Lim Hyo Jun took the first short track speed skating gold medal of the Pyeongchang olympic games at the Gangneung ice palace.

In the first day of short track in Pyeongchang, the ladies raced in the 500m and 3000m qualification and the men skated the entire 1500m event.

In the first day of short track in Pyeongchang, the ladies raced in the 500m and 3000m qualification and the men skated the entire 1500m event.
Lots of action on 1500m
Most of the favorites were able to qualify for the semifinals in the men’s 1500m. Charles Hamelin was dominant in his heat and moved in the pack at the right moment to avoid a three men fall.
Elistratov was solid in the first 1500m semi. Charles Hamelin finished two thousandth of a second in front of Seo Yi Ra to qualify for the final. Samuel Girard who was advanced also qualified. Sjinkie Knegt took control of the pack in the second semifinal and was followed by Thibaut Fauconnet. Liu Shaolin was advanced in the A final. The third semi final was the heat of death with three Chinese, two Koreans and Hungary’s Liu Shaoang. Lim Hyo Jun and Hwang Dae Heon finally managed to qualify after thirteen and half intense laps. Itzhak de Laat from the Netherlands was also advanced. The table is set for a nine men A final.

The nine skaters A final was fighted hard from the start to the end. Lim Hyo Jun established a new olympic record with his strong victory in the 1500m. Sjinkie Knegt from the Netherlands and Semen Elistratov from OAR completed the podium. They were followed by Girard, Shaolin Sandor, de Laat, Fauconnet, Dae Heon and Hamelin who was penalized. It’s a big victory at home for Hyo Jun!

Korea and Canada finished first and second in Heat #1 and will advance in the A final. Korea offered a great show to their home crowd as they broke the Olympic record after a fall at the beginning of the race. This new Olympic record ended being beaten by China in the other semi-final. China and Italy will join Korea and Canada in the A final.
