Best senior performances at the European inline championships

The best inline speed skaters in Europe battled it out at the 2019 European championships last week in Pamplona, Spain.

Here are some performances that captured our attention in the senior category during this week of racing. 

Italia, Italia, Italia

As expected, team Italy was strong during these championships gathering eight European titles in the senior category. Speed skating's queen Francesca Lollobrigida won two titles (track points race, road points race) while Giuseppe Bramante also got two in the men’s category winning the 1000m and the track elimination race. Daniel Niero, Duccio Marsili, Linda Rossi and the men’s relay team also all got an European title. Adding to the titles, many silver and bronze medals were awarded to Italian skaters. 

Strong week from Spanish skaters

Another country that stood out of the crowd was team Spain. Led by Ioseba Fernandez who won the 200m TT, the 100m and the one lap sprint and long distance skater Patxi Peula who took the road points race title, Spain showed their home crowd what they’re made of. The power duo of Fernandez and Peula also defended its European title in the 500m team sprint. In the ladies’ category, Maialen Onate won the title in the marathon event. We also saw great things from other Spanish skaters, notably from Jonathan Galar in the sprint distances. 

Great moments for Belgium 

Even though Bart Swings was absent, team Belgium still won a good share of titles and medals. Sandrine Tas got five individual titles and participated in Belgium’s victory in the ladies’ relay and 500m team sprint. Stien Vanhoutte participated in the team events victory and won the 100m title while her teammate Anke Vos also got some medals.

Pedronno and Ferrié, victorious for France

The championships started with young French skater Mathilde Pedronno’s victory in the 200m TT with a fast time of 18.468. At last year’s European championships, Martin Ferrié had won the elimination race but got disqualified at the end and lost the title. This year was the one for him as he skated to victory in the same exact distance with the help of teammates Doucelin Pedicone and Quentin Giraudeau. Other french skaters stepped on podiums like Valentin Thiebault, Darren de Souza and Juliette Pouydebat.

Other countries’ mentions

German Felix Rijhnen only skated the road races and won the final sprint of the marathon to get the last title up for grab in these championships. Honourable mention to Portuguese skater Diogo Marreiros who didn’t manage to get a title but accumulated a lot of silver and bronze medal during the week.

Les meilleures performances seniors des Championnats d'Europe de roller 2019

Les meilleurs patineurs de vitesse sur roues d’Europe ont croisé le fer lors des Championnats d’Europe de roller 2019, tenus la semaine dernière en Espagne.

Voici certaines des performances ayant retenues notre attention dans la catégorie senior durant ces championnats. 

Italie, Italie, Italie

Comme plusieurs s’y attendait, l’équipe italienne a été solide durant ces championnats ramenant huit titres de champions d’Europe dans la catégorie senior. La reine du patinage Francesca Lollobrigida a remporté deux titres (course à points piste, course à points route) alors que Giuseppe Bramante a également pris deux titres chez les hommes avec ses grandes victoires sur 1000m et à la course à élimination sur piste. Daniel Niero, Duccio Marsili, Linda Rossi et l’équipe masculine de relais ont également raflé un titre. S’ajoutent à tous ces titres plusieurs médailles d’argent et de bronze par l’équipe italienne.

Belle semaine pour les patineurs espagnols

Un autre pays qui s’est démarqué durant la semaine est l’Espagne. Mené par Ioseba Fernandez, qui a remporté le 200m contre-la-montre, le 100m et le sprint d’un tour et par Patxi Peula qui a pris le titre de la course à points sur route, l’équipe espagnole a montré à la foule locale de quoi elle était capable. Le puissant duo de Fernandez et Peula a également défendu son titre au sprint par équipe de 500m. Chez les femmes, Maialen Onate s’est imposée de belle façon au marathon en prenant le titre. Nous avons également vu de belles choses d’autres patineurs espagnols, notamment du sprinteur Jonathan Galar.

De bons moments pour les Belges

Malgré l’absence de Bart Swings, les Belges sont tout de même montés sur plusieurs podiums durant la semaine. Sandrine Tas a pris cinq titres individuels en plus de participer aux victoires des Belges au sprint par équipe et au relais féminin. Stien Vanhoutte a pris part aux épreuves par équipe et a été sacrée championne d’Europe du 100m. Leur coéquipière Anke Vos a également eu de bons championnats en amassant quelques médailles.

Pedronno et Ferrié, victorieux pour la France

Les championnats ont débuté avec la victoire de la jeune française Mathilde Pedronno au 200m contre-la-montre. Un autre beau moment pour les Bleus fut la victoire de Martin Ferrié à la course à élimination sur route. Sur la même distance l’année dernière, Ferrié avait franchi la ligne en premier avant d’apprendre qu’il était disqualifié et qu’il perdait son titre. Cette année a été la bonne alors que ses coéquipiers Doucelin Pedicone et Quentin Giraudeau l’ont mené vers une grande victoire à Pampelune. D’autres Français ont eu des médailles durant cette compétition dont Valentin Thiebault, Darren de Souza et Juliette Pouydebat. 

Mentions d’autres pays

L’Allemand Felix Rijhnen ne prenait part qu’aux courses sur route, mais s’est assuré de laisser sa marque sur ces championnats. Il est reparti avec le titre du marathon en remportant le sprint final de façon explosive. Le Portugais Diogo Marreiros mérite une mention spéciale. Il n’a remporté aucun titre mais est monté sur plusieurs podiums et faisait toujours partie de la bataille.

A look back at the 6 Giorni Rotellistica 2019

The best skaters in Italy and some international guests battled it out at the 6 Giorni Rotellistica 2019 held in Santa Maria Nuova, Italy from the 6th to the 11th of August.

The 6 Giorni Rotellistica is a six day inline speed skating event that has been held in Italy for many years. For 2019, the first two days of racing also counted for the European cup classification. Many non-Italian skaters took part in these two first days of racing before heading out to the European cup final: the Flanders Grand Prix in Belgium.  

Lollobrigida et Peula European cup winners

Italian star, skating under Bont Skates colours, Francesca Lollobrigida won the ladies’ European cup in Santa Maria Nuova. Fellow Italian Luisa Woolaway finished second while Colombian Aura Quintana took third. Honourable mention to French skater Mathilde Pedronno for her win on 500m. Patxi Peula from Spain won the men’s Europa cup with an overall great weekend winning the 1000m and the elimination race and finishing third on 500m and in the points race. French skater Elton de Souza finished second overall winning the 500m and placing well on other distances while Italian Daniele di Stefano took the third step of the podium.

Retour sur le 6 Giorni Rotellistica 2019

Les meilleurs patineurs d’Italie et quelques patineurs internationaux ont croisé le fer lors du 6 Giorni Rotellistica tenu à Santa Maria Nuova en Italie du six au onze août.

Le 6 Giorni Rotellistica est une compétition de roller durant six jours tenue en Italie depuis plusieurs années. Pour l’édition 2019, les deux premiers jours comptaient pour le classement de la Coupe d’Europe. Plusieurs patineurs internationaux ont fait le déplacement pour amasser des points lors des ces deux journées avant de se rendre en Belgique pour la grande finale de la Coupe d’Europe, le grand prix des Flandres. 

Lollobrigida et Peula remportent la Coupe d’Europe

La vedette italienne représentant Bont Skates Francesca Lollobrigida a remporté la portion Coupe d’Europe de la compétition en remportant notamment le 1000m de brillante façon. L’Italienne Luisa Woolaway a pris le second rang alors que la Colombienne Aura Quintana a terminé au troisième rang. Mention spéciale à la Française Mathilde Pedronno qui s’est imposée en remportant le 500m. L’Espagnol Patxi Peula a remporté la Coupe d’Europe masculine en gagnant le 1000m et la course à élimination en plus de prendre la troisième position au 500m et à la course à points. Le Français Elton de Souza a pris le deuxième rang cumulatif en remportant le 500m alors que l’Italien Daniele di Stefano a pris le troisième rang

Victoires surprises de Greig et Chen sur route aux World Roller Games

La portion route des World Roller Games a pris fin dimanche avec le marathon à Barcelone.

Si la Colombie a dominé les courses sur piste des World Roller Games en remportant neuf des douze titres seniors disponibles, le reste du monde a eu un peu plus de succès sur la route limitant les Colombiens à quatre titres sur dix chez les seniors. 

Victoires inattendues sur la route

Les championnats sur route ont été ponctués de performances inspirées de patineurs que nous n’attendions pas nécessairement. L’une de ces performances fut celle de Chen Yan-Cheng de Taïwan lors de la course à points. Le patineur de 24 ans a mené une longue échappée à deux avec le Français Timothy Loubineaud. Les principaux prétendants à la victoire sont revenus trop tard sur les deux fugitifs laissant le titre de champion à Chen et celui de vice-champion à Loubineaud. Plusieurs étaient excités à l’idée de voir une confrontation entre  Edwin Estrada et Ioseba Fernandez pour la victoire sur 100m, mais aucun des deux n’est parvenu à atteindre la grande finale. L’Australien Daniel Greig, qui avait éliminé Fernandez le champion du monde en titre en demi-final, s’est imposé en grande finale s’emparant du titre sur la distance.

Swings, Lollobrigida et Beddiaf mènent l’Europe

Le Belge Bart Swings, déjà deux fois champion sur piste en 2019, a ajouté un autre titre à sa collection avec sa victoire à la course à élimination sur route. Francesca Lollobrigida a quant à elle remporté deux titres sur route en s’imposant à la course à élimination ainsi qu’au marathon. Le Français Nolan Beddiaf a remporté son deuxième titre de champion du monde du marathon en carrière en étant le plus rapide au sprint de peloton à Barcelone. Parmi les autres Européens qui ont eu du succès sur route, Simon Albrecht, Felix Rijhnen, Gwendal le Pivert et Sandrine Tas sont tous parvenus à monter sur la deuxième ou troisième marche d’un podium. 

Les Colombiens restent forts

L’équipe colombienne a continué d’amasser des titres et des podiums sur la route alors qu’Edwin Estrada et Jhoanna Viveros ont tous deux pris leur troisième titre de champion du monde de 2019 en remportant respectivement le sprint d’un tour et le course à élimination sur route. Geiny Pajaro a remporté son second titre du championnat avec sa belle victoire sur 100m alors que sa coéquipière Andrea Canon a dominé la finale du sprint d’un tour.

Sabien Tinson vole la vedette chez les juniors

L’américain Sabien Tinson a été le seul junior à gagner deux titres de champion du monde sur route alors qu’il a remporté le sprint d’un tour et le 100m. Les Colombiens Maria Quiroz Alfonso, Juan Mantilla Pinilla et Sheila Munoz, Ies Italiennes Asja Varani er Giorgia Valanzano et le Belge Jason Suttels ont été les autres champions couronnés chez les juniors.

Surprising victories by Greig and Chen on the road at the World Roller Games

The road races portion of the World Roller Games came to end with the marathon on Sunday in Barcelona.

If Colombia dominated the track portion of the World Roller Games winning nine out of the twelve senior titles up for grab, the rest of the world had more success on the road with six of the ten available titles. 

Unexpected wins on the road

The road championships were punctuated by surprising yet well deserved victories. One of them came from Chinese Taipei’s Chen Yan-Cheng in the points race. The twenty-four-year-old skater was in a long breakaway with twenty-two-year-old Timothy Loubineaud from France. The principal contenders for the win on the distance came back on them a bit too late. Chen Yan-Cheng won the race followed by Loubineaud. Bart Swings took third. Many were hyped by a potential Edwin Estrada versus Ioseba Fernandez confrontation for the win on 100m, but none of them reached the four skater final. Australian Daniel Greig, who eliminated reigning world champion Fernandez in the semifinal won the big final and the world title on the distance.

Lollobrigida, Swings and Beddiaf led Europe

Francesca Lollobrigida took her first win of the championships in the elimination race and closed the games with another win in the marathon. Belgian Bart Swings, who had already won two world titles on the track, added the road elimination race champion title to his collection. Nolan Beddiaf won his second marathon world champion title in career being the fastest in the bunch sprint at the end of the 42k. Among European skaters, Simon Albrecht, Felix Rijhnen, Gwendal le Pivert and Sandrine Tas all managed to step on the second or third step of a podium on the road. 

Colombian were still strong

The Colombian team continued to collect titles and podiums on the road as Edwin Estrada and Jhoanna Viveros both claimed their third title of the championships respectively on the one lap sprint and the points race. Geiny Pajaro got her second world champion title of these World Roller Games with a strong performance on 100m while Andrea Canon completely dominated the one lap final to get herself a title and make Colombia’s national anthem play once again. 

Sabien Tinson steals the show in the juniors

American Sabien Tinson was the only junior skater to win two world champion titles on the road as he won the one lap sprint and the 100m. Colombian Maria Quiroz Alfonso, Juan Mantilla Pinilla and Sheila Munoz, Italian Asja Varani and Giorgia Valanzano and Belgian Jason Suttels were the other world junior champions.
