoncé hier que les Championnats de patinage de vitesse sur courte piste des quatre continents de l'ISU, qui devaient avoir lieu à Salt Lake City, aux États-Unis, du 14 au 16 janvier, n'auront pas lieu. Voici la déclaration de l'ISU. 

Suite à l'apparition de la nouvelle variante Omicron de la Covid-19, l'ISU a récemment été informée que plusieurs de ses membres ne participeront pas aux Championnats de patinage de vitesse sur courte piste des quatre continents de l'ISU, qui devaient avoir lieu du 14 au 16 janvier 2022 à Salt Lake City (USA), ce qui se traduit par une participation très limitée des pays membre de l'ISU.

Suite à ces retraits et compte tenu de la situation épidémique compliquée impliquant des restrictions de voyage, des exigences de quarantaine, des préoccupations de sécurité, des défis logistiques ainsi que la participation limitée prévue, cet événement ne rencontrerait plus les standards des championnats de l'ISU.

Par conséquent, et pour les raisons susmentionnées, le Conseil de l'ISU a décidé d'annuler les Championnats des quatre continents de patinage de vitesse sur courte piste de l'ISU 2022.

Bien que l'ISU regrette d'avoir à prendre cette décision, elle tient cependant à remercier US Speedskating pour ses efforts et sa coopération.

Les athlètes doivent maintenant se concentrer sur les Jeux olympiques et les Championnats du monde qui sont tous deux, pour le moment du moins, toujours au calendrier.

The 2020 short track world championship is now officially cancelled

The 2020 World Short Track Championships are now officially cancelled. While the possibility of a postponement  had not been ruled out yet, the ISU decided to officially cancel it today. Therefore, there will be no World Champions in short track in 2020.

Here's the ISU official statement: 

Mindful of the escalating negative COVID-19 developments, the resulting world-wide human tragedy and the measures taken by the public authorities as well as logistical challenges the ISU Council during its on-line meeting held on April 16, 2020 concluded that a postponement of the pending 2020 ISU Championships is not possible. Consequently, the ISU Council has decided that the following ISU Championships must be definitely cancelled:

- ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships, Seoul, March 13-15, 2020

- ISU World Figure Skating Championships, Montreal, March 16-22, 2020

- ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships, Lake Placid, April 3-5, 2020.

In regard to the planning of the 2020/21 skating season and considering the uncertain development of the COVID-19 crisis and its impact on the staging of international sports events, the ISU Council will hold another on-line meeting on April 28 when different scenarios of the COVID-19 developments and impact on the ISU Event calendar will be discussed. The objective is to work out and communicate to all stakeholders options suitable for different scenarios in order to limit the uncertainty to the strict minimum.

Le Championnat du monde courte piste 2020 est officiellement annulé

Les championnats du monde courte piste 2020, qui devaient se tenir à Séoul, sont maintenant officiellement annulés. Alors qu'un report de ce championnat n'avait pas été écarté pour le moment, la ISU a pris la décision aujourd'hui de se concentrer sur la saison 2020-2021. Il n'y aura donc pas de champions du monde courte piste en 2020.

Traduction libre du communiqué du 16 avril de la ISU:

Conscient de l'évolution rapide de la COVID-19, de la tragédie humaine mondiale qui en résulte et des mesures prises par les autorités publiques ainsi que des défis logistiques, le Conseil de l'ISU a conclu, lors de sa réunion en ligne du 16 avril 2020, qu'un report des championnats de l'ISU 2020 ne sera pas possible. En conséquence, le Conseil de l'ISU a décidé que les championnats de l'ISU suivants doivent être définitivement annulés :

Championnats du monde de patinage de vitesse courte piste de l'ISU, Séoul, 13-15 mars 2020

Championnats du monde de patinage artistique de l'ISU, Montréal, du 16 au 22 mars 2020

Championnats du monde de patinage synchronisé de l'ISU, Lake Placid, 3-5 avril 2020.

En ce qui concerne la planification de la saison de patinage 2020/21 et compte tenu de l'évolution incertaine de la crise COVID-19 et de son impact sur l'organisation des événements sportifs internationaux, le Conseil de l'ISU tiendra une autre réunion en ligne le 28 avril, au cours de laquelle différents scénarios de l'évolution de la COVID-19 et de son impact sur le calendrier des événements de l'ISU seront examinés. L'objectif est d'élaborer et de communiquer à toutes les parties prenantes des options adaptées aux différents scénarios afin de limiter l'incertitude au strict minimum.

Breaking News: World championships in short track could be held this fall

The International Skating Union (ISU) just released a statement concerning the cancellation of the 2020 World championships in Korea. Instead of fully cancelling the event, the ISU is still looking into having it before the end of 2020. Here is the complete statement from the ISU. (Photo by Oscar van den Bosch)

On February 26, 2020 the ISU announced that the ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships 2020 cannot be staged as originally foreseen on March 13-15, 2020 since, in light of the situation in South Korea, the competent authorities of the city of Seoul have closed the Mokdong Ice Rink and ordered the cancellation of all planned competitions.

In the meantime, the ISU evaluated the situation and concluded that considering the current uncertain developments surrounding the Coronavirus, a rescheduling and/or relocation of the above-mentioned Championships within the current season, even if the season would be extended by several weeks after its normal end in early April, cannot be reasonably considered. During the coming weeks, the ISU will evaluate in cooperation with all stakeholders whether the ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships 2020 could possibly be held later in the year, but in any case not before mid-October 2020. The ISU will keep its Members informed on the ongoing evaluation and will announce a decision as soon as possible.

All other ISU Events for the season 2019/20 remain scheduled as planned. In this regard, the ISU is closely following the evolution of the Coronavirus and will follow the recommendations provided by the World Health Organization and the competent local authorities.

In particular, the ISU has updated the prevention measures it has implemented since February 4, 2020.

The ISU continues to work with local Medical personnel for each ISU Event who are in contact with their respective Public Health officials in the countries hosting ISU Events.

Because of the evolution of the Coronavirus outside of China the updated protocol for attending ISU Events is outlined below. The ISU educational sheet on coronavirus has also been updated and is available on the ISU website and the “ISU Events App” (available at ISU Events only).

Please be aware that anyone with ANY symptoms of acute illness shall NOT be traveling to ISU Events.

Anyone seeking accreditation for ISU Events will be required to complete the ISU questionnaire, which includes a temperature check. Any one with an acute illness or temperature will not be granted an accreditation. Instead they will be provided with a mask, isolated and will follow the protocol of the host country for testing and quarantine.

The ISU implemented precautions at ISU Events since February 4, 2020 and the precautions have been updated as of February 29, 2020 and are aimed at all accredited persons for the prevention of contracting the Coronavirus:

1. Questionnaire and health checks to be completed at arrival at the ISU Event
2. Health checks periodically throughout the ISU Event
3. Availability of tests for coronavirus on anyone with a temperature
4. Availability of masks for anyone who has cold-like symptoms or requests one. Please note that masks are not recommended for anyone who is healthy. Masks are recommended for anyone with symptoms.
5. Isolation room(s) to be available if necessary
6. Availability of hand sanitizer throughout the venue and the hotel
7. Gloves to be available if requested
8. Reinforce education regarding frequent hand washing, use of hand gel and cough etiquette.
9. Reduce handshaking and close physical contact
10. Educational sheet (see attached) is included in information on the ISU Events App.

Further, the ISU is in close contact with the Organizing Committees who will implement any necessary measures for the general public.

Montréal et Salt Lake City hôtes des Championnats des quatre continents 2020

L'Union Internationale de Patinage a confirmé les lieux où se dérouleront les premiers Championnats des quatre continents de 2020 en patinage de vitesse courte piste et longue piste.

Comme nous vous le partagions il y a quelques mois lors de la présentation des nouveaux règlements en courte piste, un nouveau championnat sera ajouté au calendrier de l'ISU dès la saison prochaine. En fait deux nouveaux championnats puisque le patinage de vitesse longue piste aura également le sien. Les patineurs éligibles à participer aux Championnats des quatre continents sont ceux issus des pays ne participant pas aux Championnats d'Europe. Un tel championnat fait déjà partie du calendrier de l'ISU en patinage artistique.

Le premier Championnat des quatre continents de l'ISU en patinage de vitesse courte piste aura lieu au Canada du 10 au 12 janvier 2020 à l'aréna Maurice-Richard de Montréal.  

Le premier Championnat des quatre continents de l'ISU en patinage de vitesse longue piste aura lieu aux États-Unis du 31 janvier au 2 février 2020 à l'Oval Olympique de Salt Lake City en Utah.

Montréal and Salt Lake City to host the 2020 Four Continents championships

The International Skating Union confirmed the first two cities who were given the task of organizing the first editions of the Four continents championships in short track and long track speed skating in 2020.

Like we told you a couple of months ago in our article about new rules in short track, a new championship will join the ISU calendar next season: the Four continents championships. The eligible skaters will be coming from countries not participating in the European championships. This type of championship already exists in figure skating and now enters both the short and long track competition calendar.

The first ISU Four Continents Short Track Speed Skating Championships will take place on January 10 - 12, 2020 at the Maurice-Richard arena in Montreal, Canada.

The first ISU Four Continents Speed Skating Championships will take place on January 31 - February 2, 2020 at th Utah Olympic Oval in Salt Lake City, USA.

Long Track: new rules for the new season

The ISU technical committee and its officials met over the summer to discuss changes to existing long track rules as well as to introduce some new ones. Here is a quick review of some of the new rules/changes coming into effect this season and beyond.

Future Championships

*Beginning in 2020/2021 there will be only one World Championship which will include the sprint combination, all-round combination and single distances. The distances skated in each will remain the same as the current format. The ISU has not offered any more details with regards to the format of the competition, and such details will be approved and announced by the ISU council at a later date. The rationale for the changes provided by the ISU, highlighted the following points:

-       More value to the World Champion Title

-       More focus from partners/fans

-       More travel money contributions to ISU members

-       Savings for teams in the ISU

-       Higher prize money

*The new Four Continents Championships will be introduced during the 2019/2020 season, this will be an annual competition and will follow the same format as the European Championships – but will not include skaters from European nations. The maximum number of entries per country for this event will be the same as the number of entries for the World Championships.

*The World Junior Championships and European Championships remain unchanged except the addition of a table that helps clarify the number of entries per country for each distance at the Junior World Championships.

Changes to the Mass Start

The majority of major changes were related to the mass start, with the ISU introducing a new point system as well as clarification to some existing rules.

*There were changes to the point system for the mass start at both the junior and senior levels. At the senior level, the points for the intermediate sprints will now be 3-2-1, and the final sprint will now see points awarded to the top-6 skaters (60-40-20-10-6-3). At the junior level, there will now be two intermediate sprints, in laps 4 and 7, and the points awarded will be 3-2-1. The points awarded for the final sprint will now be as follows: 30-20-10-4-2-1.

*Skaters who do not finish the race will be ranked according to the number of laps they competed – under the old rule this was not mandatory. Skaters who quit during the same lap are ranked according to last intermediate time.

*The ISU made some changes to rule 253 – where the words “serious obstruction” were replaced with “unsportsmanlike behaviour”. This now allows referee’s to DQ a skater for this type of infraction. Additionally, the obstructed skater may be advanced at the sole discretion of the referee. The ISU also added rule 262 (allowance of a fresh start) to the list of rules that do not apply to mass start races.

*The number of skaters competing in the Mass Start at the Junior World Championships has been increased from 28 to 30 skaters.

Other Changes to make note of

*The ISU changed the word “collision” to “obstruction” in rule 257, which means that there no longer needs to be an actual collision for a DQ. Therefore, anything that a skater does to impede another skater from completing a smooth lane change can now be considered an “obstruction” and may result in a DQ.

*All skaters participating in the team pursuit and team sprint will now be required to wear coloured armbands as follow (as per rule 279):

-       #1 skater – white armband with №1

-       #2 skater – red armband with №2

-       #3 skater – yellow armband with №3

-       #4 skater – blue armband with №4

Longue piste: de nouveaux règlements pour la nouvelle saison

Le Comité technique de l’Union Internationale de patinage (ISU) et ses officiels se sont réunis durant l’été pour discuter des modifications à apporter aux règlements et discuter de l’ajout de nouvelles règles à mettre en vigueur en vue de la nouvelle saison et des suivantes.

Nouveau format pour les Championnats du monde

*À partir de la saison 2020/2021, il n'y aura qu'un seul championnat du monde regroupant tous les championnats qui sont coursés sous le calendrier actuel.  Les dirigeants de l’ISU n'ont pas donné plus de détails sur le format de la compétition. Les détails seront approuvés et annoncés par l'Union internationale plus tard. Les raisons de ces changements sont les suivants:

- Donner plus de valeur au titre de « champion du monde »

- L’ISU donnera plus d’argent aux équipes pour le voyage au Championnat du monde

- Des bourses plus élevées pour les champions

- Des économies pour les équipes

*Les nouveaux Championnats des Quatre Continents seront introduits lors de la saison 2019/2020. Ce sera une compétition annuelle qui suivra le même format que les Championnats européens - mais les patineurs européens seront exclus de cette compétition. Le nombre de compétiteurs par pays pour cette compétition sera le même qu’aux Championnats du monde.

*Les Championnats du Monde Juniors et les Championnats Européens restent inchangés, à l'exception de l'ajout d'un tableau qui permet de préciser le nombre d'entrées par pays pour chaque distance aux Championnats du Monde Junior.

Changements au départ groupé

*Le système de points pour le départ groupé a été modifié chez les juniors et chez les séniors. Au niveau sénior, les points pour les sprints intermédiaires seront 3-2-1 et le sprint final verra des points attribués aux 6 premiers patineurs (60-40-20-10-6-3). Au niveau junior, il y aura maintenant deux sprints intermédiaires, dans le quatrième tour et le septième – les points attribués seront 3-2-1. Les points attribués pour le sprint final seront maintenant 30-20-10-4-2-1.

*Les patineurs qui ne terminent pas la course seront classés par le nombre de tours qu'ils auront complété. Selon l'ancienne règle, cela n'était pas obligatoire. Les patineurs qui abandonnent la course lors du même tour seront classés par leur dernier temps intermédiaire.

*Il y a des changements au règlement 253. Les mots “obstruction sérieuse” ont été remplacés par “comportement antisportif”. Avec ce changement, les officiels auront un éventail de motifs plus large pour disqualifier (DQ) des patineurs fautifs. De plus, un patineur lésé peut être avancé en ronde suivante à la discrétion de l'officiel.

*Le nombre de patineurs qui peuvent participer au départ groupé aux Championnats du monde juniors a été changé de 28 à 30 patineurs.

Quelques autres changements

* Tous les patineurs qui participent à la poursuite par équipe et au sprint par équipe devront porter un brassard coloré :

-       Patineur #1 : brassard blanc avec №1

-       Patineur #2 : brassard rouge avec №2

-       Patineur #3 : brassard jaune avec №3

-       Patineur #4 : brassard bleu avec №4



*Le terme "collision” a été changé pour “obstruction” dans la règle 257. Il ne sera plus nécessaire qu'une collision ait lieu entre deux patineurs pour avoir une disqualification.
