La retraite est maintenant officielle pour Marianne St-Gelais

Bien que ce ne soit pas une surprise puisque ses intentions étaient connues depuis plusieurs mois, la Canadienne Marianne St-Gelais a officiellement annoncé sa retraite hier.

Même si sa dernière saison fut plus difficile, nous nous devons de souligner ses performances de la dernière décennie et son apport énorme au sport. Un palmarès à l’image d’une grande athlète.


*A participé à sa 1ere coupe du monde en 2006-2007

*A remporté sa 1ere médaille en coupe du monde en 2009

*Selon le site web de Patinage de vitesse Canada, St-Gelais a remporté 93 médailles en coupe du monde dont 23 médailles d’or.

*Elle a remporté 15 médailles en championnats du monde dont l’or sur 1500m en 2016 et un titre de vice-championne du monde au cumulatif en 2017.

*Elle a participé aux Jeux olympiques à trois reprises remportant trois médailles en carrière dont deux lors des Jeux de Vancouver en 2010.

Retirement is now official for Marianne St-Gelais

Even though it has been known for months that Marianne St-Gelais was going to end her career after the 2017-2018 season, she officially announced her retirement yesterday.

Her career may have not ended the way she would’ve liked, but her performances of the last decade should totally make you forget the difficulties of her last season. An impressive collection of medals for an amazing athlete.

*She skated on the world cup circuit for the first time in 2006-07

*She won her first world cup medal in 2009

*Based on Speed skating Canada's website, St-Gelais won 93 world cup medals including 23 gold medals.

*She won 15 medals at world championships including a gold on 1500m in 2016 and she is the 2017 overall world vice champion.

She is a three time olympian and won three olympic medals. Two of those were won during the Vancouver Olympic games in 2010.

Fontana crowned champion, van Kerkhof and Boutin caused a surprise

Arianna Fontana took the gold medal on 500m at the Gangneung ice palace on the second day of short track at the Olympics.

In the second day of short track in Pyeongchang, the ladies raced in the 500m quarters, semis and finals while the men skated in the 1000m and relay qualifications.

Major surprise in the 500m quarters

The competition started with Marianne St-Gelais’s disqualification on the first turn of the first heat. She fighted hard with Yara van Kerkhof after the start and caused a fall. The referees stopped the race and disqualified Marianne. Marianne will have three other chances to race for a medal in the 1000m, 1500m, and ladies’ relay. ‘’I’ve never seen a call like that in my life. It’s incredible.‘’ said Marianne after the race.

Semi-finals ladies’ 500m

Choi Minjeong established a new Olympic record of 42.422 in the first semi-final. Arianna Fontana, Yara van Kerkhof, Elise Christie and Kim boutin, who was advanced, were going to join Choi in the A final.

Fontana on top

In a hard fought A final, Arianna Fontana won her 6th Olympic medal. After Choi Minjeong’s disqualification and Elise Christie’s fall, Yara van Kerkhof got silver and Kim Boutin got the bronze medal.

Qualifications men 1000m

The 1000m qualifications were packed of action. Liu Shaoang, Han Tianyu and Vladislav Bykanov were disqualified in their respective heats. Canadian olympic medalist Charle Cournoyer did not advance for the quarter finals. After he broke one of his blades, J.R. Celski skated on one spare blades and didn’t manage to qualify. On a more positive note, Charles Hamelin established a new olympic record on 1000m.

Relay semi-finals

China and Canada finished first and second in the first heat. Sjinkie Knegt was penalized on Samuel Girard in the last turn of the relay and the Netherlands did not qualify for the final. In the second heat, Korea skated a new olympic record. The Hungarian team finished in second and will join them in the A final.

Fontana championne, van Kerkhof et Boutin surprennent

Au deuxième jour de compétition en  courte piste aux JO de Pyeongchang, les dames ont patiné les quarts, les demi-finales et les finales sur 500m alors que du côté des hommes c’était les qualifications du relais et du 1000m.

Surprise générale en quart de finale sur 500m

La compétition a débuté avec la disqualification de Marianne St-Gelais au premier virage de la première vague de qualification. St-Gelais a pris sa place au premier virage en poussant la Néerlandaise Yara van Kerkhof et s’en était trop pour les arbitres qui ont arrêté la course et disqualifié la Canadienne. Marianne aura encore la chance de patiner pour une médaille à trois reprises, soit sur 1000m, 1500m et au relais. ‘’Je n’ai jamais vu une décision comme ça. C’est incroyable.’’ a déclaré Marianne après sa course.

Demi-finales 500m dames

Choi Minjeong, a établi le nouveau record olympique sur la distance avec un temps de 42.422 et allait être la favorite en grande finale. Arianna Fontana, Yara van Kerkhof, Elise Christie et Kim boutin, qui a été avancé, rejoindront la Coréenne dans une grande finale à cinq patineuses.

Fontana l’emporte en grande finale

La grande finale a été durement disputée et c’est l’Italienne Arianna Fontana qui l’a emporté. À la suite d’une disqualification à Choi Minjeong et de la chute d’Elise Christie, Yara van Kerkhof a gagné l’argent et Kim Boutin le bronze.

Qualifications masculine sur 1000m

Il y a eu beaucoup d’action en première ronde sur 1000m chez les hommes. Liu Shaoang, Han Tianyu et Vladislav Bykanov ont été pénalisés dans leurs vagues respectives. Le Canadien Charle Cournoyer n’est pas parvenu à passer sa vague et ne sera pas des rondes suivantes. Après un bris de lame, l’Américain J.R. Celski a du patiner avec une lame de rechange et ne passera pas en prochaine ronde. Sur une note plus positive, Charles Hamelin a établi un nouveau record olympique de 1:23.407.

Demi-finales du relais masculin

La Chine et le Canada ont terminé au premier et deuxième rang de la première vague et seront de la grande finale. Sjinkie Knegt a été pénalisé sur Samuel Girard au dernier virage et a causé l’élimination des Pays-Bas. La Corée a battu le record olympique en remportant la deuxième vague. Les Hongrois qui ont terminés deuxième seront également de la grande finale.

Patinage de vitesse Canada a dévoilé aujourd'hui quels membres de l'équipe olympique courte piste s'élanceront sur chacune des distances Individuelles lors des Jeux de Pyeongchang.

Who will skate what? Canada unveil its plan

Speed skating Canada unveiled which skaters will race in the individual distances at the Olympics in short track.

Even if the team was confirmed a while ago, the role of each skaters was kept secret until today. Here are the different distances and the skaters who will compete in them:

La saison de courte piste se poursuit en Asie

Les meilleurs patineurs seront à Shanghai et Seoul dans les prochaines semaines pour la troisième et la quatrième manche de la Coupe du monde de la saison. Ils y batailleront de précieuses positions en vue de se qualifier pour les Olympiques.

Plusieurs patineurs ont impressionnés lors des deux premières manches de la Coupe du monde à Budapest et à Dordrecht et peuvent presque sentir l’air de Pyeongchang tandis que d’autres auront fort à faire lors des deux prochaines semaines pour concrétiser leur rêve olympique. Vu les enjeux, les courses des deux prochains weekends seront plus tendues ce qui devrait nous offrir un excellent spectacle. Les courses se dérouleront du 9 au 12 novembre à Shanghai et du 16 au 19 à Séoul. Les journées de jeudi et vendredi seront des journées de qualification en vue des finales de la fin de semaine.

Short Track season continues in Asia

The best short track skaters are in Shanghai for the third World cup event of the season and they will fight again for precious positions to qualify for the Olympics. World cup season will end the following week in Seoul, Korea.

Some skaters had amazing results in the first two legs but others will need to step up their game for the next two weeks to qualify for Pyeongchang. We can predict that this weekend's races will be a little more stressful and it will surely result in a great show. Shanghai World cup will be from the 9th to the 12th and hostilities will start back next weekend in Seoul from the 16th through the 19th of November. The qualifying rounds will be on Thursdays and Fridays and the finals will be Saturdays and Sundays.

Highly exciting Day 3 in Budapest!

The top skaters had a rendez-vous with the firsts finals of the new season today in Hungary and both the women’s and men’s side of the competition was packed with action.

From the get go, Valérie Maltais and Kim Boutin from Canada were very solid in the first semi-final finishing first and second. Korean skaters Shim Suk Hee and Choi Min Jeong offered the same type of performances in their heat joining the canadian skaters in the A final. Great-Brittain's pride Elise Christie and Australia's Deanna Lockett would complete the top six. In the A final Choi Min Jeong finishes first in front of Boutin and Lockett. Maltais who was skating an amazing race saw her chances vanished when she was pushed by Shim Suk Hee. The Korean was penalised on the move. In the B final, Kim A Lang from Korea finished first, Canada's Jamie McDonald second and Hungary's Petra Jaszapati third.

A lot of action in one of the men's semi-finals on 1500m as the heat was composed of current olympic champion on the distance Charles Hamelin, overall 2017 world champion Seo Yi Ra, world record holder on the distance Sjinkie Knegt and hometown hero Liu Shaolin Sándor. At the end, Liu and Knegt got their ticket for the A final finishing first and second, Canada’s Hamelin and Cournoyer were both penalised in this race and Korea’s Seo Yi Ra and China’s Shi Jingnan were advanced to the big final. That A final was eventually won by Lim Hyo Jun with Hwang Dae Heon finishing second and Sjinkie Knegt of the Netherlands finishing third. Samuel Girard won the B final with Chinese Han Tianyu finishing second and Sébastien Lepape from France finishing third

On the women’s side of the 500m competition, Choi Min Jeong finishes on top while Italian superstar Arianna Fontana finishes second. Shim Suk Hee completes the podium winning the bronze. Marianne St-Gelais who finished second overall on the distance in last year's World championship gets fourth place. On the men’s side, the always spectacular Liu Shaolin Sándor gets the gold medal while Lim Hyo Jun and Hwang Dae Heon gets silver and bronze in front of Chinese rocket Wu Dajing. Canada's Samuel Girard wins his second B final of the day beating Dylan Hoogerwerf from the Netherlands and Abzal Azhgaliyev from Kazakhstan.

Canada, China, Korea and Russia will meet in the women's relay A final tomorrow, leaving the strong team from Netherlands out of the top final following a third penalty to Suzanne Schulting in this competition. On the men’s side, it took the referees long minutes to take a decision following a hard collision between Canada’s Charles Hamelin and Hungary’s Liu Shaoang. Hamelin who had just passed the relay to his teammate, took one step inside while at the same moment Shaoang who had just received his relay took a step outside trying to use his normal turning line. They crashed into each other causing a fall to the Hungarian skater. Referees saw it as a race incident not worthy of a penalty to the great disapointtment of the Hungarian crowd present at the Bok Hall in Budapest. Canada will fight Japan, Korea and China in the A final tomorrow while Hungary will be in the B final with Russia, Kazakhstan and the United States.

Maltais, Hamelin, St-Gelais et Dion viennent compléter l'équipe canadienne de courte piste.

C’est sans réelle surprise que le Canada a annoncé aujourd'hui les quatre athlètes qui viendront compléter l’équipe de courte piste qui livrera bataille au reste du monde sur le circuit de la Coupe du monde cet automne et qui représentera le Canada aux prochains Jeux olympiques d’hiver à Pyeongchang  en Corée du sud. 

Samuel Girard, Charles Hamelin, Charle Cournoyer, Kim Boutin, Jamie Macdonald et Kasandra Bradette ayant déjà obtenu leur billet pour le grand show lors des Sélections de l’équipe courte piste 2018 tenues à l’aréna Maurice-Richard il y a deux semaines,  le comité de sélection devait se pencher sur les demandes de laissez-passer déposées par Marianne St-Gelais, Valérie Maltais et François Hamelin qui n’avaient pas pu prendre part à la compétition ou avait dû déclarer forfait avant la fin de la compétition pour cause de blessure. 

Après étude des dossiers déposés, l’appel des trois athlètes d’expérience a été entendu et le comité de sélection a annoncé aujourd'hui lors d’une conférence de presse tenue au sommet de la tour du Stade olympique de Montréal, qu'ils feront officiellement parti de l’équipe de compétition pour 2017-1018.

Pascal Dion qui a terminé quatrième au classement des Sélections complètera l’équipe chez les hommes. 

Les dates à retenir

Les quatre manches de la Coupe du monde 2017 se tiendront du 28 septembre au 1er octobre à Budapest en Hongrie, du 5 au 8 octobre à Dordrecht aux Pays-Bas, du 9 au 12 novembre à Shanghai en Chine et du 16 au 19 novembre à Séoul en Corée du Sud.

Les Jeux olympiques auront lieu du 9 au 25 février 2018 à Pyeongchang en Corée du sud alors que les Championnats du monde se tiendront à Montréal du 16 au 18 mars 2018.

Maltais, Hamelin, St-Gelais and Dion officially added to the short track team.

It is with no surprise that Speed skating Canada announced today which four athletes will complete the 2017-2018 canadian team that will compete on the short track speed skating World cup circuit this fall and represent Canada at next winter’s Olympic games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

After Samuel Girard, Charles Hamelin and Charle Cournoyer on the men’s side and Kim Boutin, Jamie Macdonald and Kasandra Bradette on the women’s side all obtained their tickets for the big show by finishing in the top three at the competition held at the Maurice-Richard arena in Montreal two weeks ago, the selection committee still had work to do. They had to study Marianne St-Gelais, Valérie Maltais and François Hamelin’s request to be part of the team even though they couldn’t take part in the competition (St-Gelais) or could not complete it due to injuries (Maltais and F.Hamelin). The selection committee announced today in a press conference held at the Olympic stadium in Montreal that after discussion, the three veterans’ requests were officially granted.

Pascal Dion who finished fourth at the end of the selection process will also be part of the men’s team.

Important dates

The four legs of the World cup circuit will be held from September 28 to October 1st in Budapest, Hungary, from October 5 to 8 in Dordrecht, Netherlands, from November 9 to 12 in Shangaï, China and from November 16 to 19 in Seoul, South Korea.

The Olympic games will take place in Pyeongchang, South Korea from the 9th of February to the 25th and the World championships will be held at the Maurice-Richard arena in Montreal, Qc on March 16, 17 and 18.
