Tough Day 2 for Team France in Budapest

Text: Carl Savard

A second day with a bit less tribulations in Budapest as the skaters were battling to join the top part of the rankings for this weekend’s action on 1000m and the relay event. While the 1500m and 500m races yesterday looked liked a roller-coaster, as a whole today was more like a merry-go-round. Here are some details on today’s competition and the upcoming waves for this weekend main event on 1000m and the relay.

Tough day for Team France Other than Tifany Huot-Marchand from France having a mishap and not being able to continue to the next round, the preliminary round went pretty smoothly for all the top skaters. Overall, France had a pretty tough day tough as Véronique Pierron was penalised in the second round and Thibaut Fauconnet wasn’t able to qualify for this weekend’s top group. Fauconnet had amazing results on 1000m last year, but he had a pretty tight group of skaters fighting in his heat today. Liu Shaoang from Hungary and Ryosuke Sakazume from Japan advance to the quarter-finals while world champion Seo Yi Ra from Korea couldn't do better than the Frenchman in this heat and won't battle with the bests on 1000m this weekend. The only bright moment for team France today was the women’s relay team qualifying for the semi-finals.

Canadian results Five of the six canadian skaters competing on 1000m today were able to qualify for the quarter-finals that will be held on Sunday. Kasandra Bradette missed her qualification finishing third behind Italy’s Arianna Fontana and Great-Brittain’s Charlotte Gilmartin. It is with no surprise that both canadian relay team qualified for the big show this weekend.

Here are the semi-finals heat on the relay for tomorrow and the quarter-finals ones for the 1000m on Sunday.

Some surprises on day one in Budapest

Text: Carl Savard
Photo: Tony Chung (@SHORTTRACKHD)

Action started this morning in Budapest as short track speed skaters from all around the world reunited to start their new season. For some of them, this season will culminate with a participation in the Olympic games in Pyeongchang this coming winter. Here is a fast review of today's action as skaters were in the qualifying phase of the competition to get their spot to battle in the upper part of the standings on 1500m and 500m.

Surprises
Netherland's rising star Suzanne Schulting was penalised on both distances today and men's legend Victor An didn’t pass the heat stage on 1500m. On 500m, Germany's Anna Seidel fell in the preliminaries while Kasandra Bradette from Canada did the same in the heat stage. Russia's Semen Elistratov will not be in the quarter-finals on 500m as he finished fourth in a “heat of death” behind Budapest's own Liu Shaolin Sándor, Canada's Samuel Girard and american star J.R.Celski. Another crazy heat on 500m was the one composed of Liu Shaoang, Charle Cournoyer, Abzal Azhgaliyev, Keita Watanabe and World champion Seo Yi Ra. Shaoang fell while Cournoyer and Seo Yi Ra were beaten by Azhgaliyev and Watanabe. Not necessarily what most fan would have bet on.

The athletes will be back in action tomorrow for the first part of the competition on 1000m and the team relay event.
