Hugo Gerard et Valérie Maltais vainqueurs du Marathon roller du Canada

Le Français Hugo Gerard et la Canadienne Valérie Maltais ont remporté les grands honneurs de la première édition du Canada Roller Marathon tenue samedi à Blainville.

Un peu plus de cent patineurs prenaient part à cette première édition du Canada Roller Marathon organisée par VRL le club.

Belchos tente sa chance, Gerard a le dernier mot 

La course masculine a débuté en trombe avec une échappée du Canadien Jordan Belchos dans le premier kilomètre. Après plusieurs tours à l’avant, Belchos a réintégré le groupe de poursuite composé du Colombien Nicolas Laborde Sanchez, du Canadien Julien Armand et des Français Pascal Briand, Hugo Gerard et Darren de Souza. Plusieurs des protagonistes ont tenté d’imposer leur rythme sans jamais arriver à distancer le groupe jusqu'à ce que Hugo Gerard lance une attaque à six kilomètres de l’arrivée qui a fait éclater le peloton. Avec moins de deux kilomètres à faire, seulement Belchos était encore accroché à Gerard. Le jeune Français s’est finalement départi du Canadien dans la dernière ligne droite remportant par le fait même le Marathon Roller du Canada 2019. Belchos a pris le deuxième rang, Armand le troisième, Laborde le quatrième et Briand le cinquième. Darren de Souza n’a pas complété l'épreuve, ennuyé par des crampes en fin de course. 

Maltais championne féminine

L’olympienne en patinage de vitesse sur glace Valérie Maltais a remporté les grands honneurs chez les femmes. Bien que le tableau féminin fut moins relevé que celui des hommes, sa plus proche rivale Anaïs Laurent a bien bataillée et a fait partie du même groupe que Maltais avec des patineurs masculins pour la majorité de la course. Frédérique Savard a pris le troisième rang.

Les autres épreuves

Une épreuve de 100m et un 3km étaient aussi au programme de la journée. Du coté masculin, Darren de Souza a remporté les deux distances alors que chez les femmes Anaïs Laurent a remporté le 100m et Valérie Maltais le 3km. Plusieurs jeunes patineurs compétitifs et des patineurs récréatifs prenaient également part à un 21km et à un 10km et quelques équipes ont fait le marathon à relais.

French skater Hugo Gerard and Canada's Valerie Maltais won the first edition of the Canada Roller Marathon held this Saturday in Blainville.

Over a hundred skaters took part in the first edition of the Canada Roller Marathon organized by VRL skating club.

Belchos tried, but Gerard had the last word

The men’s race started intensively with an attack from Jordan Belchos in the first kilometer. After many 3km laps at the front, Belchos reintegrated the chase group composed of Colombian Nicolas Laborde Sanchez, Canadian Julien Armand and French skaters Pascal Briand, Hugo Gerard and Darren de Souza. Some skaters tried to set a faster pace to escape the pack but none managed to do it until Hugo Gerard attacked with six kilometers to go. The leading pack then started to disintegrate and only Belchos was still with Gerard with two kilometers to go. Gerard dropped the Canadian in the last straight line winning the first ever Canada Roller Marathon. Belchos finished second, Armand third, Laborde Sanchez fourth and Briand fifth. Darren de Souza didn’t complete the race, bothered by cramps in the last kilometers of the race. 

Maltais is the women's champion

Short track speed skating olympian Valérie Maltais won the ladies’ race. Even if the women’s group wasn’t as strong as the men's one, Maltais's closest rival Anaïs Laurent skated a portion of the race with her in a group of men's skaters and didn't finish that far behind the winner. Frédérique Savard took the bronze medal.

Other distances

A 100m and a 3k were also raced in the morning at the PMG Technologies circuit in Blainville. Darren de Souza won both races in the men’s category while Anaïs Laurent won the ladies’ 100m and Valérie Maltais the 3k. Many recreational skaters and younger athletes took part in a 10k or a 21k and some also did the 42km in team relay.

Hausse marquée des inscriptions aux Championnats canadiens de roller

Il est encore trop tôt pour savoir si l’engouement pour le roller au Canada est en véritable éclosion ou si l’intérêt pour le sport est dans la partie haute d’une vague qu’il a déjà connue par le passé, mais les passionnés du patinage de vitesse à roues alignées ont de quoi se réjouir cette saison.

La piste asphaltée du Centre de la nature à Laval recevait les Championnats canadiens de roller 2019 les 10 et 11 août dernier. Si la journée de samedi a été un peu chamboulée par la température changeante, la journée ensoleillée du dimanche a offert aux athlètes une ambiance parfaite pour rouler le couteau entre les dents dans l’espoir de s’approprier l’un des titres nationaux à l’enjeu ce weekend. Parmi les athlètes victorieux, c’est sans surprise que des patineurs comme Julien Armand et Jérôme Comtois-Urbain ont été couronnés champions mais au delà des gagnants il y a l’affluence. Après des années plus difficiles en 2017 et 2018, une soixantaine d’athlètes ont pris part à ces championnats 2019. Des patineurs de tous âges en provenance du Québec, de l’Ontario et de la Nouvelle-Écosse ont croisé le fer ce weekend. Pour Pierre Laurent et l’équipe passionnée du club VRL de Laval, l’événement fut un franc succès. À un mois de la tenue de la première édition du Marathon Roller du Canada, ce weekend couronné de succès est une belle tape dans le dos pour ceux qui travaillent en ce moment sur la préparation du marathon.

De belles annonces pour le Marathon Roller du Canada

En plus d'annoncer Valérie Maltais en tant qu'ambassadrice de l'événement il y a quelques semaines et de confirmer la présence de Pascal Briand, Darren de Souza, Anaïs Laurent et Pierre Laurent, nous savons maintenant que d’autres patineurs avec de l’expérience internationale seront de la partie. Nicolas Laborde Sanchez (excellent patineur sur roulettes et représentant de la Colombie en Coupe du monde courte piste sur glace), Hugo Gerard (top 10 à la World inline cup de Dijon et top 20 lors du marathon des plus récents Championnats du monde) ainsi que Jordan Belchos (vice-champion du monde 2015 à la poursuite par équipe en longue piste et médaillé de bronze sur 10 000m en roller lors des Jeux Panaméricains de 2015) seront également de la partie. Suite à l’annonce de sa participation, Belchos a d’ailleurs lancé l’invitation, via Instagram, à d’autres athlètes et amateurs de roller de venir prendre part au Marathon Roller du Canada.

Significant increase in registrations at Canadian Roller Championships

It’s too early to know if the interest for roller in Canada is clearly on the rise or if it’s presently at the top of wave like it happened in the past, but Canadian athletes and aficionados have many reasons to smile this summer.

It’s at the aspalted track of the Centre de la Nature in Laval, Quebec that were held the 2019 Canadian inline championships on the weekend of August 10. If the capricious weather made things a bit more complicated on Saturday, Sunday’s weather was flawless offering a perfect opportunity for skaters to try and collect one of the national titles available during the competition. It was not a surprise to see skaters such as Julien Armand and Jérôme Comtois-Urbain fight each other to climb on the highest step of the podium, but it may not have been the highlight of the weekend. After down years in 2017 and 2018, about sixty athletes registered for the Canadian championships in 2019. Skaters from different age groups and coming from Quebec, Ontario and Nova-Scotia battled it out during the competition. Words at the event were that the sport is also presently developing in Alberta and British-Columbia. With the first edition of the Canada Roller Marathon coming up in less than a month and the success of this year’s national championships, it would be hard for Pierre Laurent and the entire team of the VRL Club not to be happy about this 2019 season.

Great  news for the Canada Roller Marathon

After presenting Valérie Maltais as their ambassador a few weeks back and confirming the presence of Pascal Briand, Darren De Souza, Anaïs Laurent and Pierre Laurent, the organizing committee had other names to announce in the last few days. Nicolas Laborde Sanchez who represents Colombia on ice in short track on the World cup circuit will be there. Hugo Gerard who finished in the top 10 of the marathon at the World inline cup in Dijon this year and 20th at the World championships will also compete. Last but not least, silver medallist on ice at the 2015 World championships in long track and bronze medallist on wheels at the 2015 Panam games, Jordan Belchos will also fight for gold in September. Belchos used his Instagram account yesterday to invite athletes to register for the first edition of the Canada Roller Marathon.

Le Marathon Roller du Canada a maintenant sa marraine d'honneur

En plus de s’allier à la Fondation de l'Institut de Cardiologie de Montréal et de faire équipe avec un autre marathon majeur se tenant aux États-Unis, le Marathon Roller du Canada a maintenant sa marraine d'honneur.

C’est avec beaucoup de fierté que Pierre Laurent, responsable du Marathon Roller du Canada, nous annonçait que la patineuse canadienne Valérie Maltais avait accepté d’être la marraine de cette première édition de l’événement. Bien connue pour sa carrière en courte piste, l’olympienne de 28 ans est passée au patinage de vitesse longue piste la saison dernière obtenant de bons résultats à sa première saison. Elle vise maintenant de participer aux Jeux olympiques de 2022 dans sa nouvelle discipline. Maltais a également représenté le Canada en patinage de vitesse à roues alignées au Jeux Panaméricains en 2015 ce qui fait d’elle une alliée de choix pour la présentation de ce nouvel événement de roller qui aura lieu en septembre. 

Les organisateurs ont également décidé de faire équipe avec le marathon le plus important aux États-Unis soit le Northshore Inline Marathon and Skate Fest qui en sera à sa 24e édition cette année et qui se tient à Duluth au Minnesota. Les deux organisations espèrent développer un partenariat qui incitera les athlètes à participer aux deux événements. De grand noms du roller comme Chad Hedrick, Ken Kuwada et la jeune star américaine Corinne Stoddard ont remporté l’épreuve dans le passé. 

De plus, la Marathon Roller du Canada a fait le choix de s’allier à la Fondation de l’Institut de Cardiologie de Montréal. Une association naturelle considérant que l’activité physique et les saines habitudes de vie sont intimement liés à la santé cardiovasculaire.

Canada Roller Marathon found its honorary spokesperson

After announcing that they would partnered with the Montreal Heart Institute Foundation and also that they were teaming up with the largest inline speed skating marathon in the USA, the Canada Roller Marathon found its honorary spokesperson.

It’s with a lot of pride that Pierre Laurent, race director of the Canada Roller Marathon, announced that Canadian skater Valérie Maltais has accepted to be the honorary spokesperson of the first edition of the event. Well known for her great career in short track speed  skating, the 28-year-old olympian made the switch to long track speed skating last season and offered promising results. Her goal now is to qualify for the 2022 Olympic games. Maltais also represented Canada in inline speed skating at the 2015 Pan American Games presented in Toronto which make her the perfect fit to be the face of this first edition of the Canada Roller Marathon this September. 

The organizers also reached out to Mike Ward, race director of the Northshore Inline Marathon and Skate Fest in Duluth (Minnesota), to link the two events and develop a partnership that would encourage athletes to take part in both races. Some big names of the sport such as Chad Hedrick, Ken Kuwada and young American star Corinne Stoddard have won the Northshore Inline Marathon in the past. 

Finaly, the Canada Roller Marathon has decided to team up with the Montreal Heart Institute Foundation. A natural partnership considering that physical activity and a healthy lifestyle are key in maintaining cardiovascular health.

The stage is set for the World Allround Championships in Calgary

Forty-eight of the world’s best skaters will be converging in Calgary at the Olympic Oval this weekend for the Allround Championships.

This event will surely be exciting as new faces, along with past Olympic and World Champions alike take to the ice Saturday.

Canada’s skaters feeling good heading into this weekend

Valerie Maltais, who made the switch to long-track this past summer, has been focusing on small goals throughout the season and is excited heading into her first Allround championships “I’m really excited for the weekend and I’m excited to race at home… It’s hard to have expectations for the weekend as I’m so new in the sport, but I’m feeling good.” Her transition from short to long track has been challenging and while some may think she makes it look easy she argues that it was a lot of hard work “I was talking to the girls this morning and saying how ‘maybe I make it look easy’ but you girls were there every day, and it wasn’t easy… Once you put on those clap skates it’s so different and it was hard to build the speed, and the pressure. It took a good couple months to not almost trip every time I was doing an acceleration.” Maltais is eager to continue her journey on the 400m track and we are excited to see her progress in the coming seasons.

Isabelle Weidemann, who has had an incredibly successful season so far, will be making her allround debut this weekend. Going into this season she had a goal to step onto the podium for the first time, something she has done on numerous occasions this season “it’s been so awesome to step on the podium multiple times this year, and I’m just really proud to represent Canada.” The Ottawa native feeling good as the first day of competition approaches “this is my first world Allround so I’m excited to do some sprints and just experience everything.”

Having skated a PB at time trials this past weekend, Antoine Gelinas-Beaulieu is feeling good into this weekend and is excited to race in front of a home crowd “everybody is cheering for you and expecting something out of you. I think it’ll be just positive energy for my race.” After finishing 18th last year in Amsterdam, he is looking for strong performances in the 500m and 1500m to put him into a good position to make the cut on the final day “my big strengths are in the 500 and 1500, so I’ll focus mainly on that and try to have the best 5k possible, so I can be in that top-6 to race the 10k.”

Canada’s skaters are ready to rumble this weekend in Calgary in front of a home crowd and look to continue building on previous successes this season.

La table est mise à Calgary pour les Championnats du monde toutes distances 2019

Quarante-huit patineurs convergeront vers L’Anneau Olympique de Calgary pour les Championnats du monde toutes distances cette fin de semaine.

Le weekend promet d’être excitant pour les fans de patinage de vitesse alors que de nouveaux visages et des champions olympiques et mondiaux s’élanceront sur la glace de Calgary.

Les patineurs Canadiens en pleine forme

Valérie Maltais, qui a fait la transition de la courte piste vers la longue piste l'été dernier, s’est concentrée sur de petits objectifs tout au long de la saison et est fébrile à l’idée de participer à ses premiers championnats toutes distances. «Je suis vraiment excitée pour cette fin de semaine et j’ai bien hâte de patiner à la maison. C’est difficile d’avoir des attentes puisque je suis nouvelle dans le sport, mais je me sens bien.» Même si ses résultats pourraient donner l’impression à certain que la transition a été simple, la principale intéressée note que ce ne fût pas le cas: «Je parlais avec les filles ce matin et je leur disais que j’avais peut être fait paraître ça facile, mais qu'elles avaient été témoins de tout le travail que ça m’avait demandé. Dès que tu mets les patins à ‘claps’ c’est tellement différent du courte piste et c’est difficile de produire de la vitesse et d’avoir une bonne poussée. Ça m’a pris quelques mois pour ne pas perdre l’équilibre à chaque fois que je faisais une accélération.»

Isabelle Weidemann, qui a eu une saison incroyable jusqu'à présent, en sera également à une première participation à ces championnats. Son objectif en début de saison était d’obtenir son premier podium sur le circuit. Finalement, elle y est montée à plus d'une reprise. «Ça a tellement été génial de monter sur le podium plusieurs fois cette année et je suis très fière de représenter le Canada.» Weidemann se sent bien à l’aube de cet important weekend. «Ce sont mes premiers Championnats du monde toutes distances alors je suis excitée à l’idée de participer à des épreuves de type sprint et de vivre cette expérience.”

Après avoir patiné un record personnel la fin de semaine dernière, Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu semble être en pleine forme et il a bien hâte de participer à une compétition aussi importante devant les amateurs canadiens. «Tout le monde t'encourage! Les gens s’attendent à ce que tu performes bien. Ce sera beaucoup d’énergie positive pendant que je serai sur la glace.» Après avoir terminé au 18ème rang l'année dernière à Amsterdam, il vise avoir de bonnes courses sur 500m et 1500m afin de se mettre en bonne position pour se qualifier pour l’épreuve de 10000m «Mes plus grandes forces sont le 500m et 1500m, alors je me concentrerai surtout sur ça. Je vais essayer d’avoir le meilleur 5000m possible pour faire un top 6 et patiner le 10000m.»
