According to the Russian News Agency TASS, 33-year-old Viktor Ahn is currently preparing his skating comeback with the goal of participating in the 2022 Beijing Olympic games. The most decorated male short track speed skater in Olympic history, tied with USA's Apolo Ohno, didn't compete last season and the Russian federation had announced his retirement last September. According to the Russian Skating Union, Ahn is registered to skate the RSU international open cup in September. Two weeks later, he's supposed to take part in the first qualifying tournament used to select the skaters who will be part of the national team this upcoming season.

During his career, Ahn collected eight Olympic medals including six gold medals. He also won twenty gold medals at the World championships out of thirty-four medals total. He is the only male athlete to have been crowned overall world champion in short track speed skating six times.
