The ice marathon season started with the KPN cup #1 yesterday in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The men’s race was 125 laps long while the ladies skated through 80 laps to decide who would take the first win of the marathon season. A lot of well-known names where on the line like Ingmar Berga, Crispijn Ariens, Bob de Vries, Peter Michael and Jorrit Bergsma in the men’s race and Irene Schouten, Manon Kamminga and Iris van der Stelt in the women's competition. Hard fought battles were to be expected in Amsterdam for this long race.
Sjoerd den Hertog wins the first men’s battle
The Dutch skater from Groningen, who represents Okay Fashion & Jeans / Interfarms, Sjoerd den Hertog won the 125 laps race. The pack splitted in two groups early in the race but a select group of 9 skaters managed to escape and race to the line. New Zealand inline and ice speed skating star Peter Michael was the first to launch the sprint but wasn’t able to keep the pace to win. Sjoerd den Hertog crossed the line just before Arjan Stroetinga from Royal A-Ware and Michael who will represent Brokers Flexibles this season.

Schouten solid in the sprint
Olympic medalist in the mass start and many times winner of KPN cup events Irene Schouten won the first leg of the KPN marathon cup in the women’s category. Some groups tried all race long to escape without success. Schouten offered a fast acceleration in the last lap to create a little gap with her rivals. She managed to cross the line in first ahead of Iris van der Stelt from mkbasics.nl and Bianca Bakker representing team ZiuZ. Schouten takes the lead of the marathon cup prior to next week’s event to be held Sunday the 27th.
