After a week of high temperatures and crushing humidity in the Montreal area, weather was back to its normal self Saturday morning for the Marathon de Laval. With a sunny sky, low humidity and a little breeze, the skaters and organizers couldn’t have hoped for better. Many distances were raced during the day to accommodate skaters of all ages and physical conditions, but the main attraction was the 42km marathon.
Two athletes accustomed to podiums in Laval, Maxime St-Jules who won both the full and half marathon last year and Julien Armand who finished third on the semi in 2017, were in Europe representing Canada at the World championships. Still, the Marathon was raced by some great athletes. Nicko Laborde Sanchez from Colombia, who won the first edition in 2015 and veteran Ontario skater Peter Doucet were there. Quebec’s endurance specialists Jérôme Comtois-Urbain and Bruno Pettersen-Coulombe, who respectively own the record for most laps in duo and most laps in solo at the 24H Roller Montreal, were also at the starting line. Add to that the presence of French skaters Pierre and Anaïs Laurent and German skater Victor Wilking who all have great international experience in their resume and it gives you an interesting starting lineup for this young event who’s part of the Pro Roller Tour World Marathon Ranking. At the end, Victor Wilking finished in front of Nicko Laborde Sanchez. Jérôme Comtois-Urbain finished third. On the women's side, Anaïs Laurent won the gold.
